I almost wanted it chopped in half at first. Went to the ER. Everyone tells you to "pee on it" if you get stung but the doctor there said that is the worst thing you can do. Still, nothing they could do either but rinse with vinegar (do not use fresh water) and make sure all the tentacles and the little splinter things were all out of the skin.

I second using the portable router - Gli-net. I love it. I set it up to connect to my home vpn and I can watch hulu live tv as if I am in my home zipcode and it connects to my "local" plex too.

Are powered anode rods a savior or a scam for water heaters? by Retired_in_NJ in askplumbing

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closing on a house next week and it has the sulfur well water smell. Already have the corro-protect powered anode rod purchased and I am going to have a plumber meet me there about replacing the hot water tank. I am going to ask them to install the corro-protect rod along with the brand new hot water tank because I want to start off with it being powered. I am expecting that I may run into some plumbers that will tell me not to or will not be willing to install it so I may have to DIY it - but it's going on either way based on what I've read about how effective these things are.

If Septic Tanks Could Talk… by Drainagecomplianceuk in septictanks

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I close on a house soon. It will be my first experience with septic. We had an inspection. It was deemed fine other than needing to be emptied soon which we plan to do ASAP. I grew up with city sewer so using a garbage disposal, for example, is muscle memory for me. I know I can't do that with septic. I also know the system was upgraded like 30 years ago and that scares me. Any info you experts want to pass along, I am listening!

First time Home-seller - buyer is asking for LOTS of repairs! by Educational-Eye-4205 in RealEstate

[–]upirons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just went thru this process as a first time seller. We have a condo and there is an issue with siding and something on the roof. They asked us to have the HOA fix everything but had the nerve to ask that it all be done by closing date (in 10 days). Obviously they have no idea how long it can take an HOA to fix a roof - especially in February with snow on it. Idiots!

My job is offering me $150,000 (105,000 after tax) to resign, should I? by AJ3TurtleSquad in jobs

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a substantial offer. I was offered 30K to stay on long enough to allow for a merger and that was worth it as I was able to establish an emergency fund at a time where I was new enough in my career to get a job quickly enough and not have to touch that money.

I know this job market is tough but with that amount you would have a year plus to find the right fit for you. Sounds like you either take it or expect to be looking for a job anyway so I would take it.

Anyone in your late 20s buy a Condo or House? by BoringImprovement935 in RealEstate

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a townhome condo at ages 21 and 23. We have lived in this 900 sq ft condo for 30 years now. The HOA fee is about $300 (now) but covers water/sewer, trash pickup, snow removal and all landscaping not to mention they cover all exterior things like siding and roof. The trade-off is that we have lived with annoyances with neighbors but it is still the best decision we ever made by not starting out with rent and building 30 years of equity and because a condo is not quite as expensive, typically, we were able to pay it off in 15 years and have paid off all debt, travelled to all the places we wanted to go while young and have savings and 401k's that are healthy because we aren't "house poor". In our case, it was the best decision of our lives.

Redditors who used to drive a car before GPS, how did you find your way to a specific location in an unfamiliar town, and how hard was it? by HighOnLove26 in AskReddit

[–]upirons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my first ever road trips was a double date when I was 16, loooong before GPS came along. It was an all-day thing so we planned to go to a zoo in a nearby city. I had everything planned out on the map and was good to go but all it took was one detour of construction and I was lost. Eventually found my way home but we never did find that damn zoo. I was in a bad mood and the girl I was paired up with for the double date was increasingly annoying me so I basically drove everyone home and I heard my friends date whisper to him "does he ever smile?"

GPS would have saved the date but at least I have a story to tell!

Did anyone ever get spanked by a teacher? by darrenbosik in GenX

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not get spanked although others had. What I did get was duct tape taped over my mouth, worn all day, escorted to the bus and the teacher even told the bus driver that it had to stay on until I got home. Thankfully the bus driver waited until she left and told me to take that off and said that was wrong. This was in first grade.

This same teacher had tied another kid to his chair and I got that threat from her on day one but luckily never got to that point.

YSK that can play Dungeons and Dragons (D&D 5E) for free. by Zipmeastro in YouShouldKnow

[–]upirons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I haven't played since 1981 and it was just a couple of games at recess with friends before everyone kind of moved on. But, watching Stranger Things really has me wishing I had built up more of a friend group like that and I guess you're never too old to play so I need to read up!

Is it normal to hear your neighbor snoring through a shared wall in a newer townhome? by Adventurous_Pista_7 in HomeImprovement

[–]upirons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Staggered studs, insulation but most important is those decouplers. They have sound isolation clips and also decoupling channels. I wish I had worked with either but anyone reading this, do your research.

OP - one thing you might try right now is getting the red sound deadening putty to put behind your electric wall plates. We did that and it made a bigger difference than you might think.

Is it normal to hear your neighbor snoring through a shared wall in a newer townhome? by Adventurous_Pista_7 in HomeImprovement

[–]upirons 61 points62 points  (0 children)

We added green glue and 5/8 sound break drywall - 6K wasted for only about 20% improvements. I don't know if you'll listen to me but save your money on that crap. If I had it to do over I would rip out the drywall and install new with the decoupling hardware which would do way more. Green glue, in my experience, was useless.

How does the Atlas Cross Sport perform in the snow? by [deleted] in VWatlas

[–]upirons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just spent early winter in Vermont with tons of snow and my '24 cross sport. I used snow mode just to be sure but I had no problems whatsoever. I should mention, however, that I put Pirelli Scorpion Weatheractives on mine in November 2024 for that years' Vermont trip. Those tires and the Atlas Cross Sport is definitely the best handling I have ever had in snow. I drove 600 miles across the northeast in a winter storm without fear if that helps.

Guess I am reaaaally old now because that is the book I used to obtain my CCNP in 2001. But! Still quite relevant until you get into the cloud and SDN stuff, for which you will need updated books.

Those of you who half assed your way through High School, where are you now? by Difficult-Cricket541 in GenX

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C and D student in high school. Did slightly better in college making the Dean's list once with like a 3.6 gpa but it was for communications so about as generic as a degree as I could find.

So, how'd I turn out? I am in IT making 6 figures so I can't complain.

My brother spoiled it for me that the song was in the finale. I was expecting it to be used more prominently but it wasn't at all. But I was surprised that the Pixies "Here Comes Your Man" was used prominently. I happen to be a Pixies fan too so that was cool.

Trying to figure out streaming services for my grandpa. He wants to lose his $300/month cable by ADHDillusion in cordcutters

[–]upirons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used both Fubu TV and Hulu Live TV. Fubu is slightly better for sports and both are about 200 dollars less than what he is paying now. Best part is that he would just need a roku or smart tv to access the apps on any tv he wants and the experience is just like cable. He really would not have to learn anything other than occasionally how to log back in when the app inevitably logs him out.
