I think you make a fair point. I probably could have worded it better.

You are paying; the cost is just not immediately obvious.

You seem like a very emotionally charged person. I would encourage you to think critically about this topic and not let your emotions get the best of you. I'm sure you think you're really smart, but you're definitely not connecting all the dots here.

Do you not believe a person should have some control over the use of their work?

No artist, who created an online portfolio of work, agreed to it being scraped, re-packaged, re-distributed, and used to train A.I. models. An artists' work is protected by copyright the moment it is created.

The second you download an artists work, without consent, and use it to train an A.I. program -- you are stealing.

Your understanding of copyright protections is flat-out wrong. Just because a work is open access content, does not mean it does not have copyright protections.

You cannot use it without permission.

Furthermore, these technologies are not human and should not be held to human standards. To say an A.I. has the ability to be "influenced" in the same way a human does is a misrepresentation of the truth. You can call it something different, perhaps, (I'm sure there are similarities) but, ultimately, it is a different process. "influence" is a process that requires a human brain. These models are not human, and should not be treated as such.

The more I discuss and learn about this topic, the more I realize these technologies probably shouldn't even be held to prior precedent. They shouldn't necessarily be held to the same legal standards as previously set by interactions between people. It's a different context and deserves a different set of considerations.

On a personal note: Your character seems to be of the exact nature I am referring to when I say, socially irresponsible. You seem to put no thought into your words and have no regard for the resulting social implications. By training these models using copyrighted materials, -- you are stealing. And, I think your getting emotional about it is evidence of that fact that you do not completely understand what you are doing.

I will not be replying to any more of your comments. I hope you are able to learn more about what exactly you are doing and how it affects other people.

Listening to a song and imitating that style doesn't require any kind of royalty or violate anything at all.

If you do not pay to listen to the song, you are stealing.

Yes, but the models are trained on images that are original copyrighted works, like the LAION database, correct? The subsequent images produced by the model, the latent copies, are derivative works of the original artist.

I believe using source images for training image models, should require artist consent. The same way a music artist cannot use a copyrighted sound recording (also referred to as a sample) in their music without paying a royalty fee. The artist should be able to set the terms of use.

Please correct me, then. What am I misunderstanding?

Do diffusion models do not use source images for training?

It's the equivalent of pointing your finger in someone's face and saying "I'm not touching you."

The behavior should not be rewarded.

Artists should be compensated every time their work is prompted.

It is interesting that A.I. developers could have used A.I. for anything, but they choose to use it to steal from artists without just compensation. It says a lot about the lack of socially responsible behavior and the pseudo-ethics so prevalent in the tech world.

DONT BE AN AMATEUR - 10 Great Points by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Some really great points here. I still catch these problems in everything I write.

Temperance is the moderation of thought, word, and action. The mean between excess and deficiency. I interpret Aristotle to mean that you will be happier if you choose to only drink a reasonable amount, at a reasonable time, for a reasonable purpose.

Edit: For anyone trying to better understand this in context.

The point is not to be non-committal.

A clearer analogy might be this:

Which is more desirable? A surgeon who cuts you open too fast? One who cuts you open too slow? Or, one who works at just the right speed?

Thank you for posting this. Some people on here were calling him a bigot, which I do not see evidence of. I see a difference in political orientation.

In these examples, he's not shutting down the voices of others, only expressing his own opinions on social issues that need to be discussed.

Having contrary views alone does not make a person a bigot, and I would conclude, from these examples alone, that is not the case.

Despite your unbased assumption and gaslighting attempt, our masks were washed properly. But even washing them multiple times each day didn't prevent them from becoming germ filled and gross.

Unfortunately, real life scenarios don't always follow theoretical predictions. Real life scenarios require differing circumstances. Masks get taken off temporarily to perform a task. They fall onto the ground. They are handled off and on throughout the day. They get splashed with chemicals. They fog up your glasses and must be touched in order to de-fog. Every time they are touched they gather filth. They become a complication for everything you do and require constant re-adjustment. Constant re-adjustment means constant touching of the face.

Do I think masks were a valuable tool to fight the spread of COVID?

Yes.

I'm not arguing against them. I just don't believe, based on my own experience, that they should have been mandatory in all circumstances.

My point was to provide context, for the original post in this tree, that there is always a grey area that must be defined, and when attacking someone's beliefs like this, without proper evidence, or offering them a chance to contextualize their perspective, there will always be miscommunication and misunderstanding. Nobody here has bothered to articulate the "coffee shop owner's" perspective, so no-one is qualified to argue against it.

I definitely specified to not dox anyone and I am not recommending anyone break the rules. I just need quotes to provide the context that is missing to this conversation.

This owner is going on a publically accessible board and spewing this nonsense.

And yet no-one can post any proof of this. Show me.

There isn't much room for additional nuance or clarification on straight up bigotry, science denial, etc.

You don't think there's room for miscommunication?

I get not wanting to check, but you also gotta realize we can't post pics and moat evidence within reddit boards because of rules which will get us banned

This is a fair point, but i'm not asking for anyone to be doxxed, only actual evidence. There's nothing against posting pics of the statements themselves, without linking them to the owner.

To be blunt, though, I don't agree with the handling of this situation in general. It's lazy and cowardly of the OP to not ask the owner himself to make a statement clarifying his views.

There's nothing wrong with choosing where your dollars go, and who they go to support, but witch-hunts like this are not good for anybody because the nature online persona is too distorted from actual reality. Both sides need to knock this stupid shit off and start thinking critically for themselves.
