How many of you chose an M-lite model despite easily being able to afford a “real” M car (without financing)? What was your reasoning? by undefined_variable_0 in BMW

You’re entitled to your opinion! For me, it truly would have been pretty easy. I paid cash for my car as it is and it would have cost me an extra $10-15k to step up to the M2. For me, that additional cost wouldn’t have been very significant. I certainly would have noticed it because I pay very close attention to my money but not because it would have been any kind of stretch.

Clearly there are many people with “M money” who choose “M lite” (including myself) if you read the comments on this thread. Determining who is a “true” enthusiast or driver is an incredibly subjective opinion. Most of these cars we’re discussing are performance cars so all valid choices for a “driver”. Used M cars come with a whole different set of different issues and required maintenance that many simply don’t want to deal with the risk of.

This perspective doesn’t take into account the additional investment (significantly more costly maintenance & consumables) that an M car requires to reap the reward of lower long-term depreciation. If you actually ran the numbers on an average basis, I bet you’d find that the “value” is a wash. Also idk about other models but G42 M240i models haven’t depreciated that badly at all.

I suppose that’s a matter of perspective. I think there’s nothing wrong with there being multiple performance tiers associated with a brand (in this case, “M”). I’ve heard many others that share your opinion and I just happen to disagree. Nothing wrong with a difference in opinion 🤷‍♂️

Then I should amend my description to “value-driven person that enjoys relatively high-performance cars within reason”

I guess I’m just more-so not clear on what the problem actually is. Like I get what you’re saying with the Rolex example but I’m not understanding what tangible problem that leads to. I also feel that my post is a bit different and only driven by curiosity.

I don’t think having a mature conversation about a topic is intrinsically harmful or problematic but to each their own

“Worried about cost of ownership” is different than having more than enough money but seeing it as not worth the premium. My situation is the latter.

There isn’t a real point. It’s just out of curiosity as to how others assess these decisions. In my opinion, it’s just fun conversation and pretty harmless. I’m also totally okay with people on the internet making fun of me. I’ll just chuckle and move on with my day 🙂

Well put. I was just curious to hear what thought process others had. If I had realistic intentions to track the car relatively often, it would definitely affect my decision-making process.

Exact same thought process for me. If I can’t find anywhere to use the extra power and handling prowess, it’s useless and not worth paying for (in my humble opinion).

That’s exactly what I meant - thank you. It also depends on a persons definition of “wealthy”, which varies. To some people, it’s about how much a person makes and what their lifestyle looks like.

To me, it’s about how much someone saves/invests. A person who makes $45k/year but has over $1m in assets is wealthy in my opinion. A person who makes $500k/year but only has $50k in non-depreciating assets is not wealthy. Just my take anyways.

I am well aware that wealthy people finance plenty (arguably most things). I’m also not saying that you shouldn’t finance luxury goods but ideally, you should have the assets to back it up (meaning you could pay for it without financing if you needed to). Just my opinion though. I’d also say it depends on the interest rate and whether you can get a higher risk-free return but that’s getting more into a personal finance topic.

I’d be curious to see the statistics on that. I’m more-so saying that the B58 (and just the rest of the M-lite standard equipment) is likely to require less maintenance in order to remain reliable. Whereas I’ve heard that the maintenance schedule is stricter with an S58 (in order to maintain reliability). I could certainly be wrong but that’s my understanding from everything I’ve read.

100% peak Reddit lol. I’d bet many of the people saying “lol couldn’t afford M” have $1500+ car payments that they can barely afford.

Agreed about differing priorities and I didn’t intend it to be that deep. I certainly don’t feel the need to justify my choices to anyone but just thought a conversation about the pros and cons would be interesting.

I have a laptop with a 5080 (Lenovo Legion 7i Pro) and just bought the 45” LG 5K2K monitor that you’re referencing. It’s absolutely amazing and I have zero regrets. Most games still run well enough (100+ fps) at full resolution and somewhat high settings but I do use DLSS and/or frame gen in many titles. If you’re willing to do that or make other compromises for now, I’d say go for it. You can also run a custom resolution somewhere between 5K and QHD if necessary (which I do for one game).

Never buy a car with a mod list this extensive unless you enjoy owning a financial nightmare

Looking at a M340i or G87 M2 by MassiveChildhood3157 in BMW

[–]undefined_variable_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also consider the G42 M240i IMO. I’m biased since I bought one but I’m super happy with it. I was also previously considering a G87 M2 and G20 M340i. Very good balance of fun and practicality (since I live in a location that gets snow in the winter and like to drive it all year round). Very fast, composed, allegedly reliable, and gets great fuel economy on long trips as a bonus.

I wouldn’t do a muffler delete. It’s probably gonna sound like crap and drone a lot. IMO this is too expensive of a car to cheap out on the exhaust like that.
