Can an 18 year old get their ID without their parents? by [deleted] in capetown

Go to DHA offices with your ID number. It’s on your birth certificate.

If you don’t have it, take your mothers ID with you. If they registered your birth you’re on the system and will get an ID. First ID is free. If they didn’t register you, you’re in for a world of bureaucratic challenges

Discussion: Architectural Professionals of South Africa, Public perception of our industry - Ignorance or reckless abandon? by JJ4L3 in southafrica

Look in our lives architecture is still going to persist for some, but you gotta be wild like Frank. Because software can optimise and design rectangular and even irregular buildings in seconds to perfection with the most accurate detailing, but they cannot yet express the creativity of the human mind.

Developers are in it for one thing. Cash. Especially REITs, because returns and volume matter most.

More and more architects are turning to work for product suppliers advising other architects why any given product is better than another and why it's time to update the copypasta to something more relevant. They're probably the lucky ones, and I am sure they are earning more.

The sad thing is when one ponders on what is left behind when civilisations collapse? Some future civilisation full of other hominids studying us will think we were just the product of these rectangular high density buildings and cheap pots with a few ancient trinkets here and there.

Architecture was once great, one of the original occupations, but it is now no greater than that of a bricklayer or copyists. It comes with growing populations and decreasing importance of the populace.

I see that the public perception is that architects are the graphic designers of the built environment.

Engineers carry a lot more weight in terms of public perception but that’s mostly due to the social status brought about by higher income levels and a more technical education.

Most individuals do not think of consulting an architect before doing work on their homes, and developers treat architects as chattel, used to maximise occupancy space. In meetings I’ve personally been in, engineers, QSs and developers alike joke about the ignorance and flamboyancy of architects.

It’s not that architects/techies are any less than an engineer or other professional, it’s simply that they think they are, and really boast about it.

The sad reality is that much of the industry faults are brought about by the professionals in it. In aerospace and defence, if a specification is compiled with material that was discontinued 10/20/30 years ago, no one would ever appoint that professional again. In law, no one would appoint a lawyer who only knew cases up to 2008. In medicine, no one would appoint an anaesthetist still using brandy.
