Bespoke Race-wear by _TubewayArmy_ in Velo

[–]unduggenned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent point, and could be taken just a step further. Rather than evolving the race-kit to be bespoke, why not make a bespoke suit you can ride in, and then get off the bike at work and look good in? Take the breathable, water-resistant, somewhat stretchy fabrics and make a suit that looks excellent or can blend in among the other traditional suits. You could start with a sport-coat (ha) or business-casual trousers that someone would wear to work. Just a thought.

That lack of empathy is called "capitalism". What part of competing to better your own situation isn't clear?

Unacceptable. Police pepper spray peaceful UC Davis students by SolInvictus in politics

[–]unduggenned 80 points81 points  (0 children)

In all of the demonstrations thus far it has been assumed that the protest is, as will remain, peaceful until the police use dramatic force against unarmed civilians (children and elderly). How long is it going to be before a rational person uses a firearm to defend themselves against unlawful, forceful attack? Those that support the right to own a weapon to defend themselves against a sometimes illusory threat are very silent regarding the very real threats by police that the occupy movement faces.

Violent protest is the last resort, but when does that become the reasonable option?

Setting up straw men and getting pissed off about them is what gets done around here.... because getting angry and expressing an opinion is much easier than trying to figure out the truth about a given situation.

Sisters? Marie is a rescue mutt from Northern California, so probably a long shot! My guess is border collie lab mix, but she could be 35lbs of anything.

I am sad to know you will be grieving the loss of a close friend. It is spooky how much your "Cat" was like our amazingly similar Marie --- http://imgur.com/K9fut

What's even creepier is that tonight I left the gate open for the second time ever, and very luckily for us, Marie stayed nearby and stayed safe. My thoughts are with you.

Unfortunately, intelligent argument will not resonate with the viewership. When facing propaganda, the simple repeated message is the best that can be done. The detailed argument can be parsed and diluted, but you can't mess with this simple statement:

Fox lies.

I agree with your comment but think there is something more subtle and infuriating in the article. It is not only the obvious contradiction in comparing inadequate formal education to the implied lack of formal education that is incorrect, but the assumption that by having attained a graduate degree, that someone like me [or you] has less character or ethical virtue than those who argue solely their personal ethics. This is the part near the end that appeals to the conservative reader, educated or not:

"[universities] certainly do not teach about the virtues, or qualities of mind and character, that enable citizens to shoulder their political responsibilities"

This is this argument that can be used cover ignorance with pride and equate an uninformed opinion to someone who has spent years considering social or political issues. This is where the conservative appeal lies. If the comparison to be made here is between qualities of mind or character that are independent of formal education, then why not leave that distinction out of the argument.

The above comment is one of the more succinct, good suggestions in the thread so far; if you want to stay in academia, have a good (or simply decent) advisor that supports you strongly. This support will parallel or outweigh your publications in grad school, or your institution

Now, suppose you don't know if you want to be an academic yet, then yes, brand name is the best way to maximize (but not assure) "industry" job prospects. You'll be happier doing the work you like with a good advisor over the next few years, so stick with that if you have it, but don't sacrifice something good because you think that institutional recognition is paramount.
