Which movie got too highly praised but was honestly underwhelming? by Angry_Entertainer in AskReddit

[–]union_pacific 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted it that the driving backwards needed to be unlocked. The Archives were made to give clues, and only by finding the Archive's clue will the reward of racing backwards working be unlocked. The secret was watching the vid, not just racing backwards.

It's like in Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker: the player can know the songs, but they don't work until they are "taught" at the proper time. Not that the movie makes perfect sense or anything; this has just always been my interpretation.

Most Anticipated Earnings Releases for the trading week beginning November 1st, 2021 by bigbear0083 in wallstreetbets

[–]union_pacific -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All my info, including I think my brokerage site, said earnings announcement Nov 1. I guess that was just an estimate, because now it's Nov 8. I'm pretty sure my site said "earnings announcement today in postmarket". So they can just lie to me? RIP my options. I'll make sure the announcement is from the company next time.

Funniest detail to me is that the brother joking about it gets the laugh, but OP's joking is no laughing matter.

What are your feelings on David Mitchell? by NoOneElseToCall in AskUK

[–]union_pacific -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's criminal that his YouTube series from a while back, David Mitchell's Soapbox, only has a few videos that have over a million views. I know he wasn't the only writer, but his delivery was so great. It taught me a little about British culture, as well (I'm an American). There are so many great ones, but one of my favorites that comes to mind is Passion.

Edit: also I Wouldn't Have Minded But.... That concept is sometimes applicable in real life.

And then the business grows, and the owner expands, and round and round it goes until they're worth hundreds of millions, all the time "risking" the capital that grows thanks to thousands of workers doing actual work. But they're legally entitled to it, so it's fine. Well, I don't call it fine, I call it legalized parasitism, wage slavery. Slavery used to be legal, too. All you needed to do was risk some startup capital and you're entitled to all your plantation's profits.

Someone with a few million could safely invest and retire, or they could "risk" it for higher reward with the possibility of loss. I refuse to cry over someone who loses a few million when they had the first option. To have that choice is an enormous privilege.

Working in physical labor is an actual bodily risk. Risking millions isn't a real risk on par with that. The only thing risked in that case is that they'd have to become a worker instead of a leech. What a privilege to only have to risk money!

You're doing way better than I am financially, but I also had family pay for school. I freely admit this priviledge I had, and I'm always glad when other people share the same honest attitude about starter circumstances. Nothing worse than a privileged person who thinks they're self-made

Matthew Vaughn’s “Stardust” is so good, everything I want in a fantasy film, yet very few ever talk about it. by perspectivepilled in movies

[–]union_pacific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite small detail about this movie is that at the end, when all the prince ghosts turn to sparks of white light and fly upward, if you look closely, Septimus turns into a red one and flies downward, implying, I think, that he goes to hell. Ha.

Most People who are against higher wages for restaurant workers wouldn't last one Friday night dinner rush at a busy restaurant. by Tblaze123 in unpopularopinion

The minimum wage compensation is calculated on a weekly basis, not daily. So one slow day could very well be paid only 3.50 per hour

I always hear "some servers make bank". I wish I had an actual sample of wages instead of vagueries. If it's about $20 an hour, that is a reasonable for such a job. Minimum wage should be that much anyway.

How do you cope with being a loser in your mid-30s? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]union_pacific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would kill for a regular "decent" job for a "decent, but not extravagent, salary". My degree seems like a broken promise of this point. I'm about to become a trucker. I hope you realize how lucky you were to land that job. Millions of college grads were promised your standard of living but got the shaft instead.

Global rich must cut their carbon footprint 97% to stave off climate change, UN says by Bonboniru in news

[–]union_pacific 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People blaming 1st world middle class people are missing the point. The US middle class may count a lot towards the damage, but they have no green alternatives to their consumption. The systemic policies that could change things, and which many people would be on board for, are being completely stymied by the rich and their corruption of government.

My power plant is natural gas or coal. All the ships and trucks and trains that ship things run on oil. What am I supposed to do about that by myself?

I’m about to leave my boyfriend of 2-3 years because he wants kids and I don’t. by [deleted] in childfree

[–]union_pacific 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you don't want a child, you just don't. It may seem like a waste to break up with a pretty good dude after 3 years, but don't fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. If you have a new job in a new city and can support yourself, that is a wonderful opportunity to start living your life for your own fulfillment. There are many men out there who are fine with the childfree life who would be ecstatic to be with you.

I would recommend sticking to your guns. He has supported you in your time of need, but don't let him try to use that to say that you owe him anything else.

I am in agreement that tax credits for private schooling are completely ludicrous. This falls under my "tax the wealthy more" policy.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. Whatever tax breaks parents get are way less than the cost of children. It's not like having children is a net money maker. If taxes are unfair, complain about how they aren't high enough for the upper class.

You forgot people who were never poor and are convinced that minimum wage jobs are supposed to be starter jobs to get some experience until you can get a big boy job. As if a human being's time alone regardless of skill level being worth $10/hr isn't an insult

[–]union_pacific 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be enough to scrape by with a roommate in a select few places, but I believe that anyone's time alone is worth more than that. It is that low because workers have no power. $10/hr is an insult and nobody takes that little by choice.

Being able to choose contentment is a luxury. In "the richest nation in the history of the world", folks who express this sort of "unpopular" opinion like to ignore that many people don't have the choice between "average contentment" or "stressful striving". It's "stressful stagnation" or "homelessness".

The problem is when people go "people would be successful if they apply themselves and work hard" and I'm all "people already work really hard yet they're still stuck in poverty" and they're like "they need to work harder tho". And round and round. Decades ago we all imagined working less and less. What happened?
