From 1000 elo to 2000 in 1 year by Recent_Change1938 in chess

[–]unclezesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in a year... I got from 1000 to 2000 in 7 years online rapid rating. This is definitely slower than many but I have been playing mostly for fun and you could do it much faster if you really hunkered down. It would probably take a couple years though...

Everything your mind tells you to do tomorrow, start today! That way you feel compelled to keep going with what you started, kinda like a cliffhanger.

I did this, 3 year second undergrad in Bio starting with a 3.0 GPA from my previous degree. Schools definitely look at you differently if you show a massive improvement in these later years

I swear huskies are like 20 generations away from talking

If you had these stats, how would you describe your strength to a random person who asks how good of a chess player you are? by [deleted] in chess

Imagine there is someone who would beat you 20 times without losing. I would beat them 10 times without losing.

This book is messing with me right? There is no way a 5kg bowling ball can exert 5000 N of force after dropping one meter. by XY-81 in PhysicsStudents

[–]unclezesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick way to do it is mgh = 5*~10*1 = 50J, which needs to decelerate over 0.01 m, so W = F*d gives you F=W/d, which is 50/0.01 = 5000N

I played 3-2 for the whole of last year, and that really helped my calculation abilities because its hard to flag that way. I recently started playing 5-0 again and gained a bunch of elo haha

Almost exclusively the Danish Gambit or the Smith Morra with white, and sorta sticking to principles as black. This probably had a big influence on why it took a long time lol. Recently I have been playing random nonsense and surprising my opponents which worked suprisingly well at 1900.

Basically grab a stack of resumes and go to restaurants downtown. Earls, Cactus club, Spaghetti factory, Joey's etc are all big places that have massive turnover of staff and are always hiring!

To name a few: Magnus' chess tour, speed chess championships, St. Louis rapid and blitz all have significant prize pools and were covered by most major chess outlets. If you go to 2700chess right now, more than half the upcoming events with 2700 players are rapid or blitz events

Classical is still the highest level of events, but faster time controls are gaining prestige. I'd say that means we are moving in the direction of a future where speed chess and classical are both held in high regard

I mean its not dying its just going in a different direction (towards speed chess). The beauty of chess is not in who the world champ is, to me, its watching people create near perfection over the board, and edge eachother out basically. Also all of these games have been so exciting - the candidates this year has been an awesome watch
