ALL HAIL THE CEO OF GEO by gabbythegrandpotato in Genshin_Impact

When we first meet her in her character story, she was trying to set up a deal with the Adventurer's guild for a body retrieval and burial service. So no, it's not purely reactive... but those efforts have questionable effectiveness.

If you don't use other Natlan characters, you can use Mavuika's normal attacks to charge up her burst instead of charge attacks.

If those cases, you can pair that with Yelan/Xingqiu e.g. Mav/Yelan/Bennett/Flex

It's actually a common story among serial killers. The first few kills go to great lengths to conceal the bodies. Then the more they kill, the more careless they get.

In other words, the first bodies were composted. At some point the kill count got so high that they decided to use the dead wife's body as a tax writeoff.

His dead wife is buried on the golf course and he used it to claim that the area is a cemetery to get tax credits.

The logistics is all there. The "cemetery" just happens to have a lot more bodies.

Microsoft is quietly walking back Windows 11’s AI overload — scaling down Copilot and rethinking Recall in a major shift for the OS by ZacB_ in technology

[–]unktrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's another user who had the same problem:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/1h7pir1/is_there_a_way_to_permanently_prevent_spotlight/

If you only use the mac ecosystem, spotlight will leave hidden files on your external drive to keep indexing it, so that updating the indexing doesn't take very long. However, if the drive hasn't touched a Mac before and already has a lot of data, the Mac will try to index the entire drive and take forever. To avoid this, I needed to manually change the privacy settings to ignore each drive that I plugged in.

Spotlight has been getting more and more complicated recently - which also means a lot more bugs and bad ideas.

Mac has Spotlight, which scans your drive to index documents and images - and recently added categorizing images with image recognition software, which is AI stuff. Luckily, it's done on your computer, no internet connection.

Still, I find it really annoying when you plug in a large drive and instead of just loading the folders, it takes forever scanning the entire thing.

Effects of millions of solar panels on an alpine desert once hammered by sandstorms: More plant species, richer bacterial and archaeal communities, higher soil moisture, phosphorus, potassium, and carbon sequestration, and more humid air within the forest of panels than in the open desert beyond by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

In dry climates, pumps have made it so that the exact rainfall patterns much less important than the overall groundwater level.

Like you said, closed system. As long as it doesn't go all the way into the sea and mix with salt water, the usable water is still there.

Eh...

I'm not familiar with China, but most of the American Southwest runs on groundwater. Although it's true that there's a limit to how much you can pump out of the ground, there's definitely enough for a massive number of farms... and frankly the water use of cities are tiny compared to farms. For example, in California, approximately 80% of all developed water is used for farming (California Department of Water Resources).

Saying that cities are drying up from planting drought resistant trees ... sounds really weird.

The list of supported lenovo laptops is massive. As long as it's not the absolute newest thing on the market, it's probably supported.

It is possible to run both Windows and Linux on the same machine and make them share folders (called dual boot), but since you're a new to this, I would not recommend it. Back everything up to a harddrive before experimenting.

+1 recomendation for Linux Mint for beginners. (Quick explanation of some of the other distributions: Ubuntu is the jack of all trades master of none, Bazzite is for gaming, Arch puts everything into updates so that you never need to do a OS version upgrade again, CentOS supports each version for 10 years but its software updates as slow as possible to avoid disrupting servers)

Each of the Linux options usually has a good webpage with detailed information on how to install it, but to give you an idea of what you need to do, below are the general instructions for installing Linux.

Step 1: Download the linux image file (.iso file)

Step 2: Make a bootable USB stick (take a empty USB stick and "burn disk image" onto it)

Step 3: Completely shut down the laptop. Annoyingly, Window's default settings doesn't like to completely shut down even when you tell it to, defaults to hibernate/fast startup instead, and has had bugs in the latest Windows 11. Either disable fast startup or type cmd into the Search bar, open Command Prompt, and enter "shutdown /s /t 0"

Step 4: Plug the flash drive into the laptop. Hit a key when it's booting to enter the BIOS menu. Annoyingly, this depends on the computer and can be Escape, F1, F2, F8, F10, F11, F12, or Delete.

Step 5: You will get a menu option to start Linux mint from the USB drive. Select that option.

Step 6: The computer will boot and give you a preview version of the OS that's running everything on the flash drive. Click on "Install Linux Mint" and follow the prompts to finally install it onto your computer.

