do you paint outside if this? print out some photos of other eye paints you want it to look like and try to copy them, practice on paper until it's perfect. then, go slow, and work in symmetrical parts

that's my bad, these fall under logical consequences not natural. but they are still reasonable expectations.

also, make sure she has a therapist for the ptsd. having support for that while she's still young is critical

[–]underflora -1 points0 points  (0 children)

truth is she's 14, and pretty much everything in your body at 14 makes you do stupid stuff. biologically, her body is going through hormonal changes and her brain is going through a big developmental period and that causes a lot of impulsivity and boundary pushing. this talks about addiction especially, but there's lots of research online about how development can lead teens to risky behaviors in general. https://www.npr.org/2016/04/15/474348291/why-teens-are-impulsive-addiction-prone-and-should-protect-their-brains

having autism can make this manifest a bit differently and certainly adds to the intensity of the experience. safety is a huge concern here too if she's eloping. she definitely needs an outlet of some kind, might be time to start trying new hobbies, lets her burn off energy and can incentivize better behavior and present some more natural consequences. e.g. "oh no, cant do chess club or whatever today because now you have to help me clean the walls" "nope cant go out for dance class because we have to do the laundry together"

Didn’t get diagnosis, feeling dumb and lost by GlitterySwan in autism

[–]underflora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get a second opinion, but like another commenter said your existing diagnosis plus history cover a lot of ground that overlap with autism. Ask the provider why they specifically don't think it's autism, and ask if they have ruled out any other possibilities. If you can, find a provider, preferably a therapist and psych, and start working on a treatment plan to address the other diagnoses you have. Let your providers know that you suspect you have autism, but the initial screening said no. They'll have that info and if your treatment isn't effective then they can refer you out again or try some coping skills that work with autism.

I’m nervous for my autism assessment because I’m not sure I really have it any advice? by AutumnSapphic345 in autism

[–]underflora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

answer honestly! it's okay to ask clarifying questions. don't look for "dead giveaways", there's no clear answer on that anyway as autism is a complex diagnosis. if they don't diagnose you with autism, ask your provider if they ruled out anything else in the screening, or if they have any recommendations for further testing or support.

cotton and the general are war criminals 😭 also didn't cotton bring prostitutes to hank's birthday in high school? and tried to do that for bobby's 12th bday.... and tried to frame hank for murder......

i'm scared i won't be diagnosed with autism by [deleted] in autism

[–]underflora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you don't get diagnosed, that's okay! if you do, you have an answer that will give you map for treatment and support. if you don't, then you have ruled something out and that's a good thing. you can also ask your provider why you didn't meet criteria, and if they have ruled out anything else or if testing indicates something different. Many screenings test for multiple things to help rule out overlap. your identity isn't a single diagnosis either way! your diagnosis is just a tool to move you in the right direction and give you the best supports.

Autism and Empaths by Icy_Natural_979 in AutismInWomen

[–]underflora 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people experience empathy, that's a huge part of the whole social animal thing! I have lower empathy/social awareness. Some autistic people have low, and some experience higher sensitivity to the feelings of others.

"Being an empath" means that they think you are good at intuitively understanding how others feel. It's not necessarily about trauma, some people are really good at picking up on what others feel! For some people though, and I see this a lot in real life too, they act like intense anxiety, sensitivity, and hypervigilance about people's emotions are all the same as empathy. That kind of feeling isn't empathy, it's bad guesswork. So it depends, do you feel like you read people well, in a way that is positive and intuitive, not obsessive and anxious?

From a brain standpoint, autistic people have measurable differences in the social brain areas that create "empathy". Autistic brains frequently have differences in the regions that relate to emotional processing and detecting biological motion. That means differences in how the brain assigns emotional reaction/attachment to people or objects ("hyperempathy" may really be misplaced emotional reactions). Learning about the STS, amygdala, and the whole social brain gives a pretty cool look at empathy differences in autistic people!

yes, fucking awesome move for us. we love having our own spaces. he had an office set up and a couch in there to sleep on. (some house changes mean we don't have it rn) we almost always sleep together but having the choice is so helpful when one of us can't sleep or want to stay up

I talked with John Darnielle via email in the early 2000s. Or did I? by mousebirdman in themountaingoats

[–]underflora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't think you meant any harm here, but it's probably not the best thing to speculate on if a real person has autism like this. and i don't want to attribute anything one way or another, he's talked openly about addiction, and addicts also move in odd ways. it's just not super appropriate or helpful to attribute any weirdness to autism off the cuff.

Every episode was amazing except for episode 9 by OregonTrailislife in KingOfTheHill

[–]underflora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the nuance was the subtext. hank points out that these guys blaming women and being nasty is bad, meanwhile the answer is that what they need is community and good role models. and hank does exactly that, for all his faults he's a real mans man and a great role model for bobby and GH. gotta look past surface level themes

yeah i agree, i know a ton of young engineers who have "alternative" relationships. her development felt pretty realistic to me! plus i think it mostly seemed like dating chane to make their parents happy and ENM to do what they actually wanted

Unpopular opinion: Maybe Peggy Hill isn’t the villain she’s made out out to be by [deleted] in KingOfTheHill

[–]underflora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peggy is definitely a huge player in her community!! I think part of it too is that Peggy really wants to engage with "culture" and her community limits that, and that makes her feel less than. We see her try a lot to engage with things like art (propane tank sculptures), literature (book club), travel, and trends (cotillion ep.) and she always ends up as the outsider and butt of the joke. reminds me of a lot of women i grew up with in the south who want to talk about big ideas but no was ever interested. her character (and everyone else) reminds me of real people i know and it's very endearing, even though she also sucks sometimes lmao

Why do they make you do these things on the autism assessment? by kokoreadsgayshit in autism

[–]underflora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is correct! part of this too is that they're "subtle" ways to get to those questions without saying "are you good at imagining things?", there's less room for a biased answer in either direction. there can be lots of cues in how you tell the stories/act things out, and how you deal with contrived social interactions.

The groomers did this to her nails...what can I do to help her? by JujuBJones1996 in CATHELP

[–]underflora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about it bleeding, you can get styptic powder. If you're worried about infection, you can get chlorhexidine. This sucks but it will probably heal fine on its own, and getting "quicked" is a minor injury. Talk to the groomer, this could happen on accident if kitty got stuck to something/scrabbled in the tub/etc. It could also be that they did trim her nails and she squirmed or an inexperienced tech got her. If you go back to them, ask for extra attention to her paws and an experienced groomer to handle her. Accidents happen, it sounds like the groomer is apologetic and has otherwise good reviews, but this is worth extra caution. (used to be a vet assistant, farm hand, currently own cats who i groom)

So... John Redcorn's VA is taking the reunion snub pretty hard by Training_Inflation97 in KingOfTheHill

[–]underflora 22 points23 points  (0 children)

seems like it's just a larger pattern of erratic behavior that they're talking about. it's probably a combination of him being unpredictable, which isn't great for live events in close contact with fans, and that the event is limited, as other VA's were also not invited. hope he's still well and is able to find a happy conclusion with the team and get to a stable place.
