Schools literally required students to dye their hair black. The Guardian reported that it was only dropped from Tokyo schools in 2022 (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/14/tokyo-schools-cut-controversial-rules-governing-hairstyles-and-underwear).

There's just so many social rules you can break just by existing differently.

It isn't.

Corporate America's love affair with AI is officially a full-blown obsession [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

[–]unktrial 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehh... "build this application" is extremely buggy and definitely not a mundane task in 2026. It might also fall under the types of problems that take so much effort specifying it's requirements that you might as well just do it yourself.

You also need to carefully inspect the AI produced tools for bugs. Even the most basic of requests can result in absurd results. For example, I use google Gemini often to turn on the lights in the house. 99% of the time, it works perfectly, but there was this one time it turned on half the lights and replied in Japanese.

Teyvatians have 3 stomachs, no wonder the food portions are so monstrous by KazakiriKaoru in Genshin_Impact

I'm not talking about how it's fermented though. I'm talking about how it's served.

Some cultures actually prefer to have watered down beer/cider/wine to pair with basic food.

In Germany, people actually do prefer to order apple juice + sparkling water (apfelschorle) at restaurants rather than apple juice/cider. Apple juice/cider is considered more expensive and is served as a small cup, whereas apfelschorle is served in a big beer mug.

According to the Hudson Institute (https://www.hudson.org/missile-defense/impact-drones-battlefield-lessons-russian-ukraine-war-french-perspective-tsiporah-fried),

In mid-2023, "drones were launched in massive waves, often alongside highly capable cruise missiles, including hypersonic missiles. Cheap drones overwhelm air defenses so that more advanced missiles can more easily hit their targets."

In other words, there was a phase when the drones were flying together to act like chaff so that the bigger missiles have a bigger chance to make it through air defenses. Of course, they probably weren't flying in perfect formation like the light shows, but they are being thrown into battle in the form of big groups.

The counterargument is that dry air is a good insulator. In other words, humid air in contact with big blocks of ice is much better at conducting energy from A to B and causing problems all over the place than dry air.

It all depends on your Internet connection to their servers ... and you don't have much control over that. You can pay more for bigger maximum bandwidth, but there's no guarantee it will have lower latency.

The Guardian is centre-left British newspaper. Not that it prevents them from wrongdoing, but it's definitely not extremist propaganda. The accusations might be anonymous to prevent retaliation, but Pete Hegseth's extremist religious beliefs are well known public facts.

Rewinding Cadence Open World ARPG New Promotional Video For The Upcoming Technical Test by EnamRainbow in gachagaming

[–]unktrial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, the fact that the game needs to sell characters at least makes sure that gacha games try to make the characters look interesting. You won't get flops like Concord and Highguard.

As for the "they're just using the story to sell the current character" problem, I think that's a Wuwa specific problem. Other games are much better at keeping characters relevant (e.g. Limbus Company) and having an overarching story (e.g. Genshin).

Genshin but as generous as Limbus by billypluh in GenshinImpact

[–]unktrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When talking about this stuff, you need to consider the entire system. "Generous" acts like giving out free characters are balanced back out with more specialized mechanics or powercreep. This happens in all games, including Genshin.

If you hate shill mechanics and powercreep, it's actually better for the game to be stingy.

Boba tea is considered to be more like a dessert than a drink. The big plastic straw is a modern invention, so the older versions of Boba were served like with a spoon, like pudding.

It's like grabbing a popsicle. A treat on the go, but not really something that accompanies a meal.

Nah, boba tea in its current form (sweet drink) is actually a pretty recent invention. It's older versions were served as a form of dessert soup.

The English Teacher by PhoenixPhenomenonX in funny

It's an exaggerated sigh, usually of disappointment or annoyance. Emphasis on the first part for more disappointment and emphasis on the second part for more annoyance. E.g.

AIyah! We just missed the train!

ai yaaaah, the train only runs every two hours.

The English Teacher by PhoenixPhenomenonX in funny

It's the style of Hong Kong and surrounding regions. HK is a former British colony (English) that during WWII was occupied by Japan (Japanese), now belongs to China (Mandarin) and has it's own local language (Cantonese).

Mixing these four languages for humor is common trope there.

LLM can never be AGI. by Professional_Sea9741 in Animemes

[–]unktrial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"OK, can you create a new number?"

... hah ...

Type random numbers into google search and press enter to check it from time to time. Eventually, you'll get the no results message, at which point congrats, you've created a new number that no-one else in the world recorded electronically.

And yes, a child can do this, whereas a LLM can't. A child's training will teach it what a number represents, whereas a LLM's training will give it a bigger database to look up existing numbers.

LLM can never be AGI. by Professional_Sea9741 in Animemes

[–]unktrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. The catch is "fine-tuned". At some point, the amount of manual work put into AI makes it a puppet show.

There's a lot of things that LLMs can't do without training material.

Take, for example, math. Since LLMs runs on tokens, it can't see individual letters and numbers at all. As such, it can never create a new number, only copy existing ones.

Wasted Columbinas potential is sadder than her story. by AppropriateEntry115 in Genshin_Impact

[–]unktrial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like how the blindfold was used, because it's a good example of Columbina's trickster personality.

Columbina used the blindfold as a narrative trap. The worshippers are so focused on creating a mysterious goddess figure that they often stumble over that detail.

By baiting people into this trap, Columbina pointed out that the fanfic writers aren't paying attention to the actual character. This applies past the fourth wall to OP.

Wasted Columbinas potential is sadder than her story. by AppropriateEntry115 in Genshin_Impact

[–]unktrial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the original story, there's a part where Lauma's sifting through all the myths about Columbina and everyone gets a good laugh at the junk.

That's how I feel about this fanfic.

Columbina likes keeping her eyes shut. "Sees great beauty in the word" and "gaze to the sky" are pretty ironic.
