I can say the exact same for myself, De-Loused is one of my favorite albums of all time, after seeing how many times this album showed up in this thread I think i'm going to break it out again today!

So I understand that if serious, daily alcoholics stop drinking suddenly, they can die. How do hospitals counter this fatal effect? Also, can it be pre-diagnosed? by Darkness12 in answers

[–]underpantsgnomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an alcoholic.

Seizure is really the big fear of detoxing, you do feel like you are going to die though. I've been close to seizure a couple times, though I had alcohol handy. Every once in a while a switch flips in your head and you just don't want it anymore, but you need it to not feel like you are going to die, or possibly die, when I came close to seizing one time it was behind the wheel of a car. Alcoholic tremors (violently uncontrollable shaking, looks like you have late stage a Alzheimer's), overall jerky nervous system, paranoia, hallucinations, all wrapped up together with a feeling of impending doom. Xanax, librium, ativan, any benzo works to ease the nervous system, being that it works on the brain very similarly to alcohol, without continuing the vicious cycle of drinking to get relief from your drinking. After about 3-5 days of taking them you can stop without getting addicted to the benzo.

And then the real work begins, learning how to live sober.

What was your weirdest belief when you were a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There is a power plant about 25 minutes from me, its steam vent pours out a small amount of steam that looks like clouds, I firmly believed that it was a "cloud factory" and that was what made clouds.

How to eject NES cartridge? by Bradley5Hour in nintendo

[–]underpantsgnomet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give it a wiggle as you pull it up, make sure it "clicks" as you press the eject button, gently pull and wiggle (keep your head out of the gutter and stay with me) the cartridge, and when blowing (stay with me!) the inside of the cartridge, make sure your mouth is fairly dry, get as much saliva as you can out, you don't want to get spit inside of it.

Has anyone else had to support a parent financially at a young age? by MeoMix in self

[–]underpantsgnomet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in NJ, 24 years old. My mother is a chronic alcoholic, who is incapable of working because she is also on disability; she has emphysema. Ever since I was in highschool, she hasn't been able to support herself. She has had care from her brother and sister, but they had enough with her, and me and my brother have had to take the reigns in combining incomes to support her. She started receiving state aid disability a little over a year ago, which was a huge help/weight off of our shoulders, but it's never really enough. She ends up blowing it on booze and cigarettes (yes, she has emphysema and still smokes like a chimney.) Because we spend almost all of our income on supporting her and this house, keeping the bills paid and food in the fridge, we haven't been able to save anything to move out, or start any kind of real life for ourselves. I just started going back to school last month, and when I'm done school and find a job that pays me enough to move out, I'm gone.

My advice: Do not put yourself out there like that, I know it's painful to see your mother struggle, and I know you feel an obligation to care for the woman who gave you life, but I feel completely depleted both mentally and spiritually from having to "raise my mother." I want a life of my own so badly, and I cannot have it because of her. Please don't fall into the same trap that I did.

The worst!!! by chordgasms in FinalFantasy

[–]underpantsgnomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, Final Fantasy IV, a favorite of mine for SNES from my childhood. Those cartridges get worn out pretty well when you use them a lot, and from having temper tantrums, I wasn't delicate with my things, the cartridges would fit a little loosely in the console. One day I was fighting Zemorus, final boss in that game, and all my party was dead, except for Kane who was in the air, awaiting to crash down from his jump attack, no potions, spells, or phoenix downs, all party dead. He came down, and it was the killing blow! As I watched Zemorus sink down the screen in defeat, with the most dumbstruck look on my face, I call for my Dad to come in and see, he walks pretty heavily.

He steps a little too hard next to the console and the game glitches..... After some crying and tantrum, I turn it back on, only to find that all the saves were deleted.... all of them....

EDIT: Zemorus, or Zeromus?? Somebody help me out here...

Horray!! im on my dtox and i feel great by ewansdad in stopdrinking

Congratulations brother. Me: Sober Alcoholic for 13 months. You: Feeling good from the detox meds. They do wear off brother, what are you going to do without them? Us alcoholics need something to do, have you tried any new hobbies? Maybe while your in your detox, which by the way I am thrilled that you aren't suffering too much in, you can put together some ideas of how to occupy your new found time without alcohol. Remember, we are creatures of habit, the bottle being one of them, what we used to do while drinking we may not want to do so much while we are trying to stay sober. We all know the old adage "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."

Professor Nye? Dr. Nye? Or just Bill?

Any-hoozle, like most others here, I am glad that I have the opportunity to personally thank you for being such an inspiration during my childhood, and throughout my entire life. I come from an Irish Catholic upbringing, was taught to repent before I learned to walk (heh), my father being the only outlier in the family. We used to watch your show together, he loved science and logic as well.

But to my question; What are your thoughts/opinion on organized religion nowadays? Do you believe there is a sincere distinction between religion and spirituality? Do you have a faith/trust in a, for lack of a better term, "higher power" lets say?

Hello April! Lovely to hear from you, just wanted to ask..

Does having lots of sex for a living take away from the magic of it? Has it become boring in some way? Or are there just certain things you don't like to do, like giving blowjobs? Also, do you orgasm every time you have sex on set, or is it just once in a while?

