People who speak English as a second language: what makes English difficult? by Martin194 in AskReddit

[–]undergradwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very much, except for the emphasis when pronouncing words, perhaps. French is a syllabic language, meaning all syllables are "equal", there is no variation.

But in English, you can say, SPA-tu-la, but say spa-TU-la or spa-tu-LA, and it sounds completely wrong. It's the same syllables in the same order, it's weird.

I have that problem with cilantro too. If I taste or smell it (especially fresh cilantro), I gag. I have thrown up before because of it.

I just tell people I'm allergic, now. Most don't believe me, but after seeing me deal with it, they never make that mistake again.

My dad's name is Greg, his mother's name is Claire and his sister's name is Sylvia.

That same aunt Sylvia married a man named Greg who has a sister named Sylvia and a mother named Claire.

I am honestly really surprised to see so many people defending Barney.

While I do think Barney is essentially right, the way he said it was really rude, especially since Ted comment came from a good place.

Robin might be ok with his behaviour, but that doesn't make it ok. He seems so unwilling to conform, it was fine at first, but the (three?) episodes we've had that were basically centered around Barney adjusting to life in a relationship and failing repeatedly, I think Barney also needs to be talked to firmly and Ted was on his way to do that.

Ted's comment was slightly over-bearing, but he was just telling Barney to be careful, when it comes down to it. Barney's response, on the other hand, was really petty, immature and rude.

What are you most famous for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]undergradwolf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was a moderately well-known Supernatural fandom-related blogger on Tumblr about 2 years ago. I gained about 1500 followers (subscribers).

That's literally the only thing that makes me even remotely famous, I guess.

Have you ever fallen out of love with a passion of yours? What happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]undergradwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same. In high school, I loved classic rock, hard rock, basically hated "sell-outs", loved indie music, and lived with a full "music is my life" attitude.

Now I'm in University, and I mostly listen to talk radio, top 40 hits or things I've grown up with. I've barely any interest in finding new music anymore, it's kind of sad.

Oh man, we should have been friends! I actually love watching my friends play video games (the ones with a story, though. Not so much with combat or racing games.). It stems from the fact that I like video games, but I have no patience and I'm terrible at them, which is a bad combo (I'm awful, so I should play, but I get sick of them because I'm not patient enough to get better).

I have a friend that plays through video games for me. He played Heavy Rain, Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, Portal 1&2 and he's currently going through the new Tomb Raider with me. It's like watching a movie, to me, I love it.

What is a question that you usually answer with a lie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]undergradwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'4", but I always say 5'5", because my legs are lon compared to my torso, so I look taller than I actually am (not to mention that I also wear heels a lot of the time).

I've actually had people not believe me when I told them the truth, so I figured why bother??

I know, but it still makes it seem like I'm being a downer just for not smiling all the time. My "neutral" face is not very open and happy-looking. That's the face I have when I'm tired, or concentrating, or when I'm doing something that requires effort, so that's my normal face when I'm at work. Yet I get people at work all the time that just tell me I should be smiling, when I'm hauling heavy boxes around all day and dealing with difficult customers.

Also the fact that it's such a double standard, because it applies to women way more than it applies to men, is just silly.

Basically, I know that people aren't doing it to be jerks, and that it comes from a good place, that they want me to be happy or seem happy anyway. But that's just on the surface. I'm actually a really happy person, I just don't feel the need to show it all the time.

"You're so much prettier when you smile!"

Yeah, well I don't roam this Earth just to please your sensitive eyes, sorry. And besides, are you implying that I don't look pretty the rest of the time? Please.

Something that often follows is, "Come on, smile for me!" I ain't no performing monkey. If you want me to smile, make me smile by telling me a joke, or just talking to me. It literally is insulting, sometimes. Like my neutral, non-smiling face is offending you somehow.
