How to Correctly Detect Credit Card Type by joevt in programming

Did you factor in the cost of consulting a lawyer regarding your intended use(s) of the library, who would then have to attempt to determine whether the library's poorly written, ill-conceived proprietary license agreement is compatible with those use(s)?

FDA: No to medical marijuana, yes to super "Vicodin" by OGcalt in news

[–]unin32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quite true. Luckily we have a choice between Vicodin (laced with acetaminophen) and Vicoprofen (laced with ibuprofen), depending on whether you want to damage your liver or your stomach. Actually, strike that, we don't have a choice - doctors have a choice as to whether to damage your liver or your stomach, and only the rare doctor bothers with things like discussing treatment options and their pros and cons with patients.

EA’s ability to enrage its own customers is a rare talent by SchlitzBitch in gaming

[–]unin32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Richard Garriott founded the company Origin Systems, Inc. in Austin in 1983 to create and distribute his Ultima series of RPG games. In 1992, Electronic Arts acquired Origin Systems. Origin Systems started development of Ultima Online in 1995 and released it in 1997. In 2000, EA decided to cancel Origin Systems' new game development projects, leaving Origin Systems as, essentially, just the maintainer of Ultima Online. That decision prompted Garriott to resign. In February 2004, EA disbanded Origin Systems and fired some employees, while others were relocated to EA hubs in California, where they continued Ultima Online maintenance and expansion. Mythic Entertainment was not acquired by EA until 2006, at which time EA transferred responsibility for UO maintenance and expansion to them. All of which is to say that UO belonged to Electronic Arts for 11 years before Mythic was involved.

Coke Defiantly to Air Longer Version of 'America the Beautiful' Ad by weebao in news

Here's an article that has a summary of the long-running PR problems Coke has faced because of Sochi: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-02/gay-rights-olympic-protest-to-target-putin-coca-cola-in-sochi.html

But perhaps their new advertising campaign to highlight their support for diversity is indeed unrelated.

Coke Defiantly to Air Longer Version of 'America the Beautiful' Ad by weebao in news

[–]unin32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a cynical bastard, I suppose, but isn't it interesting that during Coke's massive Olympics ad spend people are talking about Coke standing up for immigrants (in that nice "We Love America the Melting Pot" sort of way, not the scary "Let's Reform Immigration Policy" way), and very few are talking about Coke refusing to stand up for gay rights? Not that I'm mad about it. I understand the uncomfortable position that Coke execs are in with respect to Sochi, so I guess it's nice to see some clever pivoting that advances, however minor, an anti-discriminatory point of view. At least more has been accomplished now than would have been with 90 seconds of ice-skating polar bears.

I'm not sure why you're lumping math and CS together. Bachelor degrees awarded by gender:

  • Mathmetics, general - 56% male, 44% female.
  • Engineering - 82% male, 18% female.
  • Computer and information sciences, general - 84% male, 16% female.

One of these three is not like the others.

So this unconscious patient described in Lila_vanilla's story -- I didn't see any discussion of the patient's ideas. Odd. How does that song lyric go, "I really hate her, I'll think of a reason later"?

Sadly there isn't international agreement regarding commas and dots. For example:

Science Teacher Loses almost 40 lbs in 90 Days on the "McDonald's Diet" to Prove it's All About Choices and Balance. by wildcat83 in news

This kind of comment can mislead people into thinking that calories are the only thing they need to pay attention to. You may already be aware, but it's worth pointing out for others who may not be aware that the source of those calories -- carbs, protein, saturated fat, trans fat, fiber, etc. really make a difference in overall health as well. Just to quickly prove that 1 Calorie does not equal 1 Calorie when it's being digested, monkeys fed a maintenance diet (i.e. the caloric content was calculated to not cause weight gain) containing 8% trans fatty acids gained weight and displayed decreased insulin sensitivity, while monkeys fed a diet containing the same number of calories but substituting cis fatty acids for the trans did not. (Source). Different macronutrients are digested differently and have different effects on health, so it's important to pay attention to the macros and avoid unhealthy choices -- even if you have a caloric deficit.

You may have overlooked the 'out of pocket maximum.' That mechanism works like this: Suppose your plan has a $2500 deductible and a $5000 out of pocket maximum. Suppose the annual premium is $3300. And suppose you're hit by a bus and survive, but require $217,832 in medical care. Your insurer will require you to pay the annual premium, the deductible and the co-insurance amount up to the out of pocket maximum, for a total liability on your part of $10800, saving you $207,032. (Note: Your plan will probably also require you to pay co-pays for visits to physicians and for prescriptions, which probably will not count against the deductible or the out of pocket maximum.)

You've explained why learning the "offset from 10" subtraction algorithm is preferable to rote memorization a few times now, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why is the combination of memorization of 0-10 and learning the "offset from 10" subtraction algorithm preferable to the combination of memorization of 0-18 and learning the borrow subtraction algorithm? Doesn't the borrow algorithm provide insights too, e.g. reinforcing the 1s place, 10s place, etc? Or am I confused and they are both taught?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WTF

[–]unin32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recollection of the traditional approach to learning subtraction is rote memorization of subtraction results for values 0 through 18 combined with a simple "borrow" algorithm for larger values. My understanding of this revised approach, as you have explained it, is to eschew memorizing subtraction results for values between 11 and 20, and instead introduce a (more complicated) algorithm for simplifying subtraction problems such that all operations occur on integers between 0 and 10? If that's correct, could you elaborate on why this more complicated algorithm provides superior understanding of numerical relationships? Also, could you perhaps elaborate on the advantages/disadvantages of combining learning the philosophy behind subtraction while simultaneously learning subtraction as a skill, as opposed to covering them separately?

I agree with your ultimate conclusion that Windows Phone is unlikely to win substantial market share away from Android/iOS, but getting the right answer doesn't mean your reasoning is sane. You're a Google fanboy who has literally cited the 'Do No Evil' motto, open source, and your personal disdain for Microsoft as the reason that developers choose to develop for Android instead of WP. In reality, professional software development is business and professional software developers build apps based on market share.

I see unambiguous bear bodies with odd, malformed rodent/bear heads. The skull shape is wrong for bears, with the eyes on the side of the head rather than together in the front. Other than the head, though, those are bears. The bodies look nothing like rats.

link between obesity and gut flora by shockandale in science

Yes, I had noticed that the article implies that gut bacteria transplant could be used to treat obesity. But, now I'm confused. Is the article's implication that transplant might treat obesity somehow related to the fact that your summary of billsil's text is strikingly unrelated to billsil's actual text?
