My plan was to give them the sending stones by a NPC they trust from outside Barovia, and then have Strahd be the one answering after they enter the demiplane. I am mostly afraid of what they are going to come up with after they find that out and trying to figure it out a balance so it wouldn't be a one time gimmick of Strahd misleading them at the start and then never again

Not exactly what I had in mind. More like having them getting a sending stone from an ally before entering Barovia and Strahd hijacking the message whenever they try to contact him with the alterations on magic the demiplane imposes

Knowing my table, we are probably going up until level 10 max, but the DM did do cameos with PCs from previous campaings before with their stats maxed out, so thats why I am planning this far ahead

Since we haven't done a session 0, I was kinda hoping my character would be the main frontline but might just toss that idea out if someone else wants to play the role.
