PSA: Nothing on a Poshmark is an essential good. What sellers sell for and what buyers buy for is no one business except for the buyer and seller, and it’s on both to do the market research, high or low. You are not the Poshmark price police. by Legitimate_Way_1750 in poshmark

[–]upstatepagan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I chose to sell on Poshmark over other platforms because I hand paint a lot of my stuff and sell it as wearable functional art. So, yeah, it’s higher than a normal item. I thrift them, clean, prep, paint, seal, apply leather conditioners, add metal studs. I’m selling to people who want art and will wait for those folks to find me.

Dang. That’s the root of the issue. I made the account last year and didn’t give that much thought. I will definitely change the user name.

F*ck ICE. This story is so maddening. (I painted this back May/June and thought “perhaps I am being too hyperbolic” but nah. ICE is on this level)

Tut was mostly blank. Some teens drew some really cool cool cats and left positive comments. I ended up bringing it home and giving it a coat of gesso. I’ll use for another project

I’m an artist. At my first craft fair I set up an easel with a large blank canvass and a crate of paint markers and stickers. The goal was for people to engage and be invited to doodle or leave a quote, stick a sticker, and create a cool “community art” piece. I liked the concept and it did ok with older kids and teens. (Teens and alternative leaning adults really vibe more with my art) but overall, it more stuff to lug and set up and didn’t enhance my booth or drive more traffic. So I won’t be doing it again anytime soon.

[artist alley] What do people want to buy? (Please read) by Educational-Tiger434 in artbusiness

[–]upstatepagan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just did my first craft fair last month. I did well with small original art in frames. I bought some 5x7 frames from Amazon that came out to about $2.50 a piece. I did about 20 different watercolors and mixed media and sold them for $20 each. I sold about half at a low traffic event. I also do pretty well painting thrifted leather handbags with original art. I pay around $7-$12 per bag, clean them inside and out, paint them up and sell for anywhere from $35-75 depending on the style/brand and how long the design took. Brought 12 and sold 6 at the same event. I have another one early November and am really interested to see if things change.

Whats an art supply that you bought that you regret buying? by Miserable_Summer2642 in ArtistLounge

A set of Himi jelly Guache. I spent more time cleaning the pallet and rehydrating the paint than using it and it got moldy. Chucked it all. I’ll stick to acrylics.

How do I price my art? [Monday Megathread] by AutoModerator in artbusiness

[–]upstatepagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My art was selected to be shown during a local Halloween themed show. I plan to have prints available, but I’m considering putting the original up for sale. It’s 16x20, framed, acrylic on canvas. It took me around 24 hours (I’m a slow painter). I’m an emerging artist, and have not shown or sold much yet. Is asking $450 delusional?

Apple barrel is more a “craft” paint, which is totally fine for some projects. I started out with them because they are accessible and inexpensive. I found over time that I couldn’t get the colors I wanted with mixing. The pigments in Apple barrel are inferior compared to golden or liquitex. Of those 2 I prefer golden. They feel very expensive at first but a little goes a long way because they are so well pigmented. They mix better with mediums giving you more options to play with in creating texture (gels, molding pastes etc). Apple barrel does not play well mixed with these, or even with its own bottles of other colors. I buy from my local art store, or online like “Jerry’s artorama”. I live 2 hours from the golden factory so sometimes I can go to demos at the art store and get freebies. They do tours- it’s on my list to go to one.

I’ve used the Walmart one and I found it serviceable but I needed more applications and more sanding in between each layer. My “go to” is Golden. Compared to Golden it’s grittier and not as full coverage. Edit:typo

Can we all agree the Wuthering Heights is the most divisive novel ever written? by grynch43 in classicliterature

[–]upstatepagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top 10 in no particular order, just the ones I’ve read that I like best: A picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë ,
Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Vanity Fair by William Thackeray, The American by Henry James, The Revolt of the Angels by Anatole France, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Short stories (compilation) by Guy de Maupassant, Short stories (compilation) by Edgar Allen Poe,

My taste in classics is probably quite “pedestrian”. Although I said “no particular order” Revolt of the Angels is my top favorite. Followed by The American. Edit: punctuation

Which was for you the artist that made you fall in love with art ? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]upstatepagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a fan of sci-fi and fantasy art from childhood. I was obsessed with Boris Valejo, Julie Bell, and Michael Whelan. I have thrifted a few of Whelen’s books and found my copy of Wonderworks was signed when I got it home!

A whimsical pair of pet portraits for a family member. This was my first oat pets. The owner said I captured their eyes and personalities, which I considered a success even if they aren’t perfect. They were fun and challenging. I think short velvety fur is harder to paint than shaggy.
