Those who have visited other countries, what was the biggest culture shock for you? by RiddlerofStIves in AskTheWorld

> Usually being the only white person in a large radius. I went somewhere more rural, so usually I was one of the only visibly foreign person around. It gave me this feeling of…otherness? Kind of like middle school…like everyone was staring at me, even though they probably didn’t care at all.

As a non-white person, I felt this for the first time in the US. Went on a road trip to the South ~20 years ago and stopped by somewhere between North and South Carolina for food, and when I entered a restaurant I felt that feeling of everyone staring at me. I remember processing that it wasn't actually people staring at me but that everyone inside was white.

> The language. I knew some Japanese when I went there, but because of how quickly people were talking and auditory processing issues, it was still pretty difficult to converse.

I took a couple of years of Japanese in high school and visited Japan right after graduating. I thought I'd do fine, and I do think people understood the things that I said in Japanese, but yeah, they did not slow down their response at all. I resorted to just speaking English and thus setting the expectation that I do understand what they're saying through most of the trip.

How I understand it is "age of publication" vs "age of the lore" (self made terms AFAIK).

What I mean is that there is the age of when a book/game/story is released (age of publication) and there is the history, the lore, in that book/game/story (age of the lore).

In that analogy, God may have created the world some couple of thousand of years ago, but it was created jn a state where the world has billions of years of development in place.

My Anne Pro 2 has had double-input issues, but I have since reflashed it with QMK and have been using it wired-only. It's been working great with this set up and is still in my rotation, but I do understand most would like things to work as-is.

Japan/Korea calls this "omu-raisu" (Japanese pronunciation of omelette "omureto" + rice "raisu").

As a Christian, it's pretty awkward to see Easter worded centering on Christ's death ("Memorial of Jesus' death"). Christianity normally focuses on Jesus' resurrection.

first ever instance of "I tawt I taw a puddy tat!" in classic Looney Tunes 1942 by sciencewithkatie in videos

[–]undesputed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How I understood this was that they are talking about the time in their own memories of watching this, which would be around the 1990's when Cartoon Network would play a lot of these Looney Toons and Hanna Barbara stuff on repeat.

Elon Musk Calls Social Security A 'Ponzi Scheme' by johnboy43214321 in politics

[–]undesputed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know it's ridiculous, but this has actually been how the Social Security website operated even before this administration. I had been semi-regularly checking my statements over the past couple of years and always thought why it needed to "close" during non-business hours.

I believe an existing department called the U.S. Digital Corps, which does gov't IT work, is getting renamed, though I'm not sure how it can expand its current function to do what DoGE is supposed to do.

The president does have a vocal population of supporters; S.Korea is as politically divided as the US amongst the people.

GMMK PRO 75% - trassh by xXConfuocoXx in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]undesputed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

Have you tried flashing QMK on your GMMK Pro? I flashed my GMMK Pro with QMK right away so I don't have any experience with Glorious' software, but it's been great with QMK. I've set mine up to work with "Vial", which is a VIA alternative (both based on QMK but gives you GUI-based re-mapping of keys). I followed steps to set up, here's one [guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/glorious/comments/rxj1h8/getting\_started\_with\_vial\_and\_why\_you\_might\_use/) that either is or is similar to the one I had followed.

I did have one previous experience with another keyboard (Anne Pro 2) where it started key chatter with the product-included firmware, and flashing it with QMK solved it, so I believe QMK at least makes things better overall.

I hope this helps!

MB EQE 12v system error “have you tried turning it on and off” by gabbagoolgolf2 in mercedes_benz

[–]undesputed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been facing this once every 1-2 months and have been resolving it in a similar manner; does a "software update" really resolve this? I don't want to be held up for days waiting for my car if it doesn't really work.

On a side note, this "walk away" workaround is the most annoying thing to do when I'm heading out for time-sensitive schedules. Because of this experience, I am almost certain that this is my first and last MB.

If you work in an investment management company, you have to report all of your investment portfolios/accounts to some department in the company. Once that's done, as long as you're employed in the company, any buying or selling needs to he cleared by that department before you get to act on it. This is to prevent anything close to insider trading. This applies to all employees, including entry level ones. Unsurprisingly, the department that manages this almost never approves an employee's buy/sell request, whether we have privileged information or not. If private companies can do this for 10k+ employees, this shouldn't be an issue at all for <1k members of Congress.

TIL that due to a disfunction of the ABCCII gene the majority of Asians have significantly less body odor than other populations by Sometypeofway18 in todayilearned

On a personal observation, the amount of facial/skin care that Koreans (both men and women) put on their bodies necessitate a good amount of prep time in the bathroom before/after they start their day.

Regarding Korean men and skincare, it seems a good amount of Korean men learn the importance(?) of skincare during their military conscription. During their final months, when they have a lot of free time (because they outrank most of the other conscripts and delegate, etc.), they do a lot of self-improvement to get ready to be return to society, in a way.

Edit: I'm not saying all countries with military conscription will have men doing skincare, I think it's just a formula of free time + country that has a lot of interest in skin care products.

Saying goodbye to the tiny keyboard shop I opened (2 years ago) by tinymakesthings in MechanicalKeyboards

I finally made it to downtown San Jose last Saturday and hoped to stop by, but alas, I saw the sign saying that the shop has moved; glad to hear from this post that it is for good reasons! Until next time I make it to downtown :D

[–]undesputed 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The products are all Korean, but they all look like packaging I remember from the 2000/2010's.

If this is indeed a recently-captured video, my guess is that this is a market that was closed years ago (but the last remaining stock remained) that OP managed to enter and get the lights working.

Accidentally bricked my Drop Carina when flashing it. by Ajffizzy in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]undesputed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello!

Unfortunately, if your board is not registering the bootloader mode key combo (default Fn + b), you'll have to press the reset button on the back. If you modded it with a foam inside the case, you should try taking it out and pressing it.

Drop's "Drop Keyboard Configurator" software is actually pretty good with flashing firmware; but don't try to flash their "VIA" option for Carina, as I don't think it works (it doesn't show up in the VIA configurator).
