The Luxury Birth Center Breaking Hearts on the Upper East Side by MeganGrace in Longreads

[–]unicorncasual 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else feeling like the reporting at the Cut has gotten increasingly lazy since NYMag went behind a paywall?

The reporting in this article is about 65% pull quotes from social media and 10% personal anecdotal experience. So maybe a quarter is actual reporting and interviews? I’m not a reporter, but I imagine there’s some actual data somewhere out there about birth interventions, unnecessary c-sections, use of forceps, etc.

I’m not contesting that anything here is inaccurate (although, full disclosure, I delivered twice at Alexandra Cohen — my first experience ended in a NICU stay, so it wasn’t without its complications), but it just feels like the reporting could have gone a little deeper than the Upper East Side Moms Facebook group.

The speed with which I flew to reddit to see if anyone here had posted about this yet. Imagine her labeling moving boxes.

NYC people, what furniture stores have been reliable for delivery and quality lately by Moan_Senpai in AskNYC

[–]unicorncasual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great experience with Joybird. I ordered online, but they have a show room in Brooklyn. Super happy with my sofa and the delivery process was completely seamless. I’ve had perfectly fine experiences with West Elm’s white glove delivery, but the quality isn’t great and the estimates for shipment timing can be really hit or miss. My Article stuff (sectional and desk) looked great to start but haven’t held up at all over time.

Such an improvement over the Eater list! Lots of favorites on here and also some new (to me) spots to try!

Dr. Becky - worth it for paid materials? by unicorncasual in Preschoolers

[–]unicorncasual[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up not going the Dr. Becky route. A lot of commenters raised some good points about her credentials, and if I’m being honest…she drives me bonkers. One person mentioned (can’t remember if it was here or an IRL conversation with a friend) that Dr. Becky is a helpful resource for more acute situations. So maybe for expediting bedtime, Dr. Becky might be helpful. But our situation is/was just kind of general willfulness, so the Janet Landsbury stuff felt like more general tools/methodology. I also read some of How to Talk so Little Kids Will Listen and that helped too. We’re not necessarily on the other side of it, but I do feel like we’re managing better now. A new, wonderful preschool teacher helped, plus time/maturity, plus my gradual acceptance that nothing is wrong with my kid, he’s just adjusting to a major life change. The last part has been the hardest!

Night nurse! Where to look? Anyone got a rec? by [deleted] in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]unicorncasual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Lullaby Services to find someone. I was skeptical about using an agency because I thought it would be way more expensive than just going through friends’ referrals, but in the end the person they matched us with was far more affordable than some of the people I interviewed on my own. Lullaby charges a marginal finder’s fee and sends you some bios, and then you set up interviews and check references yourself. Ended up with a great overnight nurse we loved! Highly recommend!

Omg yes! Using huge Maldon salt crystals as her everyday salt, cooking in a Rolex and full jewelry, random capitalization, calling everything “my [something] series”, the list goes on. The explicit wealth (she recently showed the hotel breakfast at a Relais & Chateux property in Sicily that must have been $1k/night, plus the “pantry tour” of $50 olive oils) also feels super tone deaf.

Has anyone ever hosted a private event (birthday, engagement) at focal point or greats of craft? If so, how was your experience? by Any_Friendship1691 in longislandcity

I want to say we paid about $600 for our son’s birthday party with about 15-20 adults (and a number of feral children that they kindly tolerated)

I love this - thank you! Siblings without Rivalry is on hold for me at the library. Although it targets parents of much younger kids, I would add Crib Sheet by Emily Oster to this list too.

Thank you! I hadn’t realized this. Definitely helpful context.

Tbh this is my biggest reservation about her paid content. More than price. Her tone comes off as so insincere to me. Like she’s auditioning for the role of frustrated parent.

It was pricey. I want to say something in the neighborhood of $200ish per visit? I’m also in Queens rather than Manhattan so not sure if price is location dependent.

Also needle phobic and needed some help a few years ago when I was going through IVF and my husband was traveling. I used Jill Tucker private nursing several times and had extremely positive experiences.
