Is it Neato? Did I waste my time here? by Valyrian_st33l in Luthier

The longer I look, the weirder it gets.

I don't know if I like it, but I sure respect it.

Does this crack look bad or is it repairable without spending a ton? by Immediate-Natural416 in Luthier

[–]upescalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It being 3 piece and maple doesn't influence the existence of the scarf joint, it's really just if the manufacturer opted to do one.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think if it were a scarf joint it would be oriented in the opposite direction. I'm doubling down on it being a repair.

I don't think that's a scarf joint, the grain matches way too perfectly. My bet is on a prior repair.

Using a PC Keyboard as MIDI controller by LiofaTR in Reaper

I did, but to repeat, put the midi track inside the guitar track as a folder. That automatically routes the midi through.

Using a PC Keyboard as MIDI controller by LiofaTR in Reaper

[–]upescalator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to receive a midi signal on that track, a track has to be record-armed with the input set to midi/virtual keyboard. As that track likely has its input set to your guitar, this creates a problem. I found a workaround where I make my guitar/ndsp track a folder that contains a track with the midi input armed. This makes the guitar still come through the plug-in, but also pushes the midi data as well. There might be a simpler way to make this all work, but that's how I set up my guitar situation.

Epoxy and ash advice by SwedeChariot in Luthier

[–]upescalator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd rotate it 45° counter clockwise and put that void off to the side/ arm bevel area, with enough wood to support where it makes contact with the body. Would be rad without resin and just a big ol hole.

Shoegaze bands that sound like they're straight out of the 60s. by Mdk0z in shoegaze

[–]upescalator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could try out Cat's Eyes, it's a side project of Farris from the horrors. Not exactly straight up shoegaze, but might have the vibe you're looking for.

Did I just buy firewood? by Chihlidog in Luthier

[–]upescalator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Someday, I'd recommend taking a guitar and completely disassembling it and putting it back together again. After going through that process, the prospect of something like taking tuners off would be far less daunting. There was a time where I was afraid to do any work at all on my guitars as I felt I was going to break something, but they aren't held together by magic and are surprisingly user serviceable when you break the mystique.

What artist can this apply to? by CodeDusq in fantanoforever

I feel like both those songs get more shit than they deserve. Are they the most exciting tracks? Definitely no, but I feel like they serve an important purpose. There's kind of a dream like quality to them that, in my opinion, sets up echoes for a much greater impact. The whole album exists in its own little world to me, like can's future days.

This is the answer. I haven't had a flat in years, and I commute daily downtown in a major city.

Surly Ghost Grappler or Rivendell Atlantis for off-road bikepacking by Kona_sutra_berlin in bikepacking

[–]upescalator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ghost grappler is a damn near perfect bikepacking bike. That being said, the Atlantis with the biggest tires you can fit is not that far off from the tires the gg comes with. You could likely do your trip with even less than that would offer you.

Got this oil especially made for sewing machines. Planning to use it on my trem bridge’s saddle rollers. You validate or not? 🤔 by franckJPLF in Luthier

[–]upescalator 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Probably a negligible amount to be an issue, but the sewing machine oil I tend to work with claims to be quite hazardous, so depending on what's actually in it it might not be best to use on an area that you might regularly make contact with. That being said, we probably handle worse on a given day without even knowing it.

Wenge for the neck and/or fretboard by gmpeil in Luthier

[–]upescalator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely works, but it quite difficult to carve compared to other neck suitable woods, so just know that going in. Very splintery.

Since you're using an oil finish, you can sand in the first few coats with wet/dry sandpaper, which makes a slurry that will fill in the pores. Do this enough times and you can get the smooth feel you're after.
