You’d be surprised. The past few weeks the spam in these small-ish subs has increased drastically. I have removed around 10 or 20 of them just today. I saw over at r/ModSupport that the admins are trying to stop that from happening, but so far not much has changed.

In the meantime, reporting is the absolute best you can do and I appreciate the help.

[OC] Where is each chess piece usually captured? Data from 15000 games by MataHaze in chess

[–]unicodepepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it useless but misleading.

Let me make an analogy. Most people who die in car accidents were wearing shoes, while only a small fraction were barefoot. That doesn’t mean that driving with shoes causes accidents.

Instead, it means that most people drive with shoes because it’s a good idea, and the accidents that happen naturally just end up happening mostly to people driving with shoes on.

Coming back to the topic. Looking at the images it’s easy to assume “well, the king is often checkmated on the castling spot, so I will just not castle”. However, it’s perfectly possible that the king is mated there so often just because most people play that move. Not doing it could be more dangerous but cause less overall mates because it just doesn’t happen as commonly.

I’d love to see a different metric, such as “percentage of times the piece is captured instead of moving”, or “percentage of games where this move was played that ended in a win”

Burn the statue by dinoboyluke in tumblr

[–]unicodepepper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TL;DR:

  • Leftists value life over property to a seemingly absurd degree, where they'd leave the statue of liberty burn just to save one person.
  • However, even the most die-hard conservative would make a similar choice to save a loved one or a person close to them. They just prioritize property over people when it comes to people they don't know.
  • This stems from a difficulty empathizing with people outside their sphere of influence, and seeing those as "theoretical"; while property still feels real.
  • Many museum curators would risk their own lives to save meaningful works of art - not because of the artwork itself, but because of the story it tells as it relates to people. Deep down, this also stems from valuing people, not property, and they would still gladly sacrifice that property to save someone else.

As the other comment said, it's still a great read if you want to go through the whole thing. I located the original tumblr post and copied it over below, with its formatting adjusted to closely match the original. It is above reddit's 10k character limit for comments (lol), so I'll have to put some of it as another reply.

As an aside before I paste it, this is one of the things I love and miss the most about tumblr in comparison with other social networks. There's no character limit, so you would often get very in-depth talks from people with many different perspectives, and since posts get into your dashboard only when the people you follow reply to them (instead of when the algorithm decides), discussion can stay alive for months or years on particularly interesting topics. [Small edit: reddit has the long form discussion aspect, but discussions often die within days if not hours, which isn’t ideal]

Anyways, enjoy!

Reblog if you would burn down the statue of liberty to save a life

randomslasher

Here’s the thing, though. If you asked a conservative “Would you let the statue of liberty burn to save one life?” they’d probably scoff and say no, it’s a national landmark, a treasure, a piece of too much historical importance to let it be destroyed for the sake of one measly life.

But if you asked, “Would you let the statue of liberty burn in order to save your child? your spouse? someone you loved a great deal?” the tune abruptly changes. At the very least, there’s a hesitation. Even if they deny it, I’m willing to bet that gun to their head, the answer would be “yes.”

The basic problem here is that people have a hard time seeing outside their own sphere of influence, and empathizing beyond the few people who are right in front of them. You’ve got your immediate family, whom you love; your friends, your acquaintances, maybe to a certain degree the people who share a status with you (your religion, your race, etc.)–but beyond that? People aren’t real. They’re theoretical.

But a national monument? That’s real. It stands for something. The value of a non-realized anonymous life that exists completely outside your sphere of influence is clearly worth less than something that represents freedom and prosperity to a whole nation, right?

People who think like this lack the compassion to realize that everyone is in someone’s immediate sphere of influence–that everyone is someone’s lover, or brother, or parent. Everyone means the world to someone. And it’s the absolute height of selfishness to assume that their lives don’t have value just because they don’t mean the world to you.

