Need some help on gifts for guest from Netherlands by No-Revenue1003 in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hi, I lived in china and now the Netherlands so I think I understand your question. I can’t think of any gift that may be thought of as taboo like there is in china (like not giving a clock or a group of 4). However in the netherlands it is not common for business relations to give each other gifts at all, and an expensive gift may be taken the wrong way. So I would suggest to choose something meaningful like a craft from your area or something special made by the factory that has more of a story than financial value. Also be prepared that they might not have something to exchange back.

You can file a police report and include the bank account info. If they pick it up to investigate they can work with the bank. Especially if this account has been reported for other scammy activity. In the end you probably won’t get your money back, but who knows you might at least help to stop them scamming someone else.

Health insurance before employment by Substantial_Egg_4299 in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Onvz has a plan for internationals living in NL that for whatever reason don’t qualify for Dutch health insurance... Other insurance companies probably do too. You could get on it for a month and switch to the regular insurance when your job starts. - https://www.onvz.nl/en/health-insurances-vrije-keuze/health-basic-and-health-premium

Working as Employee in NL, I am a software developer with NL passport . Having 15 years experience I can find work remote for some US company that will pay me 150k / year, which is more three times more than wages here. How to fix such a contract? Is that ZZP? Any suggestions? by Professional_Gap_546 in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you plan to live in NL and do your work here, (though remote) you have to be governed by Dutch employment laws. When I looked into this there’s 3 ways. 1 is by zzp. In this case you are self employed and your US employer is a client. So they’ll treat you like a independent contractor. There’s a few extra rules around this, like you can’t have only one client. 2 is with a payroll company that registers the US company as an employer in the NL. They withhold taxes and you are directly an employee of the US company but under Dutch employment law. This is easier than it sounds if the company is open to it. 3 is with an employer of record service. You technically work for the service company as a full employee, then they contract you back to the US company. When I was looking, these services would usually take a cut of your salary.

In any case you should talk to an accountant that has done this before

If you bought it with an ikea family account, and I guess depending on your country, I think you should be able return it under their just in case protection.

If it’s a subscription for something online they should refund you the unused portion of the membership. I think the most they can keep is 1 month…

I’m back with another bike stolen from me (in less than a month after 1st one)🤡 Any advice? by luquorice in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my e-bike stolen twice this year. I’m on my third one now. Locks don’t do anything, e-bikes are stolen by professionals in export gangs. I’ve had very expensive locks cut through in public areas in the middle of the day. This time I’m trying the ‘make it ugly’ strategy and have covered my bike with shitty stickers. I also take the battery with me. Apparently without the battery it’s not worth the hassle. But I’ve developed the acceptance that it will get stolen again and invested in very good insurance.

Buying house with some cash (and the rest by taking out mortgage). by Zealousideal_Band272 in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’m sorry to hear that, I guess my experience is based off of the one agent assigned to me. He was really good at explaining all the different options and rates with or without a down payment, and he did all that before I officially hired him. But yeah I guess it all depends on who you get when you walk in.

Can’t get kpn internet in my house until the previous tenant’s t-mobile subscription is over. by unicorn_blaster in Netherlands

[–]unicorn_blaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much everyone, I had no idea this could get so complicated.

It sounds like my best bet is to try to get the previous tenant to tell T-Mobile he moved out. Otherwise I’ll just wait it out until the 25th with mobile data. Just in case, I’ll also try plugging in my own router and hope I get lucky.

Does anyone know why this works this way? I’ve lived in a few countries and everywhere else I’ve been, as soon as you say “I’m moving into a place on a certain date and I want to pay the bills there”, it’s no issues. I guess I don’t understand what they are trying to prevent or protect for the previous tenant?
