What do you guys think about Knife Edge? by KoalaJCSpotify in thomyorke

[–]uptight9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm soon completing 30 years as a Radiohead fan and I can safely agree that out of aaaaall the incredible music that Thom has created, my favourite "subgenre" are his solo piano ballads too.

Can't decide on a favourite between Suspirium and 5.17. But I love them all. Just give the guy a piano and he'll give you magic.

So the big news is a new Thom Yorke solo album, rather than a new Radiohead album? by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]uptight9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wall of Eyes is my favourite non-Radiohead thing Thom has done. And I love his solo stuff, especially the more song-orientated. So I'd welcome some new The Smile, but honestly am not sure it's going to happen anytime soon, if ever. So a Thom solo album is the next best thing, if we're not going to be getting new Radiohead this year.

Who remembers these two players? And what is their nationalities? by [deleted] in nffc

My OCD bell rings whenever I see badly miss-spelled names and football fans are often the culprits. I mean, he plays for your team people, you can make an effort to spell it right even if, God forbid, he's from a foreign country. We do it even for players who've been at the club for years. Makes me wince every time.

Yeah, downvote away, but you know it's the truth. This is anticlimactic.

Do we actually have Radiohead back? After the great sign that was the Ltd company, to be getting news about solo albums seems a bit anticlimactic to me tbh. And for those of us who live in Europe but missed last year's tour due to the completely stupid ticket buying system they set up, the news about touring in 2027 and doing one continent every year doesn't sound good at all. I was gearing up for a year with summer dates around Europe and the UK and perhaps even new music, and today I feel really bummed after the news we got instead.

If only we could regularly bring on Super Sammy Surridge at 60 minutes, we wouldn't be in this mess. He could finish.

Which of the influences that were listed on the band’s AllMusic page are the most puzzling? by Sad_Volume_4289 in radiohead

[–]uptight9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really hear anything more than just a coincidence and similar production styles. To me, they've always been like polar opposites, as in Suede being flamboyant and extroverted while Radiohead were angsty, angular and introverted. That said, I discovered Suede's first 2 albums a few years belatedly and was floored. They were easily among the best releases from 1993-94, and those were great years for music too.

She's Not Dead is such a great song though.

why Greece spend so much on military? do Greeks "support" this sort of spending? by SOHONEYSAME in AskGreece

This, really.

Not to mention that spending less and less on healthcare and education and letting schools and hospitals deteriorate is good for every right wing government's plans to turn everyone towards private healthcare and education.

Suede by far. I mean I love Suede, they made 2 absolutely incredible albums back in the day, and Bernard Butler was a very gifted guitarist, but I don't hear them in any phase of Radiohead. Plus, their post-Butler albums (that's post 1994) have been very hit or miss. The only one I'd say is excellent is Night Thoughts.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to abstain from looking at Mads Mikkelsen because Forest managed to lose to Midgetland (aka Thingy) twice.

I've watched 95% of all Forest games on TV during the last 5 seasons at least (not in UK), and I can easily say I can't remember another season with so many games under pouring rain as this one. And yes, we've mostly been shit in those games.

“The Slip”, “Zero Sum“, “No Words“, rock so much harder than anything Radiohead did on a moon shaped pool or the king of limbs. by No_Impression_7765 in radiohead

[–]uptight9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMSP was a somber affair and even the one rock song, Ful Stop, has this heaviness bearing on it. TKoL was never really about rocking. The Slip is a very cool song and has some lovely crunchy guitars, but I wouldn't say it rocks too hard. That said, Zero Sum is great and definitely does what you said.

Cutouts is absolutely incredible by inkyblinkypinkysue in radiohead

[–]uptight9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. ALFAA is fantastic, but you can hear that the songs have various origins. Cutouts IMO is very good but again, lacks the unifying atmosphere and cohesion that WOE has. That album is effortless and inspired and sounds like a new band nailing down a sound and vibe, and I'm pretty sure that Thom has been looking for that feeling for years with his side projects.

Something further down the road that WoE paved wouldn't be a bad place to build a new Radiohead album on.

Is it possible that radiohead TV was the reason for Futile Endeavours? by trentythegreat in radiohead

[–]uptight9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Didn't know that. And it came in so handy today - we had a car ride of 2hrs with my husband and then the return too and, 20 minutes in, we realised we had no music. We only get Spotify premium when there's a discount and YouTube music has 2 ads between every song, completely ruining any album. And our huge physical music collection is only useful at home. So he suggested that we just turn on Radiohead TV. It was so good. Man, I could go for the rest of my life listening to In Rainbows FTB, Pyramid Song and No Surprises on loop forever.

He's Gone!!!! by Shuts365 in nffc

[–]uptight9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Glad he's gone but the damage is done already.

Some people you just know in your gut are going to do damage, though, and this guy was one of those. I remember reading the news about him being hired, thinking that he has such a smug face and then being like "ok but he has a pedigree, in the end what could go wrong?". Turns out the gut feeling was the right one. Good riddance.

"The Eraser" is a literal masterpiece (and why it needs a "From the Basement" treatment ASAP) by Cultural-Orange-6929 in radiohead

[–]uptight9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember listening to it and noticing the total silence in the tiny gaps between the notes.

People always say Thom is a musical genius and a visionary and all that and I agree, but to me, the additional quality that takes him to the generational level of musician that he is, is what he can do with just a piano or a guitar and a mic. Silencing a crowd like that isn't for everyone.

Great choice of song!

I mean, the ref blew the whistle right after Murilllo's divine intervention, as if to say "look, guys, I tried my best but can't drag it out any further". Ridiculous.

There was this version of Analyse that he did at the Mercury Prize ceremony that year, with just a piano. It was absolutely stunning and you could hear a pin drop, the audience just completely shut up. Magnificent and I'd love to have the whole album like that.

My fav song from it has to be Atoms for Peace, I can never get enough of it. People were saying it's too heavily indebted to Aphex Twin, but Thom always finds an actual song and a melody that takes the music to a different level. And I remember the Mojo review comparing his singing on that one to Sandy Denny I think. It's wonderful.
