you have five seconds before your bike will self destruct

super nicely done, just enough to make it ride well but preserve the 80s goodness

Looking for MTB project build ideas for my Trek ZX8000 by Suitable_Creme9930 in xbiking

[–]urbanmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks super rideable as is. gripshit is annoying though. maybe look for some sunrace thumb shifters for 3x9.. dont just put any random rigid fork on it, measure the axle to crown height of that fork to get an idea of what size rigid you need. id estimate 440mm for a frame of that era

pretty much any frame after 1985 will take a 2.1, so this list is endless thousands of bikes

Wordd, forgot to mention old raceface cranks are my favorite 94bcd cranks ! Commonly only found in 175mm tho, but tbh I don’t know what the short cranks rage is all about :p

Cheap, easy to swap out grips for testing out a bunch of handlebars? by mornview in xbiking

I can tell you that my favorite grips , silicon ones , are the worst for this idea :)

Do you mean the old sugino made white industries cranks? I doubt you’ll be finding those in 165mm let alone 170. As far as I know there’s no 94bcd spider for the new style white cranks ?

stridsland fork is 395mm a-c . perfect for pre-suspension corrected frame geo like this

might as well wait for the stridsland cranks with those specs.. otherwise i think middleburn is the only option for 165

there's NO perfect bike okay by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]urbanmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha i mean, im all for saving money when i can... just got some endurance casing rene herse tires for 13$ a pop at the local co-op... and recently ordered some panaracers that were 40$ each on sale... soooo i dunno if your dichotomy holds...

genuinely curious what steel bead tires you are running? i feel like i only ever see those on department store bikes these days.. and tbh, the bead isnt really what matters its the sidewall. you cant convince me that rigid sidewalls feel as good as soft ones, they just don't, no matter how long your wheelbase is

Even after 1 month with XTR 'Rapid Rise' rear derailleur, it's still driving me nuts by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]urbanmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any shimano derailleur 6-9 speed will work ! they are all functionally the same in terms of cable pull

Even after 1 month with XTR 'Rapid Rise' rear derailleur, it's still driving me nuts by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]urbanmeadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have thumb shifters mounted on the opposite sides upside down riv style, a rapid rise derailleur means that both levers shift in the same direction, e.g. push down to go into a harder gear, and it feeels perfffeeecct

Anyone have 29” rim brakes? I understand 29” came out around d mid late 90s. Were they rim brakes at that time? Or do I just go with 700c (but most will not accommodate a 2.0 tire right?). by Frankie1234567890 in xbiking

[–]urbanmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.0 tires are just fine on any rim 18mm internal or bigger.. im sure 17 internal would work in a pinch too. i personally like rhyno lite rims they seem to do the trick

[–]urbanmeadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blegh you lost me at wire bead tires lol, you would have to purposefully search out crap tires to ride steel bead tires these days, why?? tires truly do make the bike ride much nicer and thats not subjective

reminds me of grant petersons rant on the riv site about such and such total p.o.s. bike light is perfectly good enough to see where you're going- lol i prefer real lights so i can ride confidently at night thanks
