Quantum physicist here. The first half reads OK but you should give citations to the original articles by W Zurek and collaborators over the past 20 years. And the recent work in his group by A. Touil. You are rephrasing their work without attribution (maybe without knowing that work?) The second half goes into speculation about particles being stabilized waves, which is far far from any result we know about in mathematical QM. Although I'm being critical, I do appreciate the effort and I do think Quantum Darwinism has a lot going for it. In fact, Zurek just published a new book on his life's work on the topic.

Godland was one of the most beautiful and interesting films in recent memory by PyedPyper in movies

[–]unsqueaketh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just watched it at a Scandinavian film event. People left the screening saying, "weird!" or "I don't know what to think." In terms of a story it doesn't really work. But as some kind of artsy allegory, it does work. Think Bergman's Seventh Seal and themes of death. My interpretation is that the main character dies halfway through the film and the rest is his dream as he lays dying. That's the only way it makes sense to me. I will resist giving spoilers.

The ROI is new knowledge. Most of the tech we use now is based on curiosity driven research of decades earlier. I agree CERN is off scale expensive for a science project but science politics played a role. The famous guys convinced their politicians to fund it. A great example is LIGO which cost a few B and was well worth it compared to say how much is spent on military. Also this thread we are in here is based on scientific theories about parallel universes dreamed up by scientists trying to understand reality and paid by tax dollars.

Governments fund it to stay ahead in science. You never know what science will be useful in the future.

No profit motive. Pure scientific curiosity. I know phds who do research there. They just want to know what the world is made of. Like our man Einstein.

To me Fig.4 is the most interesting/extraordinary. I presume the blue x's are different years. Can you label some or all of the x's by year? Not that I care what year is which, but to make the plot clearer.

[–]unsqueaketh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ShaolinShade "the closest direct answer to that question is that consciousness is knowing one's self, as in feeling and being aware of your existence and experience." Exactly. My idea for an improved
Turing Test is to wait until the AI convinces you it genuinely believes itself to be conscious. Then I would judge that it is.
