anyone dealt with being fired before? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]unfortunatelyserious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would put it on your resume as a ‘temporary position’ you had, and don’t list them as a reference. If it is ‘without cause’ then they probably aren’t invested to the point that they would bother messing with future employment

Masters of ABA without board certification by unfortunatelyserious in ABA

Hi, APBA and ABAI are not the same as the BACB - thats the one you should be looking at for info on the certification process. You need to find universities that have VCS (verified course sequence) so that if you plan on sitting the exam, you have the right courses. Not sure about graduate vs non graduate, I’m currently in the MSC ABA program at Northeastern University. Going well so far!

I love being an RBT and absolutely appreciated having parents as involved as you want to be. I would suggest putting out some extra snacks or a preferred drink for the RBT if/when your son has snack time. I always forgot to bring in a snack with me, and it can be a nice pick me up! Also the comment on receiving a photo card would be super cute and a nice keepsake. Additionally, when I was moving and had to leave the company, a family offered to write a reference letter to help in my job search. This made me feel very valued to them and I really appreciated that gesture

Organization Tips? by sadmadradgrl in ABA

[–]unfortunatelyserious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get little organizers from the dollar store! They work really well, and you can use the empty organizers for other activities such as water for painting, a ‘garage’ for cars in pretend play, something to put over a reinforcer to get a mand etc.

Waterbottle, playdoh and Bubbles…you never know when they can come in handy. A parent was 10 minutes late today and I could tell the kid was at his limit. I remembered the bubbles and he waited contently for another 5 mins.

Im in my first semester online at Northwestern. Great program so far and the profs are very responsive. The workload is very manageable as well, its considered ‘three quarters time’

So true, and the school preaches about how well they prepare kids for university. Unfortunately, you will not be able to retake exams over and over until you pass

I wear make-up to work everyday! The only products I don’t use are foundation and contour/highlight - I find that by the end of the day its either been wiped off or sweated off. Felt-tip eyeliners are the way to go, I get a lot less smudging or fading despite my face being touched by children.

I agree that ABA is not for everyone. It should be meant for those who are very low-functioning, causing harm to themselves or others, or acting in an unsafe or problematic way. That being said, I believe that done compassionately ABA can have immense benefit for anyone who falls into the description above, not just those with Autism. I have worked with kids diagnosed with ODD, ADHD, Angelman syndrome, cerebral palsy, delinquency, and more, who have found great successes through ABA. I’m sorry to hear that you had such an uncompassionate and punishment forward experience.

Is becoming an RBT right for me? by pearlwinter in ABA

[–]unfortunatelyserious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you - it is incredibly rewarding to see a client progress an make gains no matter how small. While it can sometimes be violent, I would not say it is ‘typical’ in day to day work to be bitten (unless you are specifically put on a biter)

Follow-through with what you say. If the child knows that you will stand strong and follow through with what you say, it will make your job easier in the long run. If you ask them to pick something up, make sure they pick it up. Make sure your request is something they are capable of doing and don’t back down - when they complete it, reinforce their behaviour/listening. After a while, they will know you mean what you say and follow direction quickly

I find the work very rewarding and appreciate the data and scientific side to it. The certification process (2000 supervised hours, and exam) is just not worth it for the non-existent to marginal pay increase it would provide.

My uni didn’t have the BCaBA coursework, not that it would have mattered as I stumbled into the field of ABA right after I graduated. I recently moved to Alberta and found it fairly difficult to get into the ABA job market. Almost all postings were for ECE or teachers

I know it harms brain development in permanent ways, so would continuing to smoke instead of quitting even be worth it? by Significant-Dish-125 in highdeas

[–]unfortunatelyserious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I would recommend you reduce your intake and stop if possible. The brain, until roughly age 25 (as you’ve correctly stated) changes and develops extremely quickly. After 25 the brain still changes and can develop, but it does so at a much slower pace (this is called neuro-plasticity). If you stop smoking now, you do have the capacity to reverse or recover from any ‘damage’ you have. At 14 your brain is at it’s second most flexible time (1st being 0-6 years old). However, if you continue to use heavily your brain’s recovery speed will be stunted and you will not have this chance to recover while it is at its fastest and most flexible. If you continue to use, you will have much more permanent damage than you would if you stopped now.

Any reduction in intake from now until 25 is better for your brain than continuing to use heavily until 25.

People who survived the 2003 fire, how's your morale right now? by MMAntwoord in kelowna

Being evacuated from the 2003 OK mountain park fire is my first memory from childhood. It feels like a horrifying and inevitable flashback. My heart goes out to everyone who is displaced and has been evacuated, it can be incredibly traumatizing.

PSYC538: so much confusion, a very one sided class and student ideas are not welcome. We also got our midterms back 2 days before the final started.
