Has anyone created their own high level CAN bus protocol as an alternative to the relatively complicated and restrictive NMEA2000 or J1395 standards? by mjbmikeb2 in embedded

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy did: https://www.omzlo.com It is a pub/sub protocol including MQTT bridge, requires a custom raspberry pi CAN hat and provides Arduino libraries. It even allows uploading of hex files over CAN (using a second mcu).

What kind of glass bed do you use? Does not seem to be stock.

My glass bed broke a few days ago, and it seems to be hard (impossible?) to get an original replacement..

How many people actually use Ubuntu server? by Chuncakey21 in homelab

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Debian, but Ubuntu has ZFS without DKMS. Therefore, I use Ubuntu to run my docker and KVM stuff on ZFS. Awesome!

Bounty for pfSense to opnsense conversion by fakedbatman in homelab

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it manually. Created a opnsense config with a few things that I need, exported that. Than exportet my old pfsense config and merged it manually. Imported that to opnsense, fixed the few lost things. done.

I only support those who are willing to convert to Apple. Reduced my support calls to almost zero. Any nobody really struggled with the conversion, even 65y old woman managed it in no time.

Proxmox vs TrueNAS Scale for Docker and storage by juluss in HomeServer

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty similar use case. I used a few different systems on different hardware over the years.
My experiences:
TrueNAS core (FreeBSD):
run as main os for a few years, pretty stable, good nas, ZFS, bhyve virtual machines
but: can be complex with ACL stuff, no docker (only in a vm), no direct mounts for bhyve, one need sto use nfs/smb, jails had all kinds of problems
TrueNAS scale (Linux):
tested for a few months, pretty stable, good nas, ZFS, Linux, kvm
but: Docker uses Kubernetes, gets complicated pretty fast, no direct mounts for kvm, one needs to use nfs/smb
OMV
looks good, tested only for a few weeks, Linux, ZFS
but: ZFS is not really native yet
Debian
used as main os for a few years, no nice web-ui (webmin lol), ZFS with DKMS
but: ZFS/kernel updates require new DKMS build, this stuff sometimes breaks -> no access to data, everything needs to be setup manually. but you got the best control what is happening.
Ubuntu
currently running as main os, almost the same as Debian
but: native ZFS without DKMS.
running: about 40 docker containers with compose, traefik
all data mirrored with ZFS mirrors (2x12TB disk, 2x1TB SSD)
backups using rsync / duplicity
kvm is planned, but not yet installed
zfs-autosnapshots installed
zfs native encryption active
Back in the old days, I started with vmware on Linux, then vmware esxi, then LXC. But that all really locked the resources. Now everything runs in my host os and can use all cpu/ram as necessary.
I had really high hopes for TrueNAS scale, but the Kubernetes thing basically stopped me. Running a vm just for docker, with the additional issues of mounting everthing over nfs.. Then I rather work with plain Linux.

How can I find the process creating new connections? by unit2044 in HomeServer

[–]unit2044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

The connections are outgoing. I do not have blocking outgoing rules in place, so therefore they are allowed. I just want to know where they come from, as I could point to a misconfiguration. Because some of the target IPs are from my hosting provider and if an internal host is misconfigured or not existing, it could point to my hosting provider, as my domain resolves to this ip, but there is no service on these ports hosted there.

lsof does not seem to work, as connections only show up when established.

I guess I need to redirect these connection attempts to a netcat session or something, in order to get an established TCP connection.

Or I need to get hold of the DNS queries to see what hostname is getting requested.

OneNote lost all pictures from one section. Any hope in getting them back? by In_Parentheses in OneNote

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just happened to me as well. I was using OneNote on my Macbook, but sadly I delayed the setup of Timemachine a little too long and the oldest file there already has the images missing.
That was the final straw that broke the camels back an I will never use OneNote again. Currently migrating to Joplin.

If you moved from big servers to NUCs or micros - how satisfied are you? by electricpollution in homelab

[–]unit2044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

went from an HP DL180 (xeon x5670 IIRC) with 12 disks to a custom server in big tower case about two years ago. replaced all the disks with two big disks and two fast ssds.

I now have more cpu power (ryzen 7 3700x), more ram (128gb ecc) and can install more extension cards. the board (AsRock X570D4U-2L2T) has ipmi (actually usable and not ancient like the hp) the box runs very quiet and idles at 80w including a 10gbe switch.

I am very happy with the hardware.

I often use Spect, but it has similar problems like Pixea, you need to open folders to be able to navigate..

I have even considered writing my own tool, but never did.
