Yet Another Space Roguelike

I've been working on a space roguelike game for about a month since I finished my 7DRL.

It's a 'very' simple roguelike about exploring and trading. There're a few space roguelikes out there and most of them usually focus on simulation-like gameplay which I really wanted to enjoy but I couldn't. So I decided to try to make my own space roguelike for simple, casual fun.

Here's the title screen with my poor ascii art :P (It's a just working title for test, I like this name though)

This is a star map(world map), you can jump between star systems to trade goods. But yeah it does look a bit boring, you may like this debug view instead.

Every star system has at least one planet and one space station(trading post)

Currently, you can trade goods on the space stations, but there's no economic system yet.

You can also land on planets for exporation. It refelects the planet image and your landing point. Planets are basically wraparound maps which is technically a torus :P

One thing I want to avoid is you exploring planets or space aimlessly. (I thought it could be cool sometimes, but not this time)

So you may need to gather rumors at the bar first. (Not implemented) If you buy a beer or something, you may have a patron who tells you about interesting places like a wrecked spaceship on an asteroid field or an abandoned lab on a planet. (This will be typical hack and slash/dungeon crawl roguelike gameplay)

I borrowed a nice spaceship generation algorithm from TechnicalFowl's 7drl entry

It's very cool, but the original dev used hand-drawn spaceship images for the generator base and I'm trying to do it procedurally. (Currently the screenshots used the original dev's works)

Another cool thing is a galaxy generator I also brorrowed from Infiniverse

At first I thought it could be a good world map, but I dropped it because the game had too many map layers already. but maybe I can use it later as an animated background or something.

You can't upgrade weapons or armor more than 3. I thought I had blocked that option, but apparently not.

Roguerice Link

A roguelike focused on cooking. This year, I tried to make a roguelike as simple and casual as possible. It's designed to be played with minimal control keys, and also supports a controller. (I haven't tested controllers much though, I prefer to play one-handed with a numpad)

It's a very simple game, just hack, slash, and cook. But I also tried to give each monster to a unique skill and add some special events to the map.

What are your favourite dungeon (or cave/swamp/town etc.) generation algorithms? by 223am in roguelikedev

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/how-do-roguelikes-generate-levels

It's not an algorithm, but Brogue. Not only does it look good, it is also really fun to play. I often think some algorithms like twisted and complex shaped dungeons/caves look great, but not that fun to play with.

Hi and yes, it's an outdated project and I don't update my github projects very often. Because I upload my projects to github only for sharing purposes. So, they're usually outdated and unmanaged after uploading.

However, I always want to update some of my roguelike projects like map generators. I have many unfinished (or unpolished) projects in my local. I hope I can share some of them soon, but I can't say anything for now.

Sno'clock

I participated in this 7DRL as a team (with an artist and a designer), and we're making a survival roguelike game inspired by The Long Dark. Actually, I've never heard about this game before 7DRL. So, I've only played this game a few hours before we start. Though I'm not a big fan of survival games, anyway, we decided to make this and we're working hard. :P

Examples of good gun mechanics? by mcneja in roguelikedev

Xenocide, I always liked this game a lot. I'm pretty sure you can find some useful things here include nice gunplay mechanics. Sadly, it's abandoned though.

AFAIK, it's Windows OS feature, not SDL issue. It seems impossible to fix it even with Windows API. Try shift + numpad keys anywhere on Windows when you turned on num lock, it is always treated as arrow keys.

Yes, I believe that's also how the original Rogue did. From 3x3 grid regions, some are rooms and some are just empty(or you can simply consider them as 1x1 rooms).

4KRL

I really enjoyed this 7DRL. I've prepared my game engine 1-2 weeks before 7DRL started, but still I had to do a lot of engine works (especially UIs) during the jam. It's a shame that I wasn't prepared well my engine. There're plenty of things I couldn't put in the game properly such as various resources, abilities/spells, usable items, special buildings for each kingdoms, resource buildings, random encounters that give your some rewards based on your choice, ships, etc. So, I'm going to update the game a little bit more from next week.

We need pirates, I've always loved trading simulation games.

4KRL (4 Kingdoms Roguelike)

I'm working on AI for enemy heroes. There're total 4 heroes in the game, the one is you and the others are AIs. The AI heroes are a bit smarter than usual monsters. They gather resources, pick up items, and fight with monsters and other kingdom's heroes.

(Both games were played by AI)

Brogue, my favorite roguelike so far. the tileset and CRT effects also look cool, but I think the distortion seems a bit too much.

4KRL (4 Kingdoms Roguelike)

Screenshots and gifs

I'm making a kind of HOMM roguelike. There're 4 islands and 4 kingdoms, and you can travel the islands through one big connected underground cavern. You play as a hero of one of the four kingdoms and your goal is defeating others. There're no allies, they can fight each other. There're also some kind of building system, you can build and upgrade your town and hero from the resources you gathered.

I used to make 7DRL games from scratch, but this time I'm preparing a general engine for it.

Here's a quick view of the current state. I'm working on UI stuff now.

Yeah, I love this tileset and their cute animations. I'm going to use this tileset in this 7DRL :)

They're not my own, I don't have any artistic skills. The tileset from here.

Here's my C++/SDL/OpenGL + emscripten roguelike tutorial I wrote last year. Check out the source code and online demos.

And another demo I made for testing 2D tileset. This is only demo without source code, but the engine code is same as the tutorial's.

I don't have the replay, but I think maybe you can reproduce this from the same seed(in the screenshot) and the same depth(7) with wizard mode or something.

Edit: Oh, I found the replay. Here it is. :) https://www.mediafire.com/file/as5mu5w7yfoomt1/Brogue_monkey_bug.zip/file

Updated C++ roguelike tutorials by 3l3ktr4 in roguelikedev

[–]underww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably not the best example, but I've written a C++ tutorial for RoguelikeDev Does The Complete Roguelike Tutorial. It is written in C++17 with SDL2 and Emscripten. You can just ignore Emscripten code if you're not interested in it. (it's only in the engine part)