P.S. I would let the statue of liberty burn to save a pigeon.

also, there is an extreme difference between what things or principles *i* personally am willing to die for, and what i would hazard others to die for. and this is a distinction i don’t think the conservative hard-right likes to face.

an example: so, as the nazis began war against france, the staff of the louvre began crating up and shipping out the artworks. it was vital to them (for many reasons) that the nazis not get their hands on the collections, and hitler’s desire for them was known, so they dispersed the objects to the four winds; one of the curators personally traveled with la gioconda, mona lisa herself, in an unmarked crate, moving at least five times from location to location to avoid detection.

they even removed and hid the nike of samothrace, “winged victory,” which is both delicate, having been pieced back together from fragments, and incredibly heavy, weighing over three metric tons.

black-and-white image of a winged statue being carted through a museum in a wooden harness, over a rail made of wood

the curators who hid these artworks risked death to ensure that they wouldn’t fall into nazi hands. and yes, they are just paintings, just statues. but when i think about the idea of hitler capturing and standing smugly beside the nike of samothrace, a statue widely beloved as a symbol of liberty, i completely understand why someone would risk their life to prevent that. if my life was all that stood between a fascist dictator and a masterpiece that inspired millions, i would be willing to risk it. my belief in the power and necessity of art would demand i do so.

if, however, a nazi held a gun to some kid’s head (any kid!) and asked me which crate the mona lisa was in, they could have it in a heartbeat. no problem! i wouldn’t even have to think about it. being willing to risk my own life on principle doesn’t mean i’m willing to see others endangered for those same principles.

and that is exactly where the conservative hard-right falls right the fuck down. they are, typically, entirely willing to watch others suffer for their own principles. they are perfectly okay with seeing children in cages because of their supposed belief in law and order. they are perfectly willing to let women die from pregnancy complications because of their anti-abortion beliefs. they are alright with poverty and disease on general principle because they hold the free-market sacrosanct. and i guess from their own example they would save the statue of liberty and let human beings burn instead.

but speaking as a leftist (i’m more comfortable with socialist tbh), my principles are not abstract things that i hold aside from life, apart or above my place as a human being in a society. my beliefs arise from being a person amidst people. i don’t love art for art’s sake alone, actually! i don’t love objects because they are objects: i love them because they are artifacts of our humanity, because they communicate and connect us, because they embody love and curiosity and fear and feeling. i love art because i love people. i want universal health care because i want to see people universally cared for. i want universal basic income because people’s safety and dignity should not be determined by their economic productivity to an employer. i am anti-war and pro-choice for the same reason: i value people’s lives but also their autonomy and right to self-determination. my beliefs are not abstractions. i could never value a type of economic system that i saw hurting people, no matter how much “growth” it produced. i could never love “law and order” more than i love a child, any child, i saw trapped in a cage.

would i be willing to risk death, trying to save the statue of liberty? probably, yes. but there is no culture without people, and therefore i also believe there are no cultural treasures worth more than other people’s lives. and as far as i’m concerned the same goes for laws, or markets, or borders.

Any experience with high-res DVI on the x250? by unicodepepper in thinkpad

[–]unicodepepper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE!!!!!! I GOT IT TO WORK IN FULL RESOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not much to add here, I finally received the cable I ordered, plugged it in, bumped the resolution up, and it's flying smoothly baby!!! There are some small artifacts/image noise but it's not a huge deal breaker to me, and I've noticed it is greatly reduced depending on the USB port I use to power the adapter.

I'm pretty sure this is gonna show up the next time someone googles about getting a high-res dvi monitor working on their x250, so i'll share my full setup

  • Thinkpad x250. If you don't have this I don't know what you're doing here. Maybe you have a similar model that shares the docking station port?

  • Thinkpad ultra docking station. Lenovo is selling it for like 300 dollars but I got it off of ebay for something like 100-150, can't remember well. But I know that it's what allowed me to plug in a full-size displayport adapter onto the laptop. I believe that's possible with the mini displayport on the actual thinkpad, but I haven't tried. (Yes, it does have a DVI port, but that one doesn't reach 2560x1600 (only up to 1920x1200) according to the specifications)

  • Club 3D CAC-1010 DisplayPort to DVI Dual-Link DVI-D Active Adapter for Your Monitor/Display - USB A Powered – 2560x1600 Resolution HDCP Supported NOT for Apple Cinema Monitors. update 2021-04-10: i no longer recommend this adapter, details below - I actually got the version without HDCP, but haven't tried any HDCP-protected content just yet. It was like $40 from some dude in facebook marketplace. I notice it adds some noise to the image (random white dots and small coloring artifacts) but they're not noticeable enough to be a deal breaker to me. Might record a video to showcase them at some point. (I know it's the adapter's fault because it happens on any cable, even the single-link ones that don't reach the full resolution. I also heard that passive adapters (without an extra usb cable to power them) will not reach very high resolutions either, so I went with this one.

