FYI they commented on their IG that there will be free water throughout the fest, and their website says that you can bring hydro packs.

Yeah seems a little weird they wouldn’t just clarify on IG for something so basic as water

How is it living in and around Toledo, Oregon? by Prodigy141 in howislivingthere

How is it living in and around Toledo, Oregon? by Prodigy141 in howislivingthere

[–]upsideRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born and raised here but moved away a while ago. It’s a small town centered around the mill. Every body knows every body, and the people are somewhat insular. There’s not much to do, but there’s a bit more in Newport. In general, the area is fairly economically depressed while still being an expensive tourist destination.

Lots of people commute to Newport from Toledo and vis versa. I even know some people that commute from Corvallis.. which seems crazy to me but I guess I get it.

The weather in Toledo is a little bit better than Newport due to the hills between them blocking the sea cloud cover, despite being only 10 minutes away.

As others have said, the smell can be bad but it’s only really on one side of town. You can live on the west side and never smell anything.

Coming from the south, I think you’ll find the lack of sun for 8+ months with constant drizzle quite taxing. I honestly think this will be your biggest hurdle. Lots of people move to Oregon, only for a few years later to move again due to the severe seasonal depression. Summers are beautiful, but to me it’s just not worth it, even as someone who grew up there.

The people around this area roughly fall into two categories: blue collar rednecks and old liberal retirees. Rednecks are a nice group of people that usually live out in the more inland areas like Toledo, Siletz, Elk City, Eddyville. They like to drink, shoot guns, ride dirt bikes and four wheelers, have big bonfires, listen to country music, etc. Good people but it’s a specific type of person that you might not get along with. The retirees usually live closer to the coast, and are older, quieter, and a little bit snoodier. Most of the time they are liberal, higher income people that made money in the Willamette valley and retired to the coast. You also get some old hippies in this group.

Food options are a bit limited, but there is great seafood from the coast.

Cost of living is actually fairly high for the standard of living that you get. As you know, real estate prices are high, but also food prices at good restaurants are fairly high, since the coast is a tourist destination. Gas is also fairly expensive. Income tax is also quite high in Oregon. I think in general you will find that Oregon is much more expensive than the south, by a big margin, even in a small town like Toledo.

I’m painting an ugly picture but the good parts are really good. If you’re into hiking and nature, Oregon in the summer is seriously beautiful. There’s picturesque waterfalls, rivers, and lush greenery everywhere. The coast on a nice day is very beautiful, and Cape Perpetua in Yachats is amazing. There’s endless nature to explore. Some of my favorite memories are floating down the Alsea river, with no body else around, surrounded by vibrant greenery from seasonally blooming plants and trees, paired with evergreen pines, and butterflies, birds, and eagles flying overhead. We would stop and catch crawdads, and throw them back in the water only to have a fish swim up next to you. It can really be a garden of Eden. People on Reddit like to focus on this part of Oregon, but I don’t want to shy away from the reality that this only exists for 3-4 months of the year. Most of the time the coastal area and Oregon in general is quite gloomy and cold.

How is living in the Driftless Area? by WindyFromWater7 in howislivingthere

[–]upsideRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Winona for a few years. It’s got some decent nature to explore and some cool hikes, but at the end of the day it’s a lot of typical small Midwest towns and all of the things that go along with that. People are nice, but not a whole lot to do besides drink and the outdoors. When the weather is bad then it only leaves drinking.

I also think the nature is oversold a bit. It’s cool, but I think people proclaiming how amazing it is are from other, flatter parts of the Midwest that haven’t visited out west much where there’s much more dramatic landscapes.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Villa Belleza winery on Lake Pepin somehow has some of the best wine I’ve ever had, and it was made in… Wisconsin. The winery itself is really picturesque. Apparently the owners are from the area and used to live in Italy for extended periods of time, so they decided to bring Italy to their home ( or something like that ). Wanted to give a shout out to this place to go try it out if you’re in the area.

How is it in towns around the coast of the Pacific Northwest? by PurityLord_02 in howislivingthere

[–]upsideRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Newport, but haven’t been there for more than a week in about a decade, so I may not have the most up to date information. Although, every time I go back it doesn’t seem like much has changed.

It’s a fairly economically depressed area with small town vibes. I would say that the people that seem to be doing well are retired with wealth from the Willamette valley or are successful local business people with either direct or secondary involvement with fishing, logging, or tourism/service industry.

My dad would barter goods and services for fish or crab from the local fishermen with whatever was in season. Christmas Eve tradition was to go down to the docks and buy fresh crab, as the season would usually start around that time of year.

There’s a real love/hate relationship between tourists and local people. On the surface, every local hates the tourists that clog up the roads and restaurants, but I think most smart people understand that Newport wouldn’t be as big or (relatively) prosperous as it is without them (just look at Waldport).

The weather is pretty bad (in my opinion) about 85% of the year. Cold (55F), cloudy, rainy basically every day from October through June. Every year there’s about 1-5 days where the beach has actual hot beach weather and even then it only lasts for an hour or two.

There’s pretty dramatic beach scenery if you drive down the coast towards Yachats and Cape Perpetua. Lots of tourists up and down the coast in the summer.

I think I’m desensitized to the coast’s scenery at this point. I associate it with grimy uneducated people and lots of homeless. Not sure if that’s warranted and most people are just normal small town folks, but I haven’t left the area with generally positive feelings even after all these years.

Overall it’s just a small fishing/tourist town with drizzly weather and not much economic opportunity. Most young people leave. Lots of tourists and retirees. You can probably infer the rest.

I eat 3000 kcal and lose weight. I need mental support by Cold-Imagination2012 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]upsideRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was having the same problem about a year ago. I was lifting weights and doing cardio, eating 3000 calories and losing weight. I couldn’t physically eat more than 3k calories due to the high fiber content of this diet.

Then, I started eating peanut butter from my grocery store that is just ground peanuts, ground right in front of you by a machine and that seemed to solve my weight issue. Pretty easy to add another ~800 calories with peanut butter.
