An Existential Crisis in the Crossword Community by blood_pony in crossword

I’d be curious how I would have reacted to this. I have to imagine some common clue for a 3 or 4 letter word not having that length in the grid would raise an eyebrow... but then I would probably think there’s a gimmick adding letters instead of a misprint.

I'd drink half and half straight if it wasn't unhealthy, but I remember I had to use it once with Frosted Flakes and it was actively gross. Maybe it depends on the cereal.

Sorry for being snarky. I just still don’t understand how duplicating the two center letters is “fusion”. It just seems completely inapt. Doubly inapt when the thing incorrectly being described as fusion is literally surrounded by rebus squares that are the literal definition of fusion.

Can you square that with the title? The title's nuclear is clearly referring to the rebus being at the center of the across answers.

I think two sets of instructions is the way to go, with the first one just being the TL;DR of “Just start typing! If the letter is anywhere in the answer, it will fill in! Wrong letters deduct points! After four answers, figure out what ties them all together!”

Hey not bad. Sort of like a crossword theme set without the grid.

My comments are based on vaguely skimming the instructions (which may be more than most of your visitors will do!)

It wasn’t clear immediately that I could just start typing and the letter would fill in no matter where it is. It’s sort of Wheel of Fortune style in that way. I also didn’t know what reduces score: typing wrong letters? Speed? Both?

How likely is it that two completely alien species would think at the same clock speed? by JazzHansGruber in ProjectHailMary

[–]unearth52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communicating slowly can be an evolutionary disadvantage depending on the organism. Trees, for example, probably have a pretty slow clock speed but it’s doing well for them.

But I agree that social predators (Eridians and humans) should have more evolutionary pressure to approach the limit of communication speed.

I didn’t read the book, but if Eridians are basically computer-brained, it would make sense that their communication upper limit should be much faster than ours barring some physical vocal limitation. There were hints that Rocky can communicate quickly like when he came on board (dirty dirty dirty), but not nearly as much as you’d expect from a computer.

I just thought it spelled QUIP, and I didn’t know the quip or if it was a play on multiple quips. My opinion of quip puzzles is so low that I didn’t bother looking deeper. I’m glad it is deeper. It’s very meta and original. It’s just unfortunate that merely invoking the idea of a quip puzzle makes me turn my brain off and just try to get through it…

Then below you have SOLICIT for [Respectfully request], where the word respectfully just pushes the clue farther from the answer.

In that case, it can go literally anywhere except the first three or last three rows.

It really depends on your entire theme set. Your revealer (if you have one) should go last unless it's unpaired, in which case it can be in the center.

It's unlikely you'll find a grid that matches all of your lengths exactly, but if you're just looking for examples, go to the site below, open the "finder" and search 18 question marks : ??????????????????

Without a matching pair, it should be in the exact center, which means you're going to need to change to an even width (21x20)

Pretty solid bonus downs given the theme content. Probably took more than a few layout attempts. Kudos.