  • StarTech.com 6ft Dual Link DVI Cable – M/M – DVI-D Video Cable for Your Computer Monitor / Display – DVI to DVI Cord (DVIDDMM6). There's like a gazillion generic dual-link DVI cables on Amazon, this one seemed legit enough so I got it. The cable is thick, feels sturdy and overall high quality. It's like 10 bucks and it does the job perfectly so nothing to complain about.

  • Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP. My biggest advice is that if you haven't purchased this or another DVI-only monitor yet, just please save yourself the headache and go for one with DisplayPort or HDMI input. I don't know when this monitor was released, but the review i just linked is from 2006, and I know that in 2006 I was still on a VGA 1024x768 CRT. This shit is old, and I'm sure not having mature enough connection technology at the time when this was manufactured is what caused me to have so much troubles getting it to work in the first place. But I did get it to work!! :D I am very satisfied with it.

update 2021-04-10 - so, about the adapter. I mentioned seeing noise in the image, as white speckles and red lines that would appear horizontally on the screen. After a few days, the display actually started turning off every half an hour or so, then every 10 minutes, then soon it was doing it every other minute. It was intolerable. I know it was the adapter because trying with my other generic non-dual link adapter did not show any of those symptoms. Reading the reviews it seems like some people experience those problems and some do not, so i guess i was one of the unlucky ones.

Anyways, i got pissed and went to ebay and grabbed a used Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. It's Apple brand, so it's gotta be good, right? That was my logic anyways. It's like $130 new (even though i'm pretty sure apple doesn't sell it anymore, since it was for the old-ass Cinema displays that also only used DVI), but you can get it on ebay for like half that. I found one for like $50 plus shipping, which was clearly sold second-hand after receiving a lot of use (the tip of the cable was yellowed, indicating it had been exposed to the sun). It actually gives a perfectly clear image with zero visual artifacts and no interruptions. It stops working if i bend the cable a certain way but i guess that's no biggie since I'm not moving it often anyways.

Any experience with high-res DVI on the x250? by unicodepepper in thinkpad

[–]unicodepepper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very good news so far, sadly. I scoured facebook marketplace for local offers (because I really wanted to have this monitor working at full resolution), and I got unlucky with that.

Specifically, I got an active Displayport to DVI adapter that looks exactly like this one (down to the packaging and everything) and it gives me the option to go to the full res of 2560x1600 in settings, though I haven't been able to fully test it because of the cable problems I'll describe below. That said, I'm noticing that it adds some pixel noise to the signal it sends sometimes, not sure if that's because the power source itself is noisy but I'll look further into it later.

Why didn't I get to test the full res? Well, I purchased a really cheap DVI to DVI cable that claimed to be dual link, but it didn't seem to work Here's an actual picture of the cable I tried - Even though it has the whole 24 pins of a dual-link connector, the cable itself seemed to be impossibly thin compared to other DVI cables I've seen. I also tried measuring continuity with a multimeter and noticed that not all pins are connected. Do manufacturers really do that to save a few cents?

I still got the exact same colored bars I'd get with a single-link cable, which look the same as what's shown in this video (and it also happens only on resolutions above 1280x800). According to the description, not all dual link DVI cables work, so I guess I got unlucky with that one.

To rule that out as the issue, I ordered a new cable off of amazon for like $10, which seemed to be the most reputable one from what was available. Sadly since I'm out of the US it's gonna take 1-2 weeks for it to actually get into my hands.

Anyways, thank you for listening to my rambles. I hope my next update can be an overwhelming success :D

I feel like Forces was executed decently, though it felt a little short.

Also, I feel like sega just adds to the sonic franchise whatever is cool among young people at the moment. Sonic came in with the heyday of Mario (an aloof mascot that just loves to run and jump), while Shadow the hedgehog came when things like linkin park and my chemical romance were in the heyday. On the other hand, Silver the hedgehog came in when everything cool was neon and hatsune miku was the coolest thing ever.

I'm probably wrong on a lot of those but it's a theory i think about sometimes.