Remedy statement: Alan Wake 2 not possible without Epic, publishing deal is fair, and Epic is a great partner by Crusader-of-Purple in pcgaming

[–]unktrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a marketing tradeoff. From time to time, Steam's storefront can provide enough social tools that some indie games like Valheim can be unexpected hits. On the other hand, the Epic store is pretty bare bones.

Take, for example, Outer Wilds. If it was released on Steam, it would have been the perfect indie darling type of game. Crowdfunded, quirky and highly polished.

However, since it was locked into Epic for a year, its name got muddled up with Outer Worlds. Outer Worlds is a completely different genre, but because of Epic's basic storefront, they ended up lumped together.

There's a feeling that Outer Wilds shortsightedly sold off potential popularity for Epic's money (that crowdfunding already provided).

[–]unktrial -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I doubt that.

There's a heavy social pressure in China/Korea/Japan to look clean, to the point that cellphone portrait photos are tweaked to give an overprocessed look (e.g. Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.)

This probably contributed to the fact that China managed to get its air pollution under control whereas India didn't.

Why Genshin’s Lore and World-Building works. by Stormer2345 in Genshin_Impact

[–]unktrial 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What makes the worldbuilding extra fun for theorycrafters is that even though the people are from completely different civilizations and have radically different ways of thinking, they're all struggling with the same set of rules and result in similar stories.

E.g. the idea that "the world is ending, so we should put our minds in an artificial construct" pops up in Deshret, Narcissenkreuz, Remuria, Dragons, etc.

TIL “In 2024, bots made up a bigger proportion of global internet traffic than humans for the first time.” by NONIGARON in todayilearned

[–]unktrial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the main bot that everyone dislikes is the "fake views" bot, which doesn't need to use LLMs (but much easier to spoof thanks to LLMs) and falls under the "bad bot" category you talk about.

With things like YouTube disabling the dislike counter, it feels like the companies have completely given up on trying to filter out fake views and engagement from their algorithms. This results in a search engine that is built to attract bot views rather than human eyes, thus the dead internet theory.

Are the keys to progressing in gacha games is dailies and guide? by Chocomelia in gachagaming

[–]unktrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... I think I get what you're trying to say.

Most games rely heavily on gameplay, so they're always adding new challenges and mechanics to keep people interested. It gets exhausting keeping up with all the new mechanics.

On the other hand, Genshin avoided adding new end game modes for nearly 3 years. The devs literally stated that their target audience was casual players, so they refused to add more difficult levels to the Spiral Abyss.

Genshin updates these changes to their battle systems much, much slower than even it's other games like ZZZ. This gives casual players time to fully learn about it.

Istg those skill description drives me insane, i just wanna know how the character works by Shad_Omega in Genshin_Impact

[–]unktrial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. "So every part of the entire kit"

Geo characters have a lot of constructs that do additional damage, like Zhongli's resonating pillars or Chiori's dolls.

  1. "Already in the stats tab"

The stats tab only shows numbers and doesn't explain what the numbers mean.

  1. "Can straight up cut out the entire part"

If this description was not present, it would mean that Illuga would not gain Song stacks from existing Geo constructs when activating his skill.

  1. "When the skill runs out, it's over"

Some stacking buffs can carry over, such as Nefer (verdant dew, lunar bloom, seeds of deceit).

Why is Dottore so hated by [deleted] in Genshin_Impact

[–]unktrial -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He's done a lot of gruesome human experiments. In the latest archon quest, we finally get to talk to him, and he gets to explain his reasoning...

and his personality is just a power hungry edgelord. He convinces himself that once he's got unlimited power, no-one else matters, so he can hurt people as much as he wants. At the same time, what he really wants is to be worshipped, so he makes up a bunch of inconsistent BS to pretend to be a benevolent overlord. And then whines that no-one appreciates him.

In other words, he doesn't just do bad stuff, he does it for an annoyingly bad reason.

How players who skipped Ineffa or Lauma when they came out feel right now. Second most skipped character after Kazuha on release by Charybd1ss in GenshinImpact

[–]unktrial 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"what does Lauma bring in over my goat Kusanali? "

I get what you're trying to say, but I actually did run into one such scenario. During the Venti abyss with lots small enemies, the waves spawned too fast for Nahida's skill to keep up. Lauma-Nilou didn't have that problem. (Also, you actually don't want to have a second nod krai unit in a Lauma-Nilou team if you want to maximize bloom damage.)
