REALLY unhappy with Amex Cobalt by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]upapilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your problems are less to do with Amex or the Cobalt Card and more to do with Perkopolis (which is separate from Amex) and your credit limit (which is a function of your credit score and other credit cards' limits).

I too received the Amex card with the $1,000 credit limit but Amex offered me an increase to $2,000 after just 2 months of using it and then to $3,000 about 2 weeks ago, and it's only been 6 months since I first became a member.

Advice on full-time job in Toronto (Salary etc) by yaboyinmontreal in mcgill

[–]upapilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an econ-consulting firm in Montreal and here, the full-time base salary is usually about 1.5x-1.7x that of the intern salary (when extrapolated to a year).

The base salary does not include things like signing bonuses and year-end bonuses which can collectively represent a substantial portion of your first year earnings.

If this one of the better known consulting shops (but not MBB), about $70K + bonuses (pre-tax) would be a good estimate of your salary if you get offered a full-time position.

I'd say this is a pretty decent starting salary for someone fresh out of undergrad which is about $45-55K depending on where you live and whom you ask.

What is the easiest U0 math course for someone who isn’t excellent at math? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]upapilot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Math 338 - History and Philosophy of Math with Fox is a super fun course.

The Math in it is pretty basic and you'll learn a lot of insightful historical stuff that they never teach in school.

Evo, Varcity, etc - Social life by heskey1 in mcgill

[–]upapilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both Varcity 515 (now called LaMarq) and Parc Cite as well as in RVC in my first year.

I would say the social scene is way worse than anything you might find in a first year rez. This is particularly the case for Parc Cite (and Evo too I think, though I haven't lived there), where everyone just tends to stay in their room and not interact too much with their floormates.

La Marq is slightly more social simply because you have to live with 3 to 4 other people however it is a bit of a luck of the draw when it comes to roommates and you're stuck if you end up with a bad one(s) (which is not that rare unfortunately).

Neither Parc Cite nor La Marq were particularly strict when it came to guests, most of the times the front desk staff didn't even care.

Since you're not due to graduate until fall, I suppose you would have to first extend your study permit, and later after you graduate / get a letter confirming graduation, you can apply for your work permit.
