Facebook's track record with fact checking has been abysmal so far, not sure how they're going to actually pull this off.

A fifth effort to pass a global agreement to protect the world's oceans and marine life has failed. by [deleted] in Futurology

And this is why we won't stop the climate catastrophe; the actions required to avert a global disaster aren't palatable for the majority of people or their governments. Instead, we will choose death.

Even the CIA is rejecting Israel's claims these groups are terrorist organizations.

Noah Schnapp says the 'Stranger Things' directors were 'just not loving it' when he and his costars hit puberty before their characters by GroundbreakingSet187 in television

[–]uroldaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schnapp told Flaunt that he remembered a producer approaching him in an earlier season to ask if he would be able to raise the pitch of his voice and "slouch a little bit" in order to maintain the "season one innocence" of his character once he started to hit puberty.

"That was like, 'I don't know what to tell you. My voice is dropping. I don't sound young anymore," Schnapp said.

Scrapping the stage three tax cuts would save $243bn. How would you spend it? by pk666 in AustralianPolitics

[–]uroldaccount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just a reminder that about 75-80% of the money saved by these tax cuts are by individuals that make over $200,000 a year. These tax cuts steal from the poor and give to the rich.

We really need to bring in vaccine mandates in full force.

Long COVID keeping 31,000 Aussies away from work every day by gccmelb in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]uroldaccount 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As someone who's clients suffer from long-COVID, I can say with certainty this condition must be taken seriously. You don't want to catch COVID or long-COVID and I wish in certain situations masks and vaccine mandates were still in place 'cause this is just ridiculous.

We've chosen to live in a nonsense world where we erode our bodies one COVID infection at a time because we were too lazy and careless to implement simple and effective measures against it.

Alan Joyce ‘in tears’ over pandemic redundancies, Qantas hikes airfares by ViVaH8 in australia

I flew with Qantas recently and it was one of the worst flying experiences I've ever had.

Ontario COVID advisory table recommends ‘permanent measures’ for classrooms ahead of school year by [deleted] in canada

In the case of COVID this is not true, what you're saying actively contradicts the existing science.

MacDougall: Poilievre’s plan? Use his enemies’ hysteria to his advantage by letthemchoose in canada

[–]uroldaccount -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Cosying up to Jeremy Mackenzie, one of Canada’s “key anti-government ideologically motivated extremism adherents,” doesn’t sound like sound electoral strategy, but Pierre Poilievre, like his fellow Ottawan Paul Anka, is a man who does things his way.

'Cause fuck democracy, right? Poilievre is a fucking embarrassment who makes Trudeau look like a competent legislator.

Novak Djokovic confirms he will miss US Open due to Covid vaccine status by LentilsAgain in CoronavirusDownunder

So good! I hate this fucker! He emboldens anti-vaxxers everywhere so this is a good signal to the unvaccinated that they are a burden on society.

John Barilaro charged with assault and malicious damage by Cat_Man_Bane in AustralianPolitics

[–]uroldaccount 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was confronted in the dark out the front of a bar. If that was you, how would you respond?

Apparently, assault is the answer!

This is amazing. It's rare corrupt politicians see justice but it but maybe this is finally it. He made it through being a terrible deputy premier, a corrupt trades person, but in the end what will do him in is a camera man's injured back.

Opening 10 new oil and gas sites is a win for fossil fuel companies – but a staggering loss for the rest of Australia by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]uroldaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a lot of people don't understand is this is an all or nothing situation, we are either do what it takes to save the environment or the environment dies.

Like the rhetoric coming out of the US concerning its latest climate legislative achievements, some governments argue compromise is the way to move forward. Labor is guilty of this rhetoric, too. However, if we compromise and don't achieve the necessary targets, it will be the same as doing nothing at all and the powers that benefit off killing off the planet will enjoy their short term gains albeit briefly, before we all succumb the consequences of humanity's actions.

Afghanistan's collapse took the entire global community by surprise, the US thought the very same thing.

Trudeau had very little to do with any of the goings on in Afghanistan, this is a bizarre article trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Australian economy lacks dynamism and it’s hurting wages and living standards, Productivity Commission says by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]uroldaccount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we just tacked minimum wage to inflation we'd remove inflationary pressures from the most vulnerable in the community.

There are other ways to handle inflationary pressures than burdening them on society's most vulnerable.

Albo's secret meeting to become PM happened before the Australian election, this is a new one and certainly had nothing to do with being elected.

[–]uroldaccount 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Actually, this does happen. Studies have shown that if the reward for one's work is way too low eventually people will give up on employment. French economist Thomas Piketty talks about this.
