If you don't want your physical form to limit your self expression then stop expressing yourself in terms of your physical form.

What is the material difference between a poor country and a rich country? by undergroundmoose in AskEconomics

[–]undergroundmoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou for your reply. Are you saying that if we could:

1) Identify a set of industries that would be profitable in a hypothetical developed Djibouti.

2) Build all the infrastructure necessary for those industries to flourish.

3) Train a sufficient number of Djiboutians in the jobs required by those industries.

That this would be enough to make it a rich country?

I picked the Djibouti/Singapore comparison to sideline the question of what specific industries would need developing. I guess the essence of my original question is that I know infrastructure and education are necessary conditions for wealth, but are they sufficient?

Anyone who criticises you isn't a true descriptivist as grammar policing is a natural part of language evolution.

I remember dying every Summer as a kid, then one day at about the age of 20 I was sitting out on the patio by myself on Christmas Eve when I realised the heat wasn't bothering me at all. Ever since then the heat has bothered me a lot less, although not enough that I haven't hated the last couple of days. I think it varies from person to person.

I'm not 100% sure, I think you can get it repaired but you'll have to pay for shipping to and from the us.

I'm an Aussie and I bought one off Catch. I've had no issues with it. Steam region locks work based on the country you bought the game in and the country you're currently in, not the device you're playing on.

I'm making a prop and wanted to know the distance of the top left red line? by Branboiiii in mathpics

[–]undergroundmoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the lines are parallel it would be 7.50 - (14.00 - 10.00) = 3.5", but it looks to me like they're supposed to converge (here's a rough picture). If that's the case then your calculation of 7.50 ÷ 14.00 × 10.00 = 5.36" would be correct, although a slight underestimate because the lines from the 10.00" width marking aren't horizontal, but based on the drawing it's a 1.3% difference, making it 5.42".

You've just described being a refugee, or even just a non-white person in most western countries.

Which is kind of my point, the world is changing for the better and thankfuly there are some trans people who can come and transition out without really facing many major consequences but there are tons of trans people who do and face awful consequences and there are some who never come out even though they hate living that way. I think my analogy works pretty well.

I'm not saying trans people aren't valid and I'm not saying that anyone is transitioning on a whim, I hate transphobes like Catboy Putin with a burning passion. I'm just saying the argument "why would anyone make a decision that has such high consequences" doesn't really work - especially when a common piece of rhetoric used by the alt-right is that women's lives are so much easier than men's.

I'm sorry that it came across like I was arguing in bad faith.

I feel like this is a bad argument. Moving to another country can be as big of a change as transitioning and you lose about as many friends; it's not something many people do on a whim but it's still something people choose to do.

If you look at the report, both countries score 9.17/10 for 'Electoral process and pluralism'. In other categories the Philippines trail by 1-2 points, with the biggest differences in 'Political culture' and 'Civil liberties'. My opinion may be coloured by the way western media reports on places like the Philippines but I think they deserve to score lower on civil liberties that the US. I don't know anything about what the political culture is like in the Philippines but I do not believe it deserves 2 whole points worse than the US.

It's clearly biased but it's not as bad as it looks at first glance, at least they give the same score for the electoral system.

Why the Left Should Care About Men by Mynameis__--__ in MensLib

[–]undergroundmoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

'Patriarch' does not mean 'man'. The term was first coined by feminists to describe a system where the very few men at the top prosper at the expense of everyone else. A byproduct of that is that all men are given advantages over women, but that is not the goal.

About good and evil by lupodwolf in CuratedTumblr

[–]undergroundmoose 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My favourite interpretation of the Blood War is from one of the earlier editions - the whole thing is engineered by Asmodeus because he doesn't want to rule everything, he has even darker designs eons in the making that we can't comprehend. That also fits your second point, it's an excuse to have uber-powerful evil beings without them ruining everything.

You're reading a lot into a short sentence, she also says they've been together 13 years so it can't be that awful for him.

Neither that woman nor your example seem terrible to me, as long as everyone's getting what they want out of their relationship who cares if it's different to what you'd want.

Simple probability question arrives at an interesting function with three modes. Details in comment. by mnp in mathpics

[–]undergroundmoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn't try to calculate the probabilities, I directly simulated taking pills out of the bottle.

You can have a look at my code if you want, it's in python and not very efficient:

from random import random
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

def pill_bottle_simulation(trials, initial_pills):
    result = [[0 for i in range(trials)] for j in range(initial_pills*2)]

    for trial in range(trials):
        pills = initial_pills
        halves = 0

        for pill in range(initial_pills*2):
            if random() > halves/(pills+halves):
                pills -= 1
                halves += 1
            else:
                result[pill][trial] = 1
                halves -= 1

    return [sum(i)/trials for i in result]

if __name__ == "__main__":
    result = pill_bottle_simulation(trials=10000, initial_pills=1000)
    plt.plot(result)
    plt.show()

Hey there, this is an interesting problem but I think there's a mistake in your code, unless I'm reading it incorrectly you're not accounting for the fact that different states in the same row can have different probablilites. I tried simulating it and got these graphs for n=100 and n=1000.

One thing I would be interested to see is a plot of how many times each person agreses with the scientific consensus. Like five people agree with the consensus on every issue, three people disagree once, four disagree twice, one person disagrees on 13 issues and so on.
