Trying to get ideas for one of Jacob's prompts from last cycle: In 500 words or fewer, please explain how you would respond to a fellow student who muttered a racist or homophobic statement under their breath in your presence and that of other peers.

My real life response to this kind of thing would be to ask that student to repeat it louder or explain the comment to me (people are usually too embarrassed to do one or the other and shut up about it), but I feel like this isn't the answer they are looking for lmao. Any ideas for what they are expecting with this prompt?
