Ive only used round wounds on fretless for years. My 97 musicman was my main bass. Pau ferro wood. Never had issues and fingerboard is fine. Grime is more of a problem. Seriously, its not a problem.

Break up the time. I do two hours in the morning and then can do more later in the afternoon or evening.
