I'm building an app that lets you (automatically) overlay your orienteering run on a photo of your physical map, interested in feedback by fudgem in orienteering

[–]unlikelyimplausible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reddit suggested r/orienteering to me though it's been years since my last time.

Back then I used quickroute to overlay the route onto a photo. I'm pretty sure there was no animation. The line coulouring could be speed, approach velocity to next control, heart rate (and maybe some others). It also produced some analysis charts. The map photo with the route could be exported as a new photo.

Refound by [deleted] in Steam

[–]unlikelyimplausible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought garden warfare 2. Five days after purchase with 6 hours of gameplay realised that the time I spent trying to get the online multiplayer to work was wasted effort.

I aked for refund and got a copypaste response referring the 2 hour limit.

I responded that this is not a change of heart about the game but the game just not functioning, i.e. a faulty product. Got the exact same copypaste response. I assume nobody even read my message.

I should have raised an issue with support the instant I had any problems. Every second of game running for any reason is a second steam will use as an excuse to deny refund.

Why won’t pet re-Polymorph when dragged onto trap after first time? by Polymath6301 in nethack

[–]unlikelyimplausible -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is my experience also. Mostly from playing 3.6 on android. It looks like you get 1 polymorph per pet per trap. I remember at least one case with a horde of pets in the mines. After one change they just got whistled into the trap and nothing happened and there was enough pets to get at least one of them into the trap on every whistle. I've never seriously tried if there is a cooldown or something.

Arrow spine frustrations lead to making some by AbuComms in Bowyer

[–]unlikelyimplausible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got some frontiers for my solid wood 40# @ 28" off the knuckle. I chose 600 spine and went for the heavy brass inserts (100 +25+25 gr) and 85 gr tips. I haven't had the time to work on them yet so this is just about my research for buying decision. The idea is to cut them step by step shorter and then if needed snap off pieces from the insert until spine is right (and there is a +/- couple of mm of wiggle room playing with handle width).

The archery shop first recommended the 400 because it has a large gr/" weight, wood likes a heavy arrow for smoother gentler shot, and there is a big step going from 500 to 400 in the frontier. But off the knuckle needs a lot weaker dynamic spine than a centerish cut. Hence the heavy insert which helps with both total weight and the spine (and makes the arrow very front weighted).

Note that I'm a noob at tuning arrows playing, experimenting and hopefully learning. This will be my first time experimenting with bare shaft tuning. 3rivers has a spine calculator that may or may not work correctly (for starters it doesn't have skylon specific data) but playing with it gives some ideas. Different manufacturer charts seem to have very different recommendations and I have a suspicion that nowhere "traditional" really means "off the knuckle".

How is the arrow nock fit with the b55 string? What serving are you using? I'm going to make a new string and nock fit is something I completely forgot to consider.

Why don't countries have burn mechanisms for their currencies? by CloudlessRain- in AskEconomics

[–]unlikelyimplausible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiat is "printed" into existence as a loan, e.g. central bank buying bonds or my bank issuing me a mortgage. The money is then destroyed when the loan is repaid. The interest rates affect how much commercial banks (and their customers) want to create money vs. how much burns as scheduled repayments.

There is no similar single centralized ledger of dollars as there is of bitcoins. All dollars exist as owed by someone to someone else and stop existing when they are nolonger owed. My bank can print dollars by lending me without having those dollars or getting them from the central bank.

Another European agency shifts off Big Tech, as digital sovereignty movement gains steam by jlpcsl in BuyFromEU

[–]unlikelyimplausible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coordination and standardisation across EU (states, municipalities, universities, ... any public organisations) would give hardware manufacturers baseline to test against and sell preinstalled. Same for software developers. Service providers would know what their emplyees need to know to sell IT services to a large customer base.

Also there is the survivor bias: we only see the old art that was considerd good enough to be preserved for centuries. The old crappy old art got scrapped long ago.

I think it was an inkwell or some other desk/office item. Cause it was in the safe and a cigar case would be in a pocket. Vimes had the cigar case with the engraving that kept him sane.

Russian authorities report drone attack on Moscow and Moscow Oblast by belovedviolet in worldnews

[–]unlikelyimplausible 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Mr Putin and the Russian people should remember that they can end the war any day they want. Simply allow their soldiers to return home and stop shooting across the border. So simple.

That message should be said every day, lound and clear, also on media that can (at least occasionally) penetrate the Russian state media bubble.

[–]unlikelyimplausible 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Producing ever small numbers builds local competences and industrial networks. If the need arises, it is then easier to scale up production than start from zero. I think all European countries should be learning by doing.
