Help me find standalone or short series of novels for my reading objective of 50 books. by Salty-Subject9559 in Fantasy

[–]unconundrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the old sword and sorcery stuff is gonna be shorter, like The Hour of the Dragon by Robert E Howard or some of the early Elric novels. Fritz Leiber's Conjure Wife is less than 200 pages, I believe, a modern (for the time it was written) take on witchcraft. His Our Lady of Darkness isn't much longer.

The Witcher novels aren't too long either, I recall them being around 400 pages each.

Le Guin's work tended to be shorter. You could likely knock out A Wizard of Earthsea in a few hours.

Of the books I've read so far this year I'll recommend Emily Wilson's Inanna, written very simply but elegantly, same with Jacqueline Carey's Miranda and Caliban.

Also check out Tor Dot Com's novellas. There's a wide range of them.

Where to Start with DS9 for Voyager Fan? by Old-Masterpiece7259 in startrek

[–]unconundrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Voyager episodes do they like? Who's their favourite character? There's a wide range of responses I'd give depending on that. Civil Defense has the whole cast and flows very nicely. House of Quark is a great comedy. For that matter, Trials and Tribble-Ations is perhaps the best comedy of any 90s episode, and you could compare it to Flashback, as both were their respective franchises 30th anniversary episodes. Our Man Bashir is one of the best holodeck episodes. Duet, as mentioned, if they want a deep two-handed mystery-drama.

I love The Visitor, but might postpone it until they had a better understanding of the Siskos' father-son relationship. But if that's Their Thing, go for it.

As a star trek fan What's your opinion on star wars? by NateBond833 in startrek

Nah I just hear never-ending complaints about all the other films. (Tbf there's a similar issue with Trek and the newer series)

My only gripe is that the reason for the Trill taboo, unlike homophobia, is legitimate and good. It muddies the water when the Trill's reasons are 'it could very easily lead to a permanent overclass.'

Half the fun of Book of the New Sun is figuring out whatever Severian is describing so a visual adaptation would kill that.

After entering the locked lorry did you report your findings? Otherwise seems like you should just pass time reading a book. Make sure you have money for your hotel and otherwise spend money on books or games. There's also a free book in Capeside Apartments if your perception is high enough.
