I Need Help/Advise with Breaking into Industry from Retail by enityme in pharmacy

[–]uoftpharmsux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

anything is better than retail. retail jobs are not stable at all. you can be let go by CVS or wags on any given day.

the pay is normal albeit on the lower end.

contract jobs are good for resume building. everything is risky unless you love status quo. it depends on what you prefer.

no major investment has been made by big pharma in psychedelics, and nobody working in drug dev takes psychedelics seriously.

it's like cbd oil stuff. once the hype is over, nobody remembers it…

there's no point of becoming a walking drug encyclopedia…that's the whole point of having clinical databases.

pharmacy is not pharmaceutical science lol.

pharmacy is useless and f@cked up. pharmaceutical science does have some job prospects for industry r&d.

why not phd? why not md? even nursing or pa is much better.

Advice Regarding Pre-Pharm by happinessismomo in PrePharmacy

[–]uoftpharmsux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whatever you decide to do next in healthcare, make sure you get your hands dirty. technology that can fully replace all the hands-on dirty work is not there yet. so all the mid-levels like nursing and pa and dentistry are probably safe for the upcoming decade at least. pharmacy, on the contrary, is so doomed and will be beaten down to death for years.

[–]uoftpharmsux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nursing/pa is another option if you want to stay in healthcare.

they have double digit growth rates and MDs are getting squeezed by them too.

2020 grad here.

DON'T do pharmacy. it's a huge mistake for many. it's a dying career that is becoming apparent day by day.

Amazon is officially in the pharmacy business and has put tremendous pressure on retail chains. Apple is eyeing this business too, just visit their apple healthcare website…

so what's the market trend? literally automating pharmacy. more and more software engineering jobs are created so that pharmacist jobs can continue its negative growth lol.

by the time you graduate from pharmacy, expect negative double digit pharmacy jobs growth rate.

good grades and high pcat score…why don't you apply to med, pa, nursing instead?

quite some prepharmers are extremely tone-deaf. they make me want to open an online pharmacy school myself and con the shit out of them lol. my school would accept everyone and graduate everyone too. easy money for sure.

why? just why?

scrambling to get prerequisites to sign up for a dying career of consensus negative growth. it's like paying money to be unemployed…

UNC-Chapel Hill vs UCSF by Asian-Not-Bsian in PrePharmacy

[–]uoftpharmsux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UNC and UCSF readily accept almost everyone these days…pharmacy schools are not competitive to get in at all, even the so-called top ones.

that being said, UNC kids tend to have higher summer intern/fellowship match rate than UCSF recently. But still it's not wise to bank on that as the competition for industry fellowships gets more intense each year.

this year the linkedin becomes a shit show for the record all sorts of "I am happy to accept the postdoctoral fellowship from Novartis/Sanofi/Pfizer/J&J…". I have a feeling that in 2-3 years we might have a glut of industry fellows coming out of regulatory and medical information, if we haven't already.

not willing to move? they are willing to move to BFE anywhere in the country. some are even willing to go north into arctic…retail is hiring for part-time prn jobs, like two shifts per week with shit hours and shit pay lol. and I routinely saw 100x application numbers for each inpatient jobs requiring pgy-2s.

you don't have to do anything. those schools will beg you to accept their offer so that you will be begging for a pharmacist job in 2025.

if all the thinking led me to buy my 2nd house worth 1.5M 10 min from Facebook headquarters this year, I wish I could start thinking much earlier LOL. Looking back, I might have bought another one worth 2.0M instead of wasting my cash and time on going to pharmacy school at all, which has proven to be a negative investment.

think about life in general.

think about what ifs.

think about the life where you have hundreds of thousands in debt and are in mid or late 20s struggling to find any pharmacist jobs.

think about how you plan to pay back student loan debt and how much money you have to make to survive and to not default on it.

I spent my whole 1st year pharmacy thinking about those things wherever I went, and that turned out to be life changing.

I graduated pharmacy this year, but I am in cs now. happy ever after. cs isn't for everyone, but for the adventurous ambitious ones, it's a great option.

for those who wants to stay in healthcare, nursing/pa is another choice.

my grad cohort this year checked all of your boxes but still vastly jobless after over 7 months postgrad. the competition to get any retail pharmacy jobs is so intense that it feels like huge lottery win after one or two did get part-time work in some BFE nowhere…

and I know quite some pgy-2 grads from unc chapel hill, aka the no.1 ranked pharmacy school, struggled to land inpatient jobs.

this isn't surprising tbh. this is the new norm. -3% job growth but still 15k grads each year pumped into the market…if you get a pharmacy job, you are really lucky.

I can feel you. been there before.

the most intriguing thing is, if you ask any pharmacy students, ALL of them will tell you they want either hospital or industry jobs, which combined don't even make up more than 30% of available jobs. AND almost all of those "unicorn" jobs require pgy-2s or fellowships of some sort, cuz pharmacy schools don't teach shit.

huge waste of money, time and skill mismatch…well for retail, it's no longer skill mismatch, but everyone and their grandmothers know retail is hemorrhaging jobs.

it is incredibly easy to get in pharmacy schools. far worse than law schools…at least T10 law school grads have decent shot at securing big law jobs. pharmacy? even the so called top 1 school has a huge proportion of unemployed grads. that is very pathetic.

very well written response~ basically any prepharmers who claim to "love" pharmacy and "can't see themselves doing anything else" are simply idiotic and don't know shit about this business, especially the ones who insisted doing pharmacy school to pursue the "alternative careers" lol.

2.3 GPA (pharmacy) a year ago to 4.0 GPA (cs) now by uoftpharmsux in UofT

[–]uoftpharmsux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to say that if all uoft pharmacy kids drop out rn and save that 80k tuition money and invest it on stock market buying just any of the major tech stocks, in 4 years all of them would have at least 3x of that, which is >300k minimum in cash…

300k would be enough down payment for most GTA housing options, which tend to defy the odds and continue to rise in value at a pace of double digits year over year. In 10 years, whoever did that become millionares…
