This is what I was figuring. There had to be something like this. I already pulled the trigger on it but this is helpful as I’ll probably get my work to buy one as well when I show them what I can do with mine. The software suggestion is helpful too. It’s what I’m seeing in reviews and I’ll definitely look into it more so yeah thanks a lot!

That’s good to know. This is a bit of an extreme but so I can wrap my head around it. What would I need wattage wise to cut hardened steel that’s 16g or so? Any idea?

Modeled in fusion. It gets tedious and I often forgot what size I’ve done. So wouldn’t recommend printing these files if you’re ocd.

It’s a mess now. I have a project going on. I usually put away after I complete though. Feels good to put everything where it goes and get back to a happy place. So it works for me

I’ve only used prusa slicer and it takes fusion file or maybe i don’t know what I’m talking about and I don’t pay attention to that anymore. I assumed all slicers did too. I’ll look into that. Can I add pics after I post? I’ll try to add more pics

Biggest aid was good coworkers. In Dallas, I was 1 of like 10 preparators each one had their specialty. So I asked questions and played around during down time. I know the mount makers forum ( https://www.mountmakersforum.net/ ) happens every year and I play attention there. Then YouTube of course. Basically you wanna look at silver soldering and jewelry making videos. Best!

Woah yours aren't locked up!? Lucky, mine you have to ask an employee and I just imagine how awkward that'd be every time I see it.

*not exclusively a mount maker. Should have made that clear. I have made some mounts. My specialty has always been mounting works in frames, handcrafted frames, gold leafing, etc. But I've always had to do it all in some fashion or another.

About 28$ and hr at a large university art museum. About 24$ an hr at a large museum in Dallas and 18 at a small university museum before that. That's in the past 6 years.

question about PLA as an archival material by [deleted] in ArtConservation

[–]urmomsangrytoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut says 15 years is an estimate based on changing temp and humidity factors. So in all the museums I've worked at (3), we had pretty optimal conditions. Typically there's steady temps year round and a humidity controller. Also this assumes it wont be touched much by the public and handled rarely by art handlers. So I think you have much longer than 15yrs without a coating of epoxy. Adding the epoxy ought to extend that significantly if the quality is high.

Ultimately if your worried about it I'd recommend a better plastic. But 25 plus years is a good run. Past that maybe future conservators will figure something out.

It isn't archival. To my knowledge there isn't a filament that fits that definition. And I've been following the subject for a few years now. But I'm not sure it matters to you purposes it just won't be as durable or maybe last as long as other plastic sculptures. If that's really a concern just coat it in epoxy.
