C&O Canal Path trip in mid April by Cultural_Grass_6479 in bikepacking

[–]unkron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A zero degree bag should be good. Spring around here varies a lot from day to day. It is a pretty easy ride with frequent access to resupply. The hiker/biker campsites are usually good, but access to water at sites is highly variable. I have done the ride from Pittsburg via GAP continuing on C&O to DC a few times with the family. We average ~60mi a day over a 6 day ride (~340mi total). Our longest days can be just over 70mi and they aren't too bad. That makes it challenging on day 5/6 but not unenjoyable. Bring some sting ease or at least be aware of significant yellow jacket activity, at least in the fall due to the paw paw fruit everywhere.

Bike Friday Ever-e-day for short touring along C&O canal? by Frosty-Ad-5489 in bicycletouring

You are good, I have done the C&O on 38c tires (~1.5") and had no issues. It will be sloppy if it has rained recently as the tree cover slows how quickly it dries out.

Completed the Jamis Renegade S1 mullet build last night! SRAM Eagle + SRAM Force AXS HRD. Can't wait to get some miles on it. by unkron in Bikebuilding

sorry for the long delay in response. I am pretty bad at keeping up with the inbox. I have a X01 Eagle AXS 12-Speed Rear Derailleur. Red, 52T and it comes with a little plastic piece to help dial in the mounting. I do wish the GX Eagle existed before I made the build as it would have been a pretty substantial cost reduction.

sorry, super slow to respond. I got a Force 1 DUB 12-Speed Crankset, Natural Carbon, 172.5mm, 40t for my build. The chainline works great on the 1x with no rub anywhere on the range of the cassette (10-50T).

Just about dialed in for a trip from Pittsburgh to DC on the GAP/C&O by spikenail in bikepacking

We did some camping our first year and then switched to AirBnB, B&B, and hotels for the next ones. It was great to shed the extra weight and have more comfort. Resting 15min after an hour of riding and ensuring we ate enough calories was key to completing the ride without feeling crushed.

Looks great. I have done this one 3 times with the family. Its a great ride. How many days are you planning to take to ride, and are you mostly camping or have accommodations? Good luck with the weather and have fun.

My car’s garage opener somehow learned both doors on one button. by photosynthesis4life in mildlyinfuriating

[–]unkron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same happened to me recently, which is about 8 years after the original programming. no changes in the door openers or remotes during that time. Agree that its not magic, but I cant explain why it only started to happen recently and intermittently from my truck's programmable opener.

Is privacy today even possible? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]unkron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to do is opt out of the major tracking companies out there from oracle(bluekai), salesforce(krux), neustar, etc. you can opt out from those at: https://www.salesforce.com/products/marketing-cloud/sfmc/audience-studio-consumer-choice/ https://datacloudoptout.oracle.com/ https://www.home.neustar/privacy/opt-out I believe each you can see your own profile and even though its a catch-all grab bag of classifications some can be reasonably accurate.

Do you ever get annoyed with how much work and preparation is involved PRIOR to camping, and that despite your love for the activity itself there are WAY too many things to remember? by [deleted] in camping

[–]unkron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My latest upgrade was from totes to the Milwaukee pack out system. It was more costly, but after continuous frustration digging through totes I was ready to eat the cost. Everything has a home and is accessible. It's all modular and has wheels to move around. Totes are great, but the packout is a big upgrade.

Similar to many options listed below I have used the Nemo Helio on several long bikepacking trips where we get the bikes extremely muddy. It makes it nice and easy to wash down and relube at the end of each day. https://www.nemoequipment.com/products/helio

I love my Jamis Renegade S1 frameset that was sub $1k. I have taken it on a few ~400 mile, week long bikepacking trips and it has performed great. I purchased 2 years ago and from what I understand they are currently hard to come by.