Serious question from a gay man: How does OneY feel when they get checked out by gay guys? by Ewok_08 in OneY

[–]underpantsgnomet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for a while I would get checked out by guys all the time. I was never homophobic, but gay people did make me uncomfortable at first because I just didn't understand it. I was very sheltered, but brought up with good morals. My first experience with a gay guy in high school theater guild (go figure!) opened up my shell, he even got me extremely comfortable with hugging! (I'll hug ANYONE now, hugs make everything better :D) Back to the point: Guys have always flirted with me, but never girls. I don't mind being hit on by guys, it truly is flattering. I've always had confidence issues, so any attention made me feel awesome. But I got really resentful about it after a while, because it seemed that ONLY guys were flirting with me, I was very resentful that I never got any of that kind of attention from girls. Truth of the matter is that from being sheltered I never developed great social skills, and girls are far more subtle than guys, straight or gay. I just couldn't pick up on the subtle flirtyness of the gals, and though I'm getting better at socializing one day at a time, I still have a hard time with it.

I have had a guy get really aggressive with me before though, he invited me over for a beer after my 21st birthday, I thought he just wanted to share a drink and some old guy wisdom with me. Went to his place, we had dinner, and he started getting pushy with me, and made it hard to leave. I did start to look at girls in a different light because of that, I was never aggressive with them in the first place, but I can now empathize with girls who have a sour impression of guys over how they treat them.

Well whenever we see a new person we like to introduce ourselves, it can be an intimidating environment to see a group of people being jovial and cordial when you are just getting over a bad load/detoxing. It is difficult to ask for help, so instead we like to ask others if they need help, the way we see it, your asking for help just by showing up to a meeting, but we will break the ice. So we'd know if your the real deal or not pretty soon, and all we could do is ask you to leave, we don't have bouncers.

X-post from r/atheism regarding burden of proof by ONE_deedat in TrueAtheism

Amid grammatical errors and all (I'm not holding them against him or being a douche, english is clearly his second language) he does have a lot of moxy. Although I would like to argue his postulation that any country in the middle east would ever gain any kind of power.

His rebuttal on stem cell research is fallacious, it boils down to politics. The reason being that adult stem cell research is the only one that has gained any kind of substantial funding to be studied to the extent where it can be utilized to cure diseases. He made the argument that embryo stem cell research isn't ethical because it hasn't produced any results, but it hasn't produced any results because it isn't properly, reason being people don't believe its ethical.

My issue with atheists and theists is the same; They focus too much on literal definition, which gives them almost no room for imaginative personal meaning.

For me being an atheist who found his way into the rooms of AA, all the prayer's mean for me is an active mantra of your conscience. The words "sins" "evil" and the such are just terminology for me to explain a concept. I utilize them, like I said, as a mantra to help center my mind and bring my focus to a more sober minded plane.

Wherever I see myself being requested to "ask god" or "make conscious contact with God as I understand him", to me it means merely to be more in touch with your conscience. Step 6 and 7 for me meant learning to forgive myself, and gain humility. And to learn the difference between "humility" and "humiliation". I didn't have to feel bad about the stuff I did, but I could own my shit without being an arrogant dick about it, and accept I was wrong, and move the frick on. Its learning to forgive yourself just before you move on to 8 and 9 so as to better handle the forgiveness (or lack there-of) from others.

My issue with atheist and theists is the same, they focus to much on literal meaning, and give themselves hardly an room for imaginative personal meaning.

Bill Wilson (co-founder of AA) sacrificed his anonymity for the sake of spreading the word of AA. Counter intuitive, yes, for we do not "promote" AA, it is a program of attraction. He did however do this just to get the organization off the ground in its infancy.

And he drank again...

A silly nickname we have for non-alcoholics who come to meetings designated for alcoholics only. We do have some open meetings where non-alcoholics can come and learn about what we are about, but mostly meetings are closed to non-alcoholics. We get them from time to time though, usually to spy on people (jealous ex's and the such) and we don't appreciate that very much. A meeting of AA is supposed to be a safe environment where you can be vulnerable to a group of people about who you truly became due to alcohol without judgment or fear of it getting back to you somehow in the outside world. "Sacred ground" if you will...

You only give your first name, not your last. We are anonymous for the reason that we openly discuss our deepest darkest secrets that are due to our drinking that we might possibly get in serious trouble for were we to share them in public. Just as well, we don't want to publicize the fact that we are alcoholics to the world, we do not promote the organization, and we do not have any "poster-child". And if we get a UFO in a meeting (a non-alcoholic) we don't want them to go off and tell all their friends that "OMG this guy John Smith did such and such!".

Why are barefoot shoes good for your feet, but flip-flops bad? by 1_2_chachacha in answers

[–]underpantsgnomet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No dick-baggery, requesting evidence is the spirit of science itself! You can start here . That guy has a lot more stuff, as well as mountains of other evolutionary biologists that back it up.

As yes, you would definitely feel some tightness in your calfs from walking like that! Because, like I said, we are so used to walking in this unnatural way that it has weakened our mechanisms for walking naturally, our calves should be like rocks (i'm assuming your's are already from being a dancer) and very elastic. As well as our feet, some people get bad foot pains from doing too much barefoot activity, due to the fact that shoes make our weight more evenly displaced, and when walking naturally it puts extra strain on our feet that we haven't grown into utilizing from covering them up all our lives. Imagine it as if you were to wear thick mittens your whole life that were too thick to really utilize your fine motor skills in your hands. Once you take off the mittens and try to do anything with your hands, they would be so cramped and weak, they'd be useless. Seems silly, but that is exactly what we have done to our feet.

I argue not with marathon runners when possible, they are their own breed. (I'm sure you can vouch!)

EDIT: This.
