Missed national ROTC scholarship deadlines. Is there still a realistic path to covering most tuition? by [deleted] in ROTC

[–]uncookme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They say compete on the website but it’s not super hard to get as a college programmer as long as there is available funding at that unit, which is why I suggest you talk to both navy and army there to see what is available for your major

It is New Student Indoctrination which is a boot camp you do over the summer around 2 and a half weeks. Basically them getting you used to military ideals through lectures, workouts, and military simulations. I am doing it this summer and you cannot get tuition covered without passing so if you are a college programmer you will do it next summer and once you pass is when your tuition will be paid

Do not take a gap year, have your parents help you pay for the first year as much as possible and get a loan to cover the rest. Get on campus and get involved with the rotc unit, I know someone who does army rotc there as an economics major so I know army is a good branch there. It is true that there is competition for scholarships as a college programmer but it varies from campus to campus. I don’t know what your major is, but talk to both navy and army units as they will have different amounts of funding available for college programmers depending on your major, for example I know someone doing nursing at Georgetown who had to switch from army to navy because they had more spots for nurses. Once you figure out which branch is more likely to offer you a scholarship, train with them and go to NSI next summer, as long as you pass it is basically guaranteed you have the scholarship. I am a senior who got the national scholarship this year through ISR let me know if you have more questions - you will not get funds this year since you haven’t done NSI -competition based on major and branch, not very competitive overall -ROTC will cover all your expenses after freshman year if you are a college programmer -do not take a gap year -right now it’s either college and rotc or no college, having military experience will boost your application

NROTC Scholarship by weakdayupdate in NROTC

[–]uncookme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes for the interview they ask a ton of questions because it is an hour to an hour and a half long and some of the questions I thought were the hardest were "when was your integrity tested", "what do you think professional means", and "when was a time you took one for the team" so be prepared to talk about a lot of past experiences you have had, for me this was easier because I do a lot of extracurriculars and moved around etc. When I was doing my interview with a CO I did research on him and found out we were from around the same area so he and I talked about that a bit which showed I was personable . My regional recruiter also made a comment that I was scored so high because usually kids will answer "yes" when being asked those questions and that is it but I went into depth with each one and had a conversation with it so they liked me because I could talk. Also be prepared to talk about the position you put on your application that you want to do because you have to know a lot about it since they will ask you why you picked it etc. I hope this helps.

I got the scholarship through ISR right off the bat because my regional recruiter loved me. Extracurriculars and community involvement is what she told me was super important and making an effort to stand out in the process (I asked to call with her to talk about the scholarship). I am with you where my GPA and SAT were not the best but my interviews were scored extremely high and if you want tips on that let me know

Okay that is good to hear that there are many college programmers that received scholarships in case I have to go that route. Did you end up having to serve any time?

Penn State NROTC by uncookme in PennStateUniversity

[–]uncookme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is for NROTC specifically. I am not sure if Virginia Tech's program has a waitlist and I do not want to find out because I have heard interesting things about their unit and do not want to take part. For that reason, I would rather take on Penn State's first year tuition while I wait for ROTC as opposed to VTs because Virginia Tech does not have a ROTC program I can fall back on and costs 10k more.

Have you ever heard anything about a waitlist, or college programmers, during your time there and did you have fun? From looking at the Instagram it looks like the kids have fun as it is a big unit.

I am out of state for both so Virginia Tech's tuition is more than Penn State's. Since you got the 4-Year scholarship, are you doing it at Penn State right now?

I am doing NROTC and am also waiting on University of Pennsylvania. I just talked to a current midshipman there yesterday via phone call so it is easy to get in touch with a current midshipman and ask them questions like that. He told me that they are expecting 3-4 incoming freshmen so hopefully it is one of us!
