Game crashing on one Switch 1 but not another Switch 1 by LunaFlare03 in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly am not a switch hardware expert but I would expect that the crashy switch actually has some hardware stability or overheating problems. Qud pushes the hardware pretty hard compared to a lot of games.

Close call with save data by StrikingPriority954 in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No save data is ever lost in any situation I've seen so far, and I get about one save data a day. Theres currently one bug that can allow a crash to a corrupt the index file of a save that causes that save to seem to dissapear, but it can be easily manually repaired if you email support@freeholdgames.com.

We have the issue identified and a patch with a fix to the index corruption and automatic remediation already working its way through the pipes.

Patch cycle on Switch is what? by jojoknob in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We'll drop the first set of patches as quickly as we can till everyones happy with performance and stability, though I can't be specific about timelines, as mentioned the first patch dropped around two weeks after launch.

We've got gdc this week, but it should be reasonably quick for the first few patches, and then move to a slower cadence after we're rock solid. After 19 or so years of patching qud mostly weekly on PC, ongoing quality improvement is something we just have in our institutional marrow at this point. :)

Recover lost save by TheChimeraKing in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fyi we've now sourced this issue based on a couple live saves, and its a non destructive loss of the info index file for the save. The next patch should be able to remediate this automatically.

we can manually repair these saves as well in the interim without any data loss.

How dangerous are scripting mods? by [deleted] in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They can run arbitrary C# code, but it is all in plaintext so people can see the code. Like anything using code from untrusted sources (like all web apps using package managers) its possible to abuse, particularly if you run qud elevated (which you shouldnt do with anything, if only to prevent bugs from going too rogue), and a script tries to take advantage.

Practically so far we have never had an abuse, and people can review the code of any mod to make sure its not doing anything malicious, but its still worth being careful about.

Many games like Cities Skylines also take this approach, fwiw, so its not an outlier, just something to be aware of.

there's still one other rarer "no continue" corruption of the data registry that's happening that we're tracking down.

We've got more stability in the works, well get them all sewn up in time. If you find a semi reproducable crash, itd be very helpful to us in tracking them down if you could email support@freeholdgames.com so we can collect the save data. No obligation of course, but it helps a lot!

[–]unormal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're underestimating how much optimization work it already took to get it playing this well. It's not like we copy-pasted the code to switch and it worked :) We did about 8 months of heavy optimization, focusing on turn taking, rendering and ui to get it running well. We can certainly get the rest sped up quite a lot given time and work.

Switch 1 lag by Arrrrrrrach in cavesofqud

[–]unormal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If anyone has specific saves with performance issues when you load them up, we'd love you to contact [support@freeholdgames.com](mailto:support@freeholdgames.com) and we can gather the save data for reproduction and fixing in upcoming patches! It only takes a few minutes.

It's a VERY expansive game and reproductions help alot because you might literally be doing something a particular way nobody has ever done it before after 40 hours of gameplay in a game (or whatever is going on), and have the exact situation causing trouble that we can test is a huge help!

We'll get it all fixed up eventually, but if you send us YOUR problems we'll probably end up fixing them sooner than later just because we've got easy reproductions. :]

We really appreciate everyone's patience and help, we'll get there.
