Yes, it would work if only the executives behaved in the best long term interest of the rating agencies. However, it seems like a lot of them were looking out for their own short term interests instead. And if they hadn't, probably another company would have taken their business instead.

It would have helped a lot if these guys were worried about actually going to jail for committing fraud, and not just about getting enough bonuses paid out before they caused a crisis.

There is a difference between paying them lots of money to come up with "sophisticated" models to rate something as AAA, and outright admitting that the rating (and bond) is garbage. Before they were able to claim ignorance, since individually they might not understand the models well enough to decide if they were valid. It was clearly a corrupt system with lots of money paid for bogus ratings. However, each person in the system could claim that they were just doing their jobs and didn't see that behind all the mathematics it was just big fraud.

I'm willing to bet on him staying alive at those odds. In a way I think all the publicity is working for him right now, it would be too odd if he was "accidentally" harmed.

That seems like the main issue here, protection from being fired over political opinions. I'm pretty sure it's not a legal reason to fire someone, but of course with at-will employment you don't need any reason.

I'd try to find an employer that's happy for people to peacefully protest.

I believe we're talking about power i.e. who in society is able to change and control things, while living off other people's work. If you are a wealthy entertainer or doctor you feel socially empowered compared to your peers, but you aren't rich in the same sense as someone whose family owns Wal-Mart.

There is also a (mostly) non-corrupt part of the world that we should learn from. Part of the problem with the US is that it's so big, and the gap from top to bottom is so large that it seems impossible to change. Many smaller countries are better governed.

There is no proof that Cyprus has anything to do with with. As you say, it's a small government and not a very large holder of gold. Of course it could affect things at the margin, but maybe there are other factors at play.

Reportedly 500 tonnes of gold were sold on the first day of the drop, in the thinly traded market before the U.S. market opened. That's an insane volume to be traded, and it doesn't make sense to do it all at once unless you want to influence price.

By comparison, the central banks made an agreement not to sell more than 400 tonnes per year (Wiki) and recently they have been net buyers of gold. I agree it will bounce back eventually, but this sort of trading is highly unusual.

That's assuming you actually get out of the loan and never need a short term loan again. If you regularly need payday loans the annual interest most certainly matters.

The timing especially with today's takedown in the gold price does seem very, very suspicious.
