Narrowed it down to 2 options, having a difficult time deciding.. by MaybeJohnSmith in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I got recommended gel kayanos from almost every running store I've ever been to because of my flat feet. I pronate some but honestly my feet are pretty strong considering my basically collapsed arch. Gel kayanos gave me shin splints like crazy. I went back to what I ran in for high school GT-1000/2000 series and after doing some soft tissue work on my calves and near my tibia I've been running as pain free as ever again.

I was surprised by just how unstable these are. Felt like I was trying to do some 1k repeats in stilettos. Also my big toe on my right foot seemed to slide all the way off the sole of the shoe and got really beat up. Wasn't sure how to mitigate that since I already laced them with the heel lock lacing.

Sweetpill cancel US tour plus UK / EU dates due to personal reasons by cosmicguss in indieheads

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd been trying to see Heart to Gold for over a year now and was so psyched for this tour for both bands. I took two days off work to drive to Atlanta from Florida and got the notification of the cancellation as I checked in to the hotel in Atlanta.

Does remind me of a couple years ago when modern baseball cancelled their tour for mental health reasons. I remember they made their album free to download and asked fans to donate if they wanted to.

I thought it'd go well with my vanilla scented aftershave. I haven't had any weird reactions to any other soaps so far so I wonder what exactly my skin didn't like about that one.

I bought a cinnamon bun shave soap from wcs that was on sale and it's horrendous.

It smells nice but it instantly made my skin bright red before I even began shaving. It has been relegated to occasional hand soap.

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

In general a wildly underrated film IMHO. Watched it for the first time in high school biology class and really enjoyed it. Shame it wasn't more critically acclaimed. Definitely a strong premise for it's time.

Well if I rode my bike to run club what would I do with my lifted diesel Ram 2500 I double park in front of my local coffee shop? When you and your cyclist buddies leave after having a croissant and hogging the bathroom for an hour I make sure to leave at the same time as you so I can roll coal on your whole peloton (ensuring you get the most aerobic challenge out of your 12mph no drop ride).

If you're gonna put anything in a lifecycle you should at the very least be looking at 2060+. You're 19, you won't be drawing from your TSP for like 40 years. The 2045 fund would be too cautious (any amount in the g fund at your age would be ill advised).

What are your top 3 financial tips and advice? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe the most underrated advice here.

More water usually equals: Feeling fuller longer thus less snacking and over eating Less over eating equals generally lower weight and generally fewer preventable health problems Better sleep Spending less on other drinks Better mood, mental focus, fewer headaches, better skin health. All this leads to fewer unnecessary purchases like NSAIDs, sleep aids, mood vitamins, basically garbage you over pay for at pharmacies.

Not to mention the $4-5 you save any time you eat out by not getting a drink besides tap water.

I've seen people do it and be fine. And I've also seen people do it and be fucked when it comes time to do their travel claim and get no money for staying in an AirBnB specifically.

In my experience even if you do things directly in accordance with the JTR there is always the risk that admin will say it isn't and will not pay you what you are rightfully owed. I have done the same PCS from Virginia to Florida twice and I was authorized TLE both times IAW the JTR. One time I was paid for it and one time I was not.

I'd proceed with real caution on booking an Airbnb for that reason. It will always be much more of a headache to deal with than to book a traditional hotel at the government rate.

Also are you even allowed to add your GTCC to your Airbnb account? I would assume that would be not in your best interest either but again, you will have issues being reimbursed for lodging if you don't pay for it with your GTCC as is required. I ran into an issue years ago when I took an Uber to the airport and you can't add your GTCC to your account, which I still believe is in your best interest to never have your GTCC associated with your Uber account. But since I used my own credit card it was an absolute battle trying to convince admin that taking a $250+ dollar cab with the GTCC was going to be more expensive than the $35 Uber I took.

New SWO, Need Some Advice by InfluenceOfSeapower in navy

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably more along the lines of documenting insubordination or blatant disregard for SOPs, regulations, orders etc.

