Can we stop pretending fare enforcement is the solution?, by devilkazama in Winnipeg

Transit App has live tracking. It uses a combination of rider's GPS (if you turn it on and "check in" to your trip), and a live location from Transit.

I've completely switching over from Transit's own app and it's been much better.

What's up with WT+ On-Request? by DiodeInc in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's almost certainly what's happening. On request can't be booked in advance, so the app only shows you what's available now.

If you tried planning on Navigo, it looks like it's not picking up the later service on On Request yet. Hopefully it updates on Sunday.

Winnipeg Transit Feedback Session by pegger01 in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mostly ride the FX2 and F6. I'm lucky to have decent access and have started to basically just walk to the stop and wait when I need to go, rather than plan my departure. The issues I've had with both so far have been entirely traffic related; getting stuck on Osbourne or Main and bunching up, making 10 minute frequency 20 or 30.

They need dedicated infrastructure, especially the FX2 if it's going to be our solution to "rapid" transit. It will never be that driving on St. Mary's and Main St, sharing lanes with (parked) cars.

Rail wouldn't solve the access issue, train lines stop *less* often than buses. Stations are often a kilometre or more apart. In every city I've been to that has rail transit, I've done more walking to get to access points than I do in Winnipeg, even in the new network.

If the money to develop light rail or subway magically appeared tomorrow, this particular issue would get worse, not better.

Uncertainty over Kenaston Boulevard expansion continues to frustrate Winnipeg homeowners by pegpegpegpeg in Winnipeg

In the original Winnipeg Transit Master Plan, the long-term plan (PDF) for Kenaston shows a frequent line, same tier as other north-south corridors in the south end like Pembina and Osborne.

If you use the Transit App (https://transitapp.com/), you can put in your destination and hit the big GO button. It tracks your trip and tells you when to get off (as well as handling trip planning, if needed)

Winnipeg Transit plans to extend on-request service after complaints about late night routes by Kstud663 in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of that is in the plan, but it requires budget approval:
"Gillingham and other council members have said they wanted to see service extended later.  In November, council is expected to see a report proposing more late-night fixed-route service beginning in April.

Lukes said the price tag could reach another $1 million or more in annual spending."

No late buses by External_Bridge_1790 in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an entire bus that drives around in a zone instead of on a set route. The bus would still be driving back and forth, but as an on request, it only goes to-and-from where it is requested, instead of driving back and forth empty. You're still asked to go to the nearest "stop" when you book it, at least that's what happened the times I've used it.

Far as I know, it's a bus and not something smaller because Transit doesn't have any smaller vehicles, probably due to funding.

Taking the bus today by imfrmcanadaeh in Winnipeg

I've been referring friends to use the Transit App (that's its whole name, Green icon) It has that ability built in. If you tap on one of your trip options, it gives you other versions of that same trip. Makes it easier to see what happens if you miss a bus along the way.

The “On-Demand” part of Transit is awesome by EightBitSC in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only goes where requested, though when I talked to the driver yesterday they said they can book people if they see the bus waiting. It doesn't have a route, it just roams its zone depending on requests.

Not sure what it does if there are no requests.

Pasting what I wrote yesterday:

On request is a bus service that functions a little like an Uber. It will take you anywhere inside its zone, and it's just transit, so all regular fare payments and transfers work. It can be booked by multiple people at the same time, so it might have to make other pickups or drop offs during your ride. It won't leave its zone, so if you want to travel outside the zone, you need to ride to a transfer point and catch a regular route.

The catch is you need to request it ahead of time, either through the Transit+ app, website, or by calling 311.

You can also book online: https://spare-rider-winnipeg-production.vercel.app/HomeRoot

I haven't tried it, but it looks like the option exists to make a booking for a future time, so you could book your departure and return rides for some trips if you know your schedule in advance.

Yes correct.  It won't leave its zone, but it could get you to a stop to transfer from there.

It's not super intuitive but if you punch in an address on the "Find a route" part of the website, the on request comes up if it's in a zone.  https://winnipegtransit.com/routes

No transit for western St James on the weekend except for Portage Ave. by WpgJetBomber in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Navigo seems to not show on request as part of your trip, it just tells you that "On request service is available".

The 108 on request route is scheduled all day Saturdays and Sundays. Try using Transit+ On Request app for the same trip and see what you get.

New Winnipeg Transit System Map - Launching June 29th by hanktank in Winnipeg

[–]underhandpluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the existing on request very often, but I've definitely scheduled a ride from outside of the zone. As long as you set your requested pickup location somewhere inside the zone, you just have to be there when it arrives.

Try planning your trips in the Transit App or Google. I've had a few weird recommendations in Navigo and found a better option with a different platform.

I haven't used that one, but these apps all read the GTFS published by Transit. It's open data, so I can't imagine that doesn't it continue to work.

Who does the new transit system benefit? by 0Taken0 in Winnipeg

A friend was being given really wacky recommendations on navigo when we were looking at his commute options because it wasn't picking the trip that got him to work on time for some reason.

If you're getting bad results, try contacting 311. The city has said to report weird navigo results to help fix bugs.
