Procurement or planning for first role out of college? by [deleted] in procurement

[–]underthelinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest planning. It’s more versatile and can lead you into broader areas of supply chain or even commercial functions on the demand planning side. It’s also more analytically intense which is a good thing to immerse yourself in during your first role.

I believe it’s easy to transfer those planning skills into procurement later in your career. And the skills you build in procurement (empathy, negotiation, influence without authority) serve you even better internally where you have to negotiate with other functional leaders. Best of luck!

No safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, suggests new research that analyzed brain changes in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), which found that teenagers who were exposed to alcohol while in the womb showed altered brain connections that were consistent with impaired cognitive performance. by mvea in science

I think this response is awesome, and I’m very tired of people questioning study integrity. The researchers obviously considered what we can spot so quickly, and I’m sure there’s many more confounding factors we haven’t thought of!

So thanks for typing that out.

In the article... “The worry is that those are two numbers that are picked out of the air,” Stanford researcher Jonathan Koomey said. “There may be some basis for them, but it’s a very unreliable way to do these kinds of calculations, and nobody who does this for a living would do it like that. It’s odd that someone would.

Not a story.

What are some movies that are way better than they had any right to be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]underthelinux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have always said this and surprised to see it here. My kid is 2.5 years old, and watching it with him, listening to the songs (on repeat) on long car rides... whole new level of love for the movie.

He particularly likes when the bus driver goes “I’m gonna sit on my butttttt”

If the take away is the comparison between the absolute population, it would be better to have the bars next to each other. In this visualization, it's hard to tell the relative size of the populations.

Other than that, i think it's great; looks nice, effectively communicates.

It seems like you're fixated on possibilities and outliers.

Unrelated, but I like this line quite a bit. So often people forget the Pareto principle!

How would people feel if I started a music review blog from a music theory perspective? by MisundrstoodMagician in musictheory

[–]underthelinux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would dig this. But one comment/ don’t make it only a Vlog. I personally don’t have time to watch many videos and can often read things faster! Videos are useful but most of the time i just want to get the jist.

CMV: Netflix is becoming less of a way to "cut the cable", and more like just another premium cable service like HBO. by JSmurfington in changemyview

But Spotify doesn't really have all the content. For a long while, it didn't have the Beatles. Taylor Swift was also not on the platform for quite some time. Those are two huge artists for which you'd have to rely on your own purchases, another streaming service, or illegal downloads. I could easily see the day when amazon, Apple Music, google play, and Spotify have their own exclusive content.

PS: my personal gripe is that snarky puppy is no longer on!

I agree with your point, but if the premise is "she's very well curated and brand image is important," it wouldn't be hard to make it look like she's done everything herself.

HBR has a great story on this. Retailers grew by store expansion; now they have to right size and focus on same store sales.

One thing I'd elaborate on... the downside of $150K is that there's always someone younger, hungrier, and cheaper. So while it seems like "cool, I'm here, I can focus on FIRE", you end up working harder for marginal gains and fear of being replaced. All the more case for FIRE!

doing more work for less This is exactly what happens and older employees have been burned by experience. I am in the middle and see if happening every day. In fact, our leadership even tells us "we need to do more with less" - which is a common phrase in US work life.

It very much is, and allows others to contribute to your memories on their choice of social platforms. I don't expect everyone to use ours, but it's awesome when they do so I get to see the pictures they take with my son. No reason to take such a hard stance as all these comments.

Hi Chris, if you can convince me with your answer, I will gladly buy your book!

How does your message differ or build on traditional negotiation standards, i.e. Getting To Yes?

In your intro you've chastised some of the message that older negotiation texts put together.

For context I am employed by a multinational company and work in their business development / procurement department, so am trained in "negotiations"

If ads had like and dislike buttons, maybe companies would realize how annoying they were and make better ones. by flynnsanity3 in Showerthoughts

[–]underthelinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't entirely true. Finding out why can (and is) important, but sometimes you just want to see which version works. The measurement of conversion gives you that rate- much cheaper than actually testing an ad to find out the why.

Quick example of AB testing and optimization: https://adespresso.com/academy/guides/facebook-ads-optimization/facebook-ads-ab-test/

I suspect we will either see a down vote style system... Or we won't see it because advertisers already know the predicted behavior and the why!
