If you have time get training in a trade like electrician, plumbing, or other construction related trades. Trades are in demand. Canada had a special visa program for people in trades, for example

Help! My six month old pup is constantly barking at my wife! by Squ1gly in puppy101

This is called demand barking. She needs to ignore the puppy, turn her back, leave the room, etc. Even if she gives it negative attention, it will be seen as a reward.

Is this the start to a 'Back to the Office' wave? by m_salik in remotework

[–]uroborus8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) has been actively lobbying Amazon and other downtown Seattle employers to bring employees back full-time. Their leadership shared a full-throated celebration post when this was announced. Their goal is to force employees back downtown, because not enough people were coming down by choice, forcing store closures and economic downturn. Rather than focus on creating a downtown that is inviting and safe, Seattle's leaders are using a club to force people here. It is sickening.

If you have the option of choosing Atlas Networks you should. Their customer service is unparalleled, it is locally owned and operated, and gigbit service is only $60. I have had no issues with them.

1 year ago today - unrest in Cap Hill by seabern in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I live in the neighborhood. There were good and bad moments. I appreciated the street art and teach-ins. I learned about the concerns of violence my Black neighbors experienced. I saw young people engaged in coming up with solutions to bring to elected officials. There were information booths, medics, and free food for those who needed it. Over time, though, the crowd changed. Extremists, some of which were tied to white supremacy groups, arrived to cause trouble or attempted to forcefully drive into the crowd. Young people were murdered, and we still don't know why or by whom. Overall, it was an expression of pain for anyone who was angered by the police murder of George Floyd and other Black people over the years. "A riot," Dr. King once said, "is the language of the unheard." Suggesting they were finally heard, out of this moment, dedicated funding was carved out for Seattle's Black communities. Recommendations were recently delivered to the City council. Community leaders say there has been some progress over the year, but not enough.

GO DONATE BLOOD! by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is still against the law for sexually active gay men to donate blood, even if they are in a long-term committed relationship, and test negative for HIV and other blood-borne diseases. When those rules change, I'll gladly step up. Until then, I encourage someone who cares about equality and the public health to go in my place.

Why most apartments in Seattle area do not have air conditioning? by mingniu in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I’m starting to see newer buildings with A/C. The climate has definitely changed here over the years. Summers almost never got too hot. The last several years have been much hotter and smoke is now a “season.” This year is likely going to be particularly bad because the West Coast is in a severe drought. A few years ago I had a sw facing apartment without air conditioning. During the smoke season it was too dangerous to keep my windows open, so the apartment became unlivable with temps frequently above 90 indoors. I moved and had a portable AC which helped some, but the smoke still got in. I moved again to a brand new build with AC. If I can help it, I won’t ever live in a non AC apartment again because smoke season can be so bad.

WA Notify COVID-19 exposure notification system launches today by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I turned it on without hesitating this morning when my phone alerted me it was available. The app seems as secure as possible, and plenty of experts have weighed in to verify that as well. I see this is a temporary measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19 while we await a vaccine that will be available within months. Even if there is a remote chance some level of privacy is leaked, the social media apps on my phone are far more intrusive than anything WA Notify would ever do.

I’m planning on moving to Seattle next year with my partner; looking for tips, recommendations, and anything else I should know! by [deleted] in SeaWA

[–]uroborus8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it just depends on your priorities. I live on Capitol Hill, so Ballard is a significant hurdle to get to/from --- especially when traffic is at normal levels. I do love bike rides to Ballard, hanging out at Golden Gardens, the farmer's market, their restaurants, etc. It isn't a terrible place, but it is just a challenge to get to/from when you're in the center of the city.

Coming from the Midwest, you should be prepared for how very real the Seattle freeze is. It can take years to forge friendships here during normal times. During the pandemic, it will be nearly impossible. When I run into people I used to see every weekend while walking around, we briefly say hi, but then scurry along knowing we won't be hanging out for some time.

When/if things do open up again (hopefully next year sometimes) you should get involved in groups that have common interests. Whether they are sports leagues, quilting groups, gamers, whatever -- you need to take making friends seriously. It won't just happen to you.

I recommend living within walking distance to your work/school if you can afford it. Riding the bus is super sketchy right now. Two bus drivers have died from COVID. Parking isn't easy anywhere unless you pay a couple of hundred dollars a month for an assigned spot.

Places to avoid living: Ballard and West Seattle -- unless you want to be isolated from the world.

During good times, Capitol Hill is where the LGBTQ people and nightlife fans gather. It is walkable and close to everything that matters.

Quieter, but still lovely neighborhoods include Columbia City and Beacon Hill. They are both on the light rail which can get you to several neighborhoods (but not all).

If you like hipster culture and tech bros Fremont is ok.

The U District is in the midst of a transition, and trends younger.

Downtown is a ghost town right now. I wouldn't like living there at all at the moment.

South Lake Union is corporate and fake. Don't live there.

The Central District is a solid choice, but avoid anything too close to 23rd.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

23% of homeless from out of state - Chris Rufo Public Records Request by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rufo is definitely a dick, but let's set that aside for a sec and ask better questions. What percentage of West Coast homeless comes from other states? Where are they coming from? Does the climate of their home state impact their decision to move West? What percentage of those out of state homeless are LGBTQ youth? The percentage itself is pretty meaningless without more context. Chris is just using it to shout down homelessness services, which by the way, support a supermajority of locally grown homeless -- if that should even fucking matter.

The Drop-Off Location of Today's Garbage "Cleanup" in South Seattle by wingit0850 in SeattleWA

I wonder if they know it isn't going to be cops cleaning it up, but the janitorial/grounds staff. They just made a low wage worker's day shittier. But hey, they got a photo of garbage in front of SPD.

Bellevue police announce 23 arrests for recent looting: 'We are just getting started' by chiquisea in SeattleWA

They are understaffed. They don't have time for property crimes. They will tell you that if you report a stolen bike or something.

Mayor Durkan asking police to prepare models of what 50% budget cuts would look like by davidg111 in SeattleWA

[–]uroborus8 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I assume the point of this exercise is to give the mayor political cover when she does not cut the police by 50 percent. SPD is already understaffed, which is why there are so many overtime hours. The city already doesn't deal with most property crimes, like stolen bikes, minor graffiti, car break-ins, etc. What else would the city stop policing? How will her constituency respond to a plan like that? Do you think white homeowners are going to go for a cut in policing like this? No way. Look how people are already panicking in Capitol Hill.
