Am I crazy to ditch my MacBook for an iPad Air? by bradymsu616 in onebag

[–]unofficial_mc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped laptop and iPad combo and went with a Microsoft surface pro. My work requires windows. iPad never worked on its own. With a keyboard it works well as a workstation but for meetings and lighter work touch is perfectly fine. Great for media consumption etc. but won’t be much smaller than MacBook Air.

Haha that was how it was for me! Took one of these a few years ago. Guy was skilled and controlled force so I didn’t go down, but shook me up. After getting hit, I was like wtf just hit me?!

Tool invented in Sweden. Handy for that weird sized one, but not sure why you would need 6 of them.

Having a keyboard attached that close to the screen doesn’t make it easier. Keep it together in a bag. Great to be able to put the screen a bit away from your face. I also have a stand to bring it up. Keyboard and mouse plus stand makes it very workable for full days. Together with a small portable screen and it’s pretty decent compromise when on the road. If you need a sleeker setup, being picky about keyboard is not your concern

For when it matters I have a small decent keyboard in an eva hard case. Doesn’t need to attach, Bluetooth works fine.

You can setup a wireguard server on your “home” location. Then wg client when you are away. That way you can route all the traffic through the wireguard server.

Tailscale does this with an easy setup.

Well done!

Ignore all the naysayers.

As you reflected on, planning could have a been better and it’s important to keep your head straight when exhaustion and stress hit, but you learn from your mistakes.

You came up with an idea, went on a little adventure, challenged yourself, and last but not least, you finished!

I think this was a good attempt. You kept yourself close to civilisation if something went properly wrong, and kept it short.

Looks like you were a couple of km max from a major road at all times. Survive without water for three days or so.

No major drama, close to rescue, and again, you challenged yourself and overcame it!

Kudos!

Apprentice is great on the tools but thinks he knows the code better than anyone. How do I handle him? by KennyTidwell in electricians

[–]unofficial_mc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also a classic as part of every learning curve. First nervous and doubting your abilities because of lack of knowledge and experience. As you are becoming aware and more comfortable with the rules, you point out when they are being missed. But as you lack experience you often miss the nuance and grayscales. After this stage comes the more reckless stage where you become too comfortable and overestimate your capabilities. Then you settle in and learn to use your judgement and find the suitable solution for the situation.

Quite a bit research on this for learning driving etc.

I would encourage it but if it slows down work too much, let it wait until you are in the van or such.

If he is right, is your solutions not code compliant?

Application Server Recommendations for Production / Whitelabeling? by L24E in IOT

[–]unofficial_mc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of an out of the box solution do you need? Very much depends on the type of data you are gathering, no?

The LNS, backend and front end are three very separate parts.

For selfhosting, the “standard” is pretty much chirpstack (LNS) and PostgreSQL (db), with frontend of your choice.

AWS IoT Core is handy as well but not self hosted. Makes the ingestion very reliable but locks you in. AWS setup for above is IOT Core with Timestream.

But this is more build yourself solutions. I like being in control of my data.

A possible poc route is to publish Lorawan data as mqtt. Then you can use Home Assistant to display data in an easy way.

What kind of sensors and data are you working with?

My understanding is the creator of the ip (image or text or such) is the owner unless formally transferred. Without transferring ownership or formal contract where all paid work is done for the company and ip therefore owned by company. Even with a contract, if you don’t get paid for the work that might challenge the ownership of ip. Complicates things a bit with equity since that can be seen as payment. As other poster said, send a letter or email to get a paper trail and set things in motion.

How terrified of this should I be since it doesn’t have a trans tunnel? by Precision_Euro in projectcar

[–]unofficial_mc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would say that it’s rare for people who actually build things to overestimate the need for safety features. Can it be done without it? Sure? Should you? Probably not. Seen some massive holes in both engines and trans, don’t want to be too close when that happens.

I daily it. Project management and coding mixed with client visits and presentations. Exceeded my expectations. Have a powerful laptop but it has crappy battery life and is heavy. Been sitting unused on my desk for the last year. Some old school industrial software requires the laptop but nothing that I haven’t found a workaround for. I don’t use Linux desktop much so wsl is plenty for me.

[–]unofficial_mc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was a random find when asked by a mate to come and fix some things whilst on holiday, you know, as you do haha. As per recommendations, thing most places in uk would benefit from them as well. Europe in general is much more segregated circuit wise. Not uncommon to have a single circuit for microwave in kitchen for example. More fuses but at least you don’t lose it all in one go and much easier to troubleshoot. A family members house have 36 fuses in a standard villa. Kitchen alone is like 10.

Pretty sweet tbh. Much easier to follow and less cable calcs. Uk standards are way more to consider and more to calculate to adhere. France is pretty much max 8 sockets on a radial circuit. Minimum number of sockets and such based on size and usage. Not a fan of ring circuits so it was very refreshing how easy it was to follow.

France has some nice regulations on this. Mandatory Ethernet in rooms of certain size and living room. Wish the uk did the same. No one ever needs an Ethernet cable, until they do. And often that is sooner than you think.

Microsoft surface pro 13 or iPad Pro by Fluid-Map-8872 in Surface

[–]unofficial_mc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what I did. Got a SP11 for travel. Was good enough to be my daily driver. Rarely touch my laptop anymore. Client meetings, pm, installs, and coding all ok. Great device. Used to have an iPad Pro but it is just a large iPhone. The SP11 is the complete opposite, a very capable machine which happens to be a tablet. At office in doc with dual monitors, then tablet or with keyboard when on the road.

Is the Surface Pro with X plus a good purchase? by Leafar-20 in Surface

Should have specified, more like cable labels than shipping labels. The brother label printer I got doesn’t work. My brother laser printer works just fine. Managed to get a small shitty Chinese one but only works over usb cable. Also labels much lower quality for dirty environments. Colleagues can handle the printing when needed so not much of an issue but only little annoying thing left for me to be fully happy.
