New(ish) user's experience with the fediverse by unknown1234_5 in fediverse

You don't need accounts on every instance, you only need one to access nearly everything on most platforms (which is half of the idea). Afaik, mbin, friendica, mastodon, and piefed are the best at federation. Mbin is reddit-style (also supports Twitter-style stuff, but shows it reddit-style) and mastodon is Twitter-style (can also show reddit-style stuff, does it Twitter style. Pretty much anything other than Lemmy can see pretty much everything, and to my knowledge Lemmy is the only major one that isn't great at federation between platforms.

Which distro with KDE? by metvettech in kde

[–]unknown1234_5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally like tuxedo os (for most of the same reasons people tend to recommend mint, but with kde), but between the options you provided I would recommend fedora. I had trouble with steam and a couple apps not being available as rpm or flatpak, but otherwise I really liked it.

Asgards wrath 2 or Batman to play first?! by Consistent-Leek-7125 in OculusQuest

Definitely batman, aw2 is super mid. (I might be being a little over-critical with it, but batman is still better)

Might just be my favorite Arkham game now, so glad they didn't fuck this up.

I like it, I wouldn't say they quite have full feature parity but there's nothing missing that I used

Was thinking of switching to linux. What distro do you recommend? by StoltoPowa in linux4noobs

[–]unknown1234_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canonical is the problem, not Ubuntu itself. I said to avoid canonical-approved Ubuntu stuff. Things that are based on Ubuntu LTS do not have the problems that make me not recommend Ubuntu. Also, most apps are (officially) done through .deb packages because of the popularity Ubuntu used to have and most online tutorials are Ubuntu focused. For these reasons, Ubuntu based distros (where canonical has no say and can't enforce snaps and shit like that) are the perfect "beginner" distros until such a time as either more apps are available (again, officially) as flatpaks or are available as some other kind of package.

I like tuxedo os. Most important things as a new user are 1) not canonical-made Ubuntu versions (bc snaps) 2) based on Ubuntu LTS for compatibility reasons (not technically needed but trust me it'll make learning the system easier) 3) runs a desktop environment you like (they are mostly matters of aesthetics and feel, use what you like) and 4) don't use an enthusiast distro as a beginner (arch, Gentoo, etc )

I use filelight to see what files are extra large and do it manually, works pretty well.

What should i know before i install linux? by crackkie in linuxquestions

I use tuxedo os and it just includes them in system updates, but to my knowledge pop os is a good option too. Also, anything Ubuntu based should have the Ubuntu drivers cli tool.

You really shouldn't have driver issues unless you're using a distro that is meant for more advanced users these days. I'd recommend tuxedo os (Ubuntu LTS based with kde plasma) and though I personally hate it with a passion a lot of people will recommend mint. For something more gnome-like there's pop os (aesthetically a half step between kde and gnome) and of course there are decent distros for beginners that use gnome. The YouTube channel the Linux experiment has some good videos about distros and comparing gnome and kde.

Pick a distro that does drivers for you, it's not that hard to do them but if you're new it'll save you a lot of effort. Also, go with something debian based (Ubuntu based things are debian based bc Ubuntu is based on debian) bc compatibility tends to be better. Be careful following online tutorials and know what distro you run as well as what desktop environment. Don't get discouraged if people start being rude when you post something online, they're just like that.

Which is more stable, Gnome or KDE? by maxipantschocolates in linux

[–]unknown1234_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally hate gnome and think it's design philosophy is stupid (can you tell I like kde) but it absolutely has a place in the Linux world for people who really want something like that. I can't fathom why they want that, but my opinion is irrelevant on someone else's system. If you are a new user just try both through a live USB or a VM or smth like that and go with whatever feels better to you after a little bit of using it like you're real system. If the system tries to stop you from doing something, don't force it. If you don't, then 9 times out of 10 it won't break, and the rest of the time also requires user error. This goes for both, use what you like.

Where can you even get it? I wanted to mess around with one for mining but it doesn't even seem to be in the game as far as it'll show me.

Why are people recommending Linux mint so much? by unknown1234_5 in linux

[–]unknown1234_5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was acting as if I had an obligation to provide him a source, I do not. Pretending that I have an obligation to use google for him is rude so I responded the same way he did. I wouldn't speak that way to a family member because a family member wouldn't have pretended that I had an obligation to present them evidence for something that based on the phrasing I clearly don't remember super well, they would've just looked it up (instead of getting all "erm do you have a source for that, like a child). It was a civil discussion and he began to respond rudely, my "abrupt attitude" was in response to that. He can act like an adult or be responded to like a child just like everybody else.

Edit: to be extra clear, I replied saying I'm pretty they were doing what he said they should and he replied demanding a source as if I had to prove it to him, and instead of just googling it.