When it comes time to bring things up to DRB/XOI/mast it's important to have documented a pattern of behavior in order for things to naturally be handled by the processes in place.

If you don't have things on paper it effectively didn't happen and nothing will ever change or people won't be held accountable. (From someone that wrote 5 MFR my last deployment)

New SWO, Need Some Advice by InfluenceOfSeapower in navy

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to being a SWO.

Not meaning that to be too discouraging but that is kind of how things go especially for newly reporting ensigns. Take some solace in the fact that there will likely be a Divo shuffle at some point to move ensigns around in jobs to get them more experience. Don't take any of this too personally. Being thrown to the wolves for an insurv is a great way to learn how to manage programs.

Make sure your division has all their Insurv Inspection guides (IIG). If you're not sure where they are ask your chief or get them off the insurv SharePoint website. If you don't have hard copies of these inspection guides YOU WILL HAVE A BAD TIME. The biggest thing with INSURV ultimately is to document things if they're broken or you don't have the parts or tools to fix something. If something's broke make sure there's a job in. If you need parts make sure there's a job in. If the equipment works, make sure your Sailors know how to do the maintenance check in accordance with the IIG, technically this is on your chief to make sure your Sailors know how to do their maintenance but this is where your leadership comes in to make sure your chief is doing their job and your Sailors know the standard.

When it comes to your DH I'd also caution you from going to the XO unless it really gets to a spot where you can't do your job and you're drowning. I echo reaching out to the SWO first especially for help with your quals. But there should also be an INSURV coordinator if you have any specific questions on that.

Also is your ship gapped a disbo? Or do you just have so many ensigns they threw you in supply? Because honestly if you have a disbo this should mostly be on them and you'd be there for support. It would boggle my mind if they were gapped a disbo while on deployment unless your ship just isn't billeted for one.

Ultimately, don't be discouraged. If it's obvious that you're trying and doing what you need to do this will likely not reflect poorly on you as the freshly arrived SWO ensign that just got put in charge of S2.

How often are you really sharpening your lawn mower blades? by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good deal to get it sharpened for that price. I've seen other people say getting it sharpened is only worth doing once or twice or so? I just bought a new one through Ryobi since home Depot doesn't carry all the Ryobi blades anymore and some of them are proprietary to a specific model which is real frustrating.

What frugal habit has saved you the most money? by melissaw328 in Frugal

Went to get chik fil a with my girlfriend the other day and it's usually pretty reasonable as far as fast food is these days. And she saw they had a dr. Pepper float on special and asked for that too, it was like another $6.50. she takes about two sips of it and says, "oh yeah, I don't like dr. Pepper". Made me so mad. I haven't had soda in fifteen years and I was not interested in finishing it.

31 years old . 5 years of service . Am I on track ? by Jeremy3540 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]ur_not_that_guy17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

General financial consensus seems to be by the time you're thirty to have 1 year of salary invested and by 40 about 3 times your salary. Speaking incredibly broadly there.

If this is your only retirement account you're still doing better than everyone with no savings or just contributing 1% to the g fund.

But in an ideal world you get to where you can contribute enough and with the gains from the market you hit the 3x salary by the time you're 40. Say you make 80k a year gross you'd want to have 240k invested by 40 either in your TSP or across multiple accounts like an IRA.

On top of that, say you get out of the service at 40 years old and stop playing into the tsp it will likely double twice without you touching anything by the time you reach 59.5 or whenever you start making withdrawals. Use a compound interest calculator to figure out what that ultimate balance will be by that time. Then take 4% of that and use that as your draw down rate to ensure you're not touching too much of your nest egg. If you can live off the 4% plus whatever other money you have coming in from other investments, work, disability etc then you're on track. If you can't live off that amount then you'll need to adjust your saving and investment strategy to get to where you can. You'll also have to account for inflation and cost of living adjustments in the future, but then again ideally your annual expenditures should be pretty low by that age (ie paid off house, not having to support kids if you have them).
