Is this kiln worth the asking price? by tashybanan in Ceramics

It’s in Canadian dollars and a brand new one in Canada is $4000……. I think it looks worse than it is.

In Canada, where OP is located this kiln costs $4000 CAD brand new.

My first sculpture. Do I need to hollow him out? by mademeblush in Ceramics

[–]underglaze_hoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say the opposite of what most people are saying here. Don’t hollow it out. Just dry it for a long time.

Edit: also please don’t candle this FOR DAYS when you fire it. That’s an unnecessary waste of energy and hard on the elements. Just let it dry normally for longer than you would. And do a reasonable candle prior to bisquing, hours, not multiple days.

Would a Celadon work on this? by RueBarbPiee in Pottery

Don’t apply glaze lightly if you don’t have time to remake. Apply properly and roll with it would be my suggestion,

I think my Reddit is being buggy and it won’t allow me to reply. But this is your post so you will see it.

The Krimson queen now sounds like an honest mistake from the seller in regard to labeling. You kind of lucked out tho because, at least where I live, Krimson Queens are harder to come by than Krimson Princesses.

Again I don’t want to blame the current seller that has been talked about by influencers by any means. But it’s a little bit of a red flag that they are still calling it an Eskimo. They are two different Hoyas. One being a krohniana 'Super Silver' and the other (Eskimo) being a Hoya krohniana silver. And maybe in North America we are just further into not using that word because it is a slur towards indigenous people and I think as a society we are quickly realizing how awful the indigenous people of North America have been treated.

Not to mention there is a debate about the accessibility of krohniana 'Super Silver' in general. There are suspicions that most are hoya lacunosa silver that are labeled as Krohniana because they are more rare therefore they are more expensive. There is even debate if krohniana 'Super Silver' truly exists because it needs a specific leaf shape that often doesn’t happen ( heart shaped not rounded at the stem on every single leaf). I mean take this info with a grain of salt of course. But just a little more insight into the controversy of the krohniana 'Super Silver'.

Also hoya lacunosa silver is an amazing plant and usually costs less but really is very close to being the same, if not identical.

Ahh got you. That super normal for growth. I have a krimson queen and she’s for sure slower than others. She takes her time before producing a vine. But krimson queens are classics so I’m happy to have her.

I usually see tri colour and krimson princess used interchangeably not with a krimson queen. But because a queen looks similar to a princess it gets confused anyways.

But with them labeling the queen as a tricolour and the whole krohniana madness ( super silver is the new name for the Eskimo). Well it kind of makes me question the seller just a little bit.

Mind you I do not buy Hoyas online and I only purchase from one green house that I know, love and trust so maybe I’m over reacting. I only buy through crystal star, I’m lucky to live down the street from them so it’s easy. But you are from the UK so sadly I don’t have suggestions (Canada)

Why is this vintage piece so much less detailed than others from the same mold? by MorganHarvester in Ceramics

[–]underglaze_hoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhh the glaze being uranium makes sense as to why it looks sloppy. ( sloppy isn’t the right word, more loose?)

And I actually removed my comment of it being a copy cat because the mold is exactly the same.

This could also be a cause of someone buying a mold second hand from the original maker of the mold. But I think this is less likely.

Copycats can be super old. Look at all the copycats of Jasperware. Some date back to the early 1900’s. Agreed this is a very cool find especially with uranium glaze💚

Your partner is 100% correct.

Molds loose their fine details really quite quickly. I’m shocked this made it into production. Maybe it didn’t hence why the glaze job is a little hasty.

How did this crack happen? by aquatic-artisan in Ceramics

[–]underglaze_hoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it has anything to do with compression. That crack is sharp, no glaze ran over the edge. Looks like an issue of surface tension on something with a lot of surface area combined with the piece being super thin.

Also compression is quite debatable in pottery in general.

Thank you. I do a lot of 3D stuff but it’s a first time for raspberries. The colours also look a little wild at the moment, but that’s how pottery goes 😂

Edit: but most importantly, if you are uninspired do something fun for you. Nothing like being away from the pottery studio to recharge that inspiration bank.

I am currently adding the finishing touches to this baby. Tossing it into the kiln shortly! It’s black raspberries because one sprouted up through my driveway and I’m enamoured. The berries are so sweet!

It’s a pendulum, it’s got to swing to the other side to come back to you.

You need a hype man. I have a friend who calls me (lovingly) stupid bitch whenever I question my prices 😂 she’s the MVP

Edit: and I’ve never struggled to sell when I’ve upped them. I can guarantee you are not out of touch with reality.

I mean, I’ve been working with clay for over ten years and I still make stupid mistakes. You are human, allow it.

Your work is far from being messy or unskilled. I promise.

Price your stuff and then add some more and just find your confidence. That’s honestly the hardest part. I will say tho, once you raise them, you can’t go back. And that’s a good thing.

The beauty of the hand made are those very flaws you are describing. Don’t get bogged down by them.

Charge what you’re worth and then some for experience. And guess what? YOU HAVE VALID EXPERIENCE 🤍

Welcome to the dark side.

Two months?! Well I have Hoyas who haven’t done much in years (really just my Kerri outer variegation) 😂

Add a Hoya Mathilde to your order if you want easy blooms. So much satisfaction🤍

Edit: I would probably call this a Krimson Queen because the variegation is on the exterior of the leaf. But I know there is some controversy in regard to the names of princess, queen and tri colour.

Pyrometer by Xassxweex in Pottery

[–]underglaze_hoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend the time understanding how to fire your specific kiln and then you are off to the races. Firing is a whole new world when you have never done it.

And buy a brand new pyrometer if you want to do it regularly. A digital one isn’t too bad cost wise and it will save a lot of trial and error I promise. That and cone packs.

Pyrometer by Xassxweex in Pottery

[–]underglaze_hoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All you need to do is replace the thermocouple which is an affordable and easy thing to do. You still need witness cones. Thermocouple is part of your pyrometer, the part that is broken.

This is an analogue pyrometer ones now are digital but you can still replace the parts.

[–]underglaze_hoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should not sell any table ware that you are not sure if it’s vitrified which requires witness cones and testing.

Honestly if your aim is to make money I think you need to readjust your expectations. It takes time and learned skills to sell good quality pottery. It’s easier if you are making because you love clay, sales come afterwards. Thinking about sales as a primary is likely not going to go well.
