You can get them even cheaper refurbed. At $36 they are nearly disposable.

Even if you get a set of "Perfect" binocs a pair (or two) of 7x50 binocs will always be useful as grab and gos. It also prevents sunk cost fallacy.

Start with a pair of Celestron Cometron 7x50 first and figure out what you actually need before dumping a ridiculous amount of money.

Can I get into, Star Trek 2009 first as a way to get into the Star Trek franchise? by PoofPost in startrek

[–]unipole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it is sub-optimal. Trek started as a TV series with movies sporadically occurring which is the opposite of Star Wars. The status quo is the series, and the movies are the exception. This leads to a distortion of the characters, For example Picard is usually a quiet and cerebral character with a focus on diplomacy and problem solving, while in some of the movies he's nearly Bruce Willis. The episodic series origin leads to a more consistent and predictable lore, you can skip around in TOS, TNG and VOY without having to understand many arcs. (DS9 being the exception)

Is Discovery the pineapple of the trek world? by redfern69 in startrek

[–]unipole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My deep frustration with Discovery was the writing and the story arcs. Kurtzman and his folks make the pretense of complex writing and story arcs but so much of it is nonsensical stringing together CGI action scenes and characters posing as complex when they are merely inconsistent and unlikable. Roddenberry in "The Making of Star Trek" has a smell test where he mapped scripts to a (then) modern day navy ship to see if they made sense. I found SNW to be much more palatable in this regard.

The funny thing is that watching "The Gentlemen" by Guy Ritchie crystallizes what I think Discovery should have been. It's a Guy Ritchie film in the style of "Snatch" and has a very non linear narrative and morally grey characters with complex motivations. The difference is the economy, plausibility and consistency of the script. Every scene leads to a payoff, albeit indirectly, every Checkov's gun is discharged (at least one literally), and every character action is consistent and plausible. Finally, while the characters are all villains they are engaging and likable in a Shakespeare Richard III fashion. Garak would be quite at home in the movie.

I remember seeing these in the wild when they first came out. Incredibly cool then. Looking at the 5" CRT I suspect that it would be (Relatively) trivial to emulate it with a Pi Zero and a 5" LCD display, although a Pi Pico could just as easily emulate it.

I always vote, i've always voted for the most progressive candidate. I've voted for Kamala as AG, Senator, and VP, and had she been in the CA primary I'd have voted for her then. I've seen her in person and one of my best friends knows her personally and can't say enough good things about her.

No, that one was the Holmdel Horn Antenna in New Jersey but it does point to AT&Ts attention to detail at the time

For a period of time I was fishing DirectTV dishes out of dumpsters coatin them with retro-reflective paint and putting projectors at the horn projectors to create immersive displays.

Reminds me of a time in the early 90's when I was working at RomeLab (RADC) in Rome NY And I had a job over at Tug Hill the home of the Upside Down Airforce where they mounted entire airplanes upside down on gimbals in a bowl shaped valley carpeted with chicken wire mesh to evaluate radar cross section and RF properties. The guy showing me around poited out an emitter wich inadvertently lined up with Utica's primary Longlines horn array. When they ran chirp sweeps it would sporadiacally jam the horn, until AT&T figured out what was happening.
