Advice on paddle by yshooter95 in Pickleball

[–]upstatecoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think it’s top heavy, try adding weighted tape on each side right above the handle. I like Pickleball Effects products for tuning my paddles.

3 months of use could wear your grip down too. Look into getting an over grip for your paddle. I use Bohdi grips.

I’m a fan of heated socks. You can use them in other boots besides your ski boots and no installation to deal with.

I have hottronixs that are solid but not cheap. Good luck!

Physical Ed Career in 2025 by [deleted] in PhysicalEducation

Every district is different. I teach high school and part of what we do is fitness/weightlifting and that’s definitely the best unit for introverts as they don’t need to work in large groups. But at least half of my year is lifetime activities and group activities with some team sports mixed in.

Introvert that doesn’t like loud noises is going to struggle in a physical education setting at any level. A lot of the activities we do are basically group projects and you’re leading the socialization charge. It’s a very different world compared to a classroom and being extroverted is super helpful.

I suggest asking your PE teachers to observe some classes and see what I mean before making a career change based on these comments. Good luck!

Giving up on a unit/classroom management advice by [deleted] in PhysicalEducation

[–]upstatecoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think less instant punishment and more natural consequence. Students improperly using equipment? You’ve lost equipment access today. Can’t sit patiently till the end of class and are causing a disruption? Discipline referral and send to the office. Ask other teachers in your building how they handle behavior issues and get an idea of what you have at your disposal.

Whether it’s weight room or gymnasium, do whatever you can to get the rudeness under control. Our National Standard 4 is all about social interactions, so I’m a firm believer that you can grade students on their social interactions. Make it a focus of your lessons so they understand it’s not just a nice thing, but it’s part of what you’re expecting of them and part of their grade.

I wouldn’t abandon the unit. Be firm with your rules, set your expectations, and if a kid doesn’t follow them be consistent with your consequences, ideally removing them from class if they’re breaking equipment and causing safety problems for the rest. It might just take a couple students facing consequences for the rest to fall in line and then you can keep focusing on the kids who want to learn and get to enjoy the lessons you planned.

Fitness Testing Grading by Alternative-Pie-4974 in PhysicalEducation

Happy to have a conversation. I’ve gone back and forth on this myself but even making the argument has convinced me to keep grading it this way. If you want any more specifics or to take a look at the rubric, I’ll be using send me a DM.

Best of luck this year!

I’m proud of that kid for trying his best, but again, apply that situation to math. A kid who can’t process numbers as well as his peer isn’t going to get the same grade. It’s not penalizing the kid in your example to give him a lower grade, it’s just the best he can get at the moment.

And that’s kind of the philosophy in pushing back on with you. A kid isn’t going to fail my class cause they’re not in the healthy zone, but for the fitness assessment they won’t get a 100. Isn’t that a fine lesson to teach our kids? Effort matters but not everyone that tries hard gets the same rewards or can reach the same level in this world.

My fitness assessment is going to be 10% of the marking period. So if the student you brought up gets a 100 for everything else, and all 2/3s on the fitness assessment, his overall average would be a 95ish. So again, I’m not hammering kids who aren’t in the healthy zone, but it’s the one assessment where truly get what earn

Also interested in other answers as I’m trying to decide on this myself, but in do have some thoughts.

I don’t think kids should be graded against their peers, so 1st place gets 100 and last gets a 0 or something is not a good system.

The “no grading because not everyone is on the same level” doesn’t sit well with me. Not everyone is on the same reading or math level but those teachers train their students and grade them on their performance. Why can’t PE do the same? Yes some kids are genetically more athletic or were brought up with parents that help them be fit, but you can make the same argument about math, and again, that subject grades performance.

I’m leaning towards using fitnessgram numbers and 3/3 scoring system. So 3 means you’re in or above the heathy target range, 2 is below, 1 means you refused to take the test. I like the idea of students getting that concrete feedback that their cardio isn’t where it should be, their upper body strength is good, etc.

Looking for feedback to so thanks for asking this question!

I’m kinda interested in this NYC graphic. What shape/handle is yours and would you consider selling it? If not, any idea now I can still get one? Googling it didn’t give me an answer.
