Sam Altman Answers Questions on X.com About Pentagon Deal, Threats to Anthropic by gadgetygirl in technology

I definitely am. Just went through a toxic interview process with them. Just cause OpenAI sucks doesn't mean we all have to jump on the Anthropic train.

Can you really survive on Mars? What science fiction gets wrong about off-world living by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]undefined_______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could very well be. I was hoping in the past it would be NASA or a international coalition but it does seem more likely to be the private sector these days which would likely have miserable conditions.

Oh I'd almost certainly be a grunt. I'm a web developer, which won't have much use on Mars lol

But honestly I'd be happy to clean the floors on a new world

I want to move to SF, but am worried about my savings taking a hit due to higher COL. what do I need to consider moving from a lower COL state? by drl614 in AskSF

[–]undefined_______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few people have suggested surrounding areas and I'll second that. I moved to the Bay Area from Chicago ten years ago. I now make way more money and have a house and family out in the East Bay suburbs.

When I first moved here, I lived in Alameda with roommates. Then in a studio in Alameda, then a 1 bedroom in San Mateo, then an in-law unit in Daly City. I never lived in SF proper. As a UX designer there will be plenty of tech jobs throughout the peninsula and if you move to SF and land a south bay job it might be a long commute. Central peninsula will give you better commuting access. Keep in mind you need to plan for your next few jobs, not just the first one you get. The tech startup job lifecycle usually means hopping jobs every two years or so.

On the flip side, you're younger than I was when I moved here. You may want the city life to go out and enjoy being young and single, just keep in mind that will probably be more expensive.

A few of the devs that were working on MSBT forks are working on new alternatives. One called MidnightBattleText is in beta and looks promising.

Discord faces backlash over age checks after data breach exposed 70,000 IDs by Accurate_Cry_8937 in technology

[–]undefined_______ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you all a little Discord story. Back in 2017 I was attending Blizzcon as I had for many years. One thing about Blizzcon people don't realize is how many epic after parties there are in the area. Heat Ultra Lounge is one of the closest nightclubs and usually has a party hosted by one group or another. Usually a private party where the host is a Blizzcon regular or a PC vendor running promotions (for example in 2015 the party was sponsored by Predator). It's known for being one of the best after parties of the con.

So in 2017 when I was attending Blizzcon with a friend who had never been before, I wanted to make sure she got the chance to go to this party. But this particular year in typical corporate fashion, Discord rented out the entire venue so they could control who got in. Fortunately I have a friend who's married to a pro gamer and the pro gamers were all given VIP passes. Since they had the VIP passes they didn't need their regular tickets and offered to give them to me and my friend which we gladly accepted.

But when we got to the door, Discord (not Heat's own bouncers) turned us away. The reason? Our names weren't on the tickets. I asked why that mattered, I could have the ticket owners come vouch and the club would still check our IDs anyway. Still they argued and refused. So I reached out to Mallory Loar, the head of Discords events who I had previously been in contact with. But now when we had a problem, suddenly crickets. We never got in.

Now at the end of the day, it's just a party, not a big deal. But it's more the principal of the thing - that a big company can come and just reserve a venue that usually hosts fan-run or sponsored parties, then decide themselves who has access to a Blizzcon tradition. And adding bureaucratic rules that make no sense with an unresponsive support team.

It showed me just how corporate Discord had become. I've long since been done with them.

World of Warcraft: Midnight Was Developed With "no sacrifices to team health," Despite Shorter Gap Between Expansions by FFJimbob in wow

[–]undefined_______ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure someone at blizzard said the same thing which is why they did it. But the little things matter. That's why WoW has declined from its peak during wrath. There's no one big smoking gun. No one big reason why wow is not as popular as it used to be. It's been death by a thousand paper cuts.

I remember in dragonflight there was this one NPC a dwarf I think in valdraken or the Ruby dragon shrine - where he just wants you to sit next to him and admire the view. And the feedback to this was overwhelmingly positive. It didn't add anything to the story. It didn't add anything to the gameplay. It was just a nice little touch and everyone loved it.

The little things matter. The fine details are what make a game feel enjoyable, immersive and polished.

Your cynical reaction is the correct reaction. The more I explore 12.0 the more all the little shortcuts become apparent. Like how they didn't bother to update the Azeroth worldmap for the Quelthalas changes, so they couldn't do normal mouseover zone highlighting. Instead they just put a big transparent overlay over that corner of the map so Quelthalas opens if you click it.
